An Evening with Live Music: Metropolis (1927)
An Evening with Live Music: Metropolis (1927)
**Tickets to this event have sold out.** *With live music by the Rotterdam Kinematic Ensemble (NL) and the Ensemble Batida (CH).* In the 21st-century, *Metropolis* is a gigantic city sharply divided between the thinkers (wealthy industrialists and the finance elite), who live in opulent towers above ground, and the working class, who toil endlessly in the dangerous factories far below. The story follows Freder (Gustav Fröhlich), the son of the city's master Joh Fredersen, who falls in love with Maria (Brigitte Helm), a charismatic worker and prophet who preaches hope and peace between the classes. When Freder’s father (Alfred Abel) tries to crush the workers' rebellion using a malevolent, robotic double of Maria, the clash between humanity and technology threatens to destroy the entire city. This silent masterpiece explores timeless themes of class conflict, industrial exploitation, and the dehumanization of workers by technology. An apèro will be held after the function. Directed by Fritz Lang *(Woman in the Moon, Die Nibelungen)*. COLD WATER PLUNGE
COLD WATER PLUNGE
Welcome cold lovers! We have been practising cold water plunges for over 4 years. We believe in the benefits of cold water exposure. The feeling you get after the swim is magnificent, it makes you feel alive. We have started this group to safely experience the cold water together. We motivate each other, do active warmup exercises, and also share our life stories with a warm coffee/tea afterwards. The event is every Sunday at 11:30, we meet at the Mythenquai Badi entrance no matter the weather. Take along: a large towel, comfortable bathing suit, flip-flops, and warm clothes (hat, gloves, etc). If you’re planning swimming out take along a bright swim buoy. The event is Free. IMPORTANT: Every participant takes responsibility for themselves when attending this event. Before attempting cold water exposure, individuals with health conditions (e.g., heart problems or hypertension) should seek advice from a healthcare professional. Safely acclimating the body to cold temperatures requires preparation and gradual exposure.

walk from Regendorf to Zürich ending with a Mozart's concert (free)
**Walk description:** The hike starts at Regensdorf-Watt train station at 13:10. We will then walk to Zurich city center, where the concert will take place. We need to arrive before 17:00 for the concert, but it’s better to get there earlier to find a spot with a good view. It’s best if you’re in good shape and have sturdy hiking shoes, but I think this is one of the easiest routes I’ve ever done with the group. (Because message in a WhatsApp channel can be read by a new member only 30 days before he joins. But you can already enter the corresponding WhatsApp group) If you are concerned about privacy, only the admin of a WhatsApp channel can see who has voted in a poll (unlike a WhatsApp group). Please sign up only when you are certain! You can also register through Meetup, as it helps build momentum; however, I rely only on the number of people who signed up through the WhatsApp survey.

Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Venezuela’s Future—and Ours
Profs & Pints Northern Virginia: Venezuela’s Future—and Ours
[Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“Venezuela’s Future—and Ours,”** an analysis of how the Trump administration’s intervention in Venezuela will affect that nation, the U.S., and the rest of the world, with Ernesto Castañeda, Director of the Center for Latin American and Latino Studies and the Immigration Lab at American University. [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/nv-venezuela-future](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/nv-venezuela-future) .] On January 3rd, after a long military buildup, the United States used special forces to seize Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, from their residence in Caracas, Venezuela to stand trial here on criminal charges. The development marked a major turning point in our relationship with Venezuela and the rest of Latin America and raised a host of complex questions, not just for Venezuelans living inside and outside that country but for American citizens and other nations of the world. Coming to the stage to break down what all of this means is Ernesto Castañeda, a scholar of Latin America who has given several excellent Profs and Pints talks on immigration policy and has given dozens of interviews to media outlets around the world in the wake of the U.S. raid. In a talk offering informed perspective on the latest news developments, Professor Castañeda will discuss various theories about why the U.S. conducted the operation to get Maduro out of Venezuela. He’s put our nation’s current plans for Venezuela into context by touching on previous U.S. military interventions in Latin America and beyond. Professor Castañeda will look at the implications of recent events for U.S. politics and U.S. citizens and what such developments tell us about the balance of power in the United States. He’ll examine the distance between decisions made by the White House and public priorities, touching on how it all relates to our immigration policies and our views about peaceful protest and democracy. He’ll consider how the Venezuela raid and our actions since have altered relations between the U.S. and other nations and provide scenarios about what the future might hold. (Door: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. The talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image by Canva.
