All Out of Bubblegum Film Club 127 / Sunset Boulevard
Sunset Boulevard is a 1950 American dark comedy film noir directed by Billy Wilder and co-written by Wilder, Charles Brackett and D. M. Marshman Jr. It is named after a major street that runs through Hollywood and western Los Angeles. The film stars William Holden as Joe Gillis, a struggling screenwriter, and Gloria Swanson as Norma Desmond, a former silent-film star who draws him into her deranged fantasy world, where she dreams of making a triumphant return to the screen. Erich von Stroheim plays Max von Mayerling, her devoted butler, and Nancy Olson, Jack Webb, Lloyd Gough, and Fred Clark appear in supporting roles. Director Cecil B. DeMille and gossip columnist Hedda Hopper play themselves, and the film includes cameo appearances by silent-film stars Buster Keaton, H. B. Warner, and Anna Q. Nilsson. Praised by many critics when first released, Sunset Boulevard was nominated for 11 Academy Awards (including nominations in all four acting categories) and won three. It is often ranked among the greatest movies ever made. As it was deemed "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant" by the U.S. Library of Congress in 1989, Sunset Boulevard was included in the first group of films selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. In 1998, it was ranked number 12 on the American Film Institute's list of the 100 best American films of the 20th century.
Please note we will not be showing the film at the meeting. Make sure you watch the film before you attend and then come and join in with the conversation. It’s just a discussion. It’s not a screening. 🙏
We will be meeting in The Ludski Bar in the Rio Cinema.

Cinema—Close Up
Salam, Dustan!
‘[Abbas Kiarostami](https://www.closeupfilmcentre.com/search_results/keyword/abbas+kiarostami)’ has created some of the most inventive and transcendent cinema of the past thirty years, and *[Close-up](https://www.closeupfilmcentre.com/search_results/keyword/close-up)* is his most radical, brilliant work. This fiction-documentary hybrid uses a sensational real-life event—the arrest of a young man on charges that he fraudulently impersonated the well-known filmmaker [Mohsen Makhmalbaf](https://www.closeupfilmcentre.com/search_results/keyword/mohsen+makhmalbaf)—as the basis for a stunning, multilayered investigation into movies, identity, artistic creation, and existence, in which the real people from the case play themselves. With its universal themes and fascinating narrative knots, *[Close-up](https://www.closeupfilmcentre.com/search_results/keyword/close-up)* has resonated with viewers around the world.” – Janus Films
We’ll meet 10 minutes before the film and after for a chat and drinks at the cinema. Reservation link for the 6pm screening:

**Learn More About Laurel Graham:**
Laurel Graham is a singer-songwriter and author currently writing her debut novel, Romantic Girl, that comes with its own double soundtrack. The first album will be released on December 29, 2025.
Laurel began her professional career in media after studying Journalism in Ireland, and then began a career in the film industry, wearing many hats from assistant director to varying roles in production.
While developing the story of Romantic Girl about a girl trying to find her love story who gets addicted to a magical pair of rose-coloured glasses and ends up in Love Rehab, she got the idea to create a real-life Love Rehab.
Blending creativity with wellness, this program, being offered in collaboration with Amplify Her, will bring out personal insights, creative flow, and the inner child of everyone who joins.
The first ever Love Rehab finished on November 23, 2025, and one participant wrote about how one does not “graduate” from Love Rehab, but “emerge” from it. And she summed up the program so beautifully, “May you never forget that once upon a time, you walked into Love Rehab…and walked out loving yourself.”

· The Celebration · @ George Mason Regional Library
*Oddball Cinema Presents: Food for Thought*
*The Celebration* is a biting Danish film laced with dark humor, set during an elegant family gathering at a patriarch’s estate. As guests toast and speeches begin, cracks in the facade of respectability reveal a simmering undercurrent of tension. The film blends discomfort and satire, using awkward laughter and social ritual to explore the absurdity—and pain—of maintaining appearances.
