Couriers, Saboteurs & Spies - Talk with Dr Helen Fry
Sohemian Society presents Dr Helen Fry author of twenty books on intelligence, MI9 and social history of WWII. She will be talking to Ross McFarlane about her new book **The White Lady**
I know many of you who follow me and have been on my walks are fascinated by the women spies of WWII as I am and so I have my ticket (£11 includes booking fee) already and if you would like to join me above the Groom & Horses we can enjoy a lovely evening in Fitzrovia.
Get your tickets here:
https://www.sohemiansociety.com/opening-page
This is what they say about the author:
**“It is not often that a writer is able to add to history rather than interpret it, but in her exploration of Belgian and Luxembourg archives Fry has done just that.” (Alan Judd, *The Spectator*)**
Intelligence-gathering was essential to both sides in the First and Second World Wars. At the heart of MI6's efforts were two key networks in Belgium. Agents in the White Lady acted as couriers, saboteurs, and spies to facilitate the end of German control. And, when war broke out again two decades later, the leaders of the network regrouped and established a successor: the Clarence Service.
Helen Fry charts the history of these pivotal intelligence networks for the first time. Drawing on recently declassified information, Fry examines who the agents were, how they were recruited, and how the intelligence they gathered directly impacted the outcome of both wars. Operators in the field sent over eight hundred radio messages to London and delivered more than a thousand reports, including groundbreaking information on Hitler's secret weapon the V-1. This is a compelling account of the agents who risked their lives and found ingenious ways to smuggle intelligence out of occupied Belgium.
Historian and biographer **Helen Fry** is the author of *The Walls Have Ears*, *Spymaster*, *MI9*, and more than twenty books on intelligence, prisoners of war, and the social history of World War II. She appears regularly in media interviews and podcasts and has been involved in numerous documentaries.
**Ross MacFarlane** is an archivist who has over twenty years’ experience working on the history of science and medicine. He has researched, lectured, and written on a range of topics, such as aspects of the occult, the history of early recorded sound, and the collection of amulets and charms in Edwardian London. He is a regular book reviewer for *Fortean Times* and has also published in magazines and journals such as *New Scientist*, *The Lancet*, *Folklore*, as well as *Notes and Records of the Royal Society*.

Here's what some of our other students have to say about our classes:
Dean "I started Bushin a few months ago. Having done martial arts for 5 years in another art, I was open to new ideas of what may come with this one. I am thrilled to say it has been fantastic. My instructor Stephen is a legend, he knows what he's talking about and has a no bs way of getting to a point. He is a lover of martial arts and it shows.
His enthusiasm rubs off onto myself and the other students which creates a great learning environment.
This art is marvellous, the group is a humble yet enthusiastic class of students coming to learn. I felt like I was part of the group the moment I joined. Higher belted student don't have an ego and are happy to help and train along side anyone in the class. Joining Bushin has been a tremendous experience."
Konrad "Great place to learn self-defence . Coach with a passion to MMA show you how to react and defend yourself"
Penny "I was completely new to martial arts so I didn't really know what I wanted to learn but I love the way they teach a mixture of martial arts and have a set syllabus. I felt like I was learning boxing, Kickboxing, jujitsu and self defence all in the same class which was great value for money!"
Elizabeth "Great class for beginners and those with experience. Stephen is so welcoming and has been great at helping me find equipment and modify exercises to help with my mobility issues! Really recommend for anyone wanting to try martial arts or get fit in a friendly atmosphere :)"
Lucia "I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it"

Shad Thames and Southwark Park, 3.5 miles
We will meet outside the Tower Hill tube station, to your right as you exit. Please arrive at 11:50 for registration and for 12:00 prompt departure.
* We will then make our way to pass by the Tower of London, which was built in 1080s and enlarged by successive monarchs. It has served as a royal palace, a fortress and a prison.
* Next we will cross the Tower Hill Bridge (completed in 1894) to reach the Shad Thames. This area was once known as the Larder of London, where spices, tea and coffee were imported. The surviving iron wrought-bridges are a reminder of a frenetic industrial scene of loading, hauling and moving goods.
* We will join the riverfront via street called Maggie Blake's Cause. It's named after a local activist who in 1990s campaigned to save the riverfront views as a public right of way.
* We will carry on to see the Salter family statues. Dr Alfred Salter opened a medical practice to help working-class residents, offering free services to people who couldn't afford them. In 1900 he married Ada, and they strived to improve the lives of Bermondsey residents.
* We will then carry on to Southwark Park to see the Albin Memorial and Ada Salter Gardens. We will then carry on via Shad Thames to arrive at London Bridge Station where the walk ends.
Optional lunch/drinks at the end of the walk.
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash or card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
**'No Show' Policy:** *If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organiser on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.*
FREE GUIDED TOUR: Italian Painters (Part II: Cinquecento) + Social
Gentle people,
It is my pleasure to invite you to Part II of Italian artists of the National Gallery, and an inebriated evening of socialisation at a nearby bar afterwards.

The tour will last around 60 minutes. **And here is the agenda:**
* 2pm: (optional) meet at the café inside the National Gallery (Bar Giorgio -- it's right across the Sainsbury Wing entrance) for coffee and croissant and friendly chat
* 2:45pm: Meet in the foyer of the National Gallery (Sainsbury Wing Entrance). We will wait for 15 minutes.
* 3pm: The tour starts right on the dot.

Blue Badge Guides know London better than anyone. They have trained intensively for two years and passed the highest Tourist Guiding qualification in the UK.
**About the walk**
Come and explore this little known corner of London which was once the city’s Italian quarter. Italian organ grinders and ice cream sellers contributed to the area’s street life while skilled mosaic and figurine makers helped to decorate beautiful St. Peter’s church.
The tour will also feature a 12th century church, a road which was once part of Cambridgeshire, a courtyard with bloody connections and the streets which were settings for Dicken’s “Oliver Twist”.
The walk is a private walk for the group, we will be guided by Blue Badge guides [Diane Burstein](https://www.guidelondon.org.uk/guides/dianeburstein/) and [Rachel Kolsky](https://www.itg.org.uk/register-of-guides/rachel-kolsky).
R will be starting at 2:15pm and Diane at 2:30pm, so on the day, just come along at your chosen time.

Energizing Walk for Busy People!
Join our weekly walking meetup to have fun, maintain a healthy lifestyle, meet new people, and enjoy the weather! We meet Saturdays at 10am, halfway between the Reston *Container Store* and *Not Your Average Joes* (by the metal benches), leaving no later than 10:05.
Every week, rain or shine, we start by walking along the Green Trail to reach Lake Anne Community Center. Once there, we pause for water/bio (often staying a few minutes extra from April-November, due to the local Farmer's Market), and then we circle Lake Anne and head back to our starting point. It's roughly 3-4 miles and takes about an hour and a half.
Afterwards, some members will often head to *Not Your Average Joes* or another local restaurant for a quick drink/meal before tackling the day.
This event is open to all ages and fitness levels. Dogs are welcome, and we recommend dressing for the weather (umbrella, water, snow shoes, hat, etc.) since we'll walk rain or shine. Also, feel free to bring a friend!
By signing up, you accept and assume all risks and responsibilities with this activity, and nobody will be held liable.
