Designing Compilers & Programming Languages: Weekly Sessions
**Description:**
Are you fascinated by how programming languages work under the hood? Join our weekly meetup where we explore compilers, programming language design, and the diverse ecosystems that bring code to life!
We've evolved from our OCaml roots into a vibrant community that examines programming languages from every angle. Whether you're curious about type systems, debating functional vs object-oriented paradigms, or diving into implementation details like Haskell's tuples, you'll find engaging discussions here.
***
**🔍 What we explore:**
• **Compiler construction phases** \- lexical analysis\, parsing\, type checking\, optimization\, and code generation
• **Compilation targets & environments** \- virtual machines\, WebAssembly\, and LLVM
• **Programming language features** \- type systems\, design trade\-offs across languages from OCaml to Rust to Haskell and beyond
***
**👥 Who we are:**
Our community includes:
• Beginners taking their first steps into compiler construction
• Experienced developers working on language implementations
• Everyone in between!
**We provide guidance and mentorship for those starting from scratch**, while also tackling advanced topics for seasoned practitioners.
***
**💡 What happens in our sessions:**
• Share compiler projects and implementation challenges
• Debate language design decisions
• Collaborate on solving interesting problems
• Compare strategies (like garbage collection approaches)
• Build toy language parsers together
***
**🎯 Who should join:**
• Compiler construction enthusiasts
• Programming language designers
• Type theory aficionados
• VM implementers
• OCaml, Haskell, Rust (or any language) enthusiasts
• Anyone curious about what happens when you hit "compile"
***
**📋 What to bring:**
• Your curiosity about programming languages
• A laptop if you want to code along
• Any questions or projects you'd like to discuss
**No prior compiler experience necessary** – just bring your enthusiasm for understanding how programming languages come to life!

The Perfect Chaos: Going beyond Eye Candies
"I take complex pictures because the world I experience is complicated and ultimately inexplicable place." **Alex Webb**
Hello all. This time as part of an advanced level and challenging theme we would follow celebrated street photographer Alex Webb’s technique while trying with our eye/cameras to explore complex compositions and go beyond eye candies.
We would practice against the photography clichés of “Less is More” and “Keep It Simple Stupid” by “Look for More” and “Fill the Frame”, by composing some visually complex photographs which contain more than one element, have more than one point of focus, by pushing the frame to include more and more, but falling short of chaos.
“Eye Candy” is a photo that looks cool and clean and has exactly one layer of interest. They look great for about half a second and then there is no reason for your eye to linger any longer. In this outing we would try to take pictures that make the eye to move around and see multiple layers/subjects and action.
Have a look at some of the pictures in this event page's album below on the theme. Also do some research on the technique of “Layering” and using “Multiple Subjects” in photography compositions.
Here are some useful youtube videos on the subject to get you started:

We will meet at **Sham Shui Po MTR station Exit C2** (street level) at **3pm** and then walk around in groups of two to three photographers, then re-group at (venue yet to be decided but would be announced before the outing begins) **5pm** onwards for photo sharing over a drink.
Please post **YOUR BEST FIVE i**mages only for this outing on the meetup site.
For every image you post, please try to comment on at least one other image, no matter if you think you are qualified to comment or not. You can always give some constructive comments with regard to Colour, Tone, Light, Action, Pattern, Balance, Composition, Visual and Emotional appeal of the image/s. This really helps in sharing and learning from each other.

Queer Book Club #32 – ‘The Safekeep’ by Yael van der Wouden
Join us for dinner and discussion about queer books! For our next book, we will be reading **‘The Safekeep’** by **Yael van der Wouden**.
**Blurb**
An exhilarating, twisted tale of desire, suspicion, and obsession between two women staying in the same house in the Dutch countryside during the summer of 1961—a powerful exploration of the legacy of WWII and the darker parts of our collective past.
A house is a precious thing...
It is 1961 and the rural Dutch province of Overijssel is quiet. Bomb craters have been filled, buildings reconstructed, and the war is truly over. Living alone in her late mother’s country home, Isabel knows her life is as it should be—led by routine and discipline. But all is upended when her brother Louis brings his graceless new girlfriend Eva, leaving her at Isabel’s doorstep as a guest, to stay for the season.
**The Plan**

Reston Happy Hour: Scaling Cloud Infrastructure for Heavy Workloads
Gaming, AdTech, EdTech, Media Streaming, and FinTech are just a few of the workloads where high-availability cloud infrastructure matters. Whether you’re doing battle daily in one of these spaces or are just curious about ways to improve performance, meet us in Reston for an in-person discussion on bare metal cloud architecture. You’ll meet our product lead, James MacKenzie, who will walk through how modern bare metal serves as a control plane for hybrid and private cloud architectures.

* Ways to leverage bare metal, containers, and orchestration for better performance and predictable economics;
* Real-world hybrid, disaster recovery, and data-intensive architectures;
* Our approach to eliminating ingress and egress fees.
**Who should attend**
* Cloud architects and platform engineers;
* DevOps professionals and infrastructure leads;
* FinOps stakeholders managing data-heavy or hybrid workloads.
**Why attend**

Build a Large Language Model from Scratch
Join us for another session of our study group as we dive into the fascinating world of Large Language Models (LLMs) using the book **Build a Large Language Model from Scratch** from Manning. In this session, we will finish **Chapter 7: Fine-tuning to follow instructions**. In the last session, we talked about how to prepare the dataset for instruction fine-tuning and in this session we will perform the fine-tuning and evaluate the model afterwards.
This isn't just a lecture! Come ready to ask questions, share insights, and code along. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this is the perfect opportunity to build a strong foundation together. If you plan to work with the code on your own laptop during the session, try and set-up the environment ahead of time (https://github.com/rasbt/LLMs-from-scratch/tree/main/setup).
We will be meeting at the North County Governmental Center this time that is across from the Reston public library.
