ALKEMI: a dialogue of cultures. Flamenco, Folk & Fusion.
Our musical host at Pulse & Pickle CIC for the communal dinner on Friday the 13th of February is Maria de Huelva. \-\-\-\-\-\-BIO\-\-\-\- Hailing from the village of Almonaster la Real in Andalusia’s Huelva province, María is a passionate musician and scholar deeply rooted in flamenco and Spanish folk traditions. With a degree in History (Archaeology) and a Master’s in Advanced Musical Studies (Ethnomusicology), she combines academic insight with cultural heritage. Beginning her guitar journey at age seven under John MacInnes, María went on to train in classical guitar for eight years while also mastering the three-holed pipe and tabor, traditional instruments of historic taborers. Actively performing as a guitarist, singer, and taborer, she brings spontaneity and joy to traditional celebrations across Spain and the UK. Inspired by London’s multicultural scene, she has also embraced the rubab, blending it into her repertoire with Spanish folk and flamenco \-\-\-\-ALKEMI\-\-\- Maria de Huelva presents a solo project where flamenco, folk, and fusion meet in a dynamic dialogue of cultures. Deeply connected to Spanish traditions yet shaped by academic exploration and personal storytelling, the repertoire reflects a meaningful journey through heritage and life experience. London’s vibrant multiculturalism provides an additional layer of inspiration, infusing the music with openness and innovation. The result is a powerful, evolving sound. Authentic, expressive, and contemporary, that resonates with audiences across borders. The evening’s Menu (Fully Vegan - Menu does not include Alcoholic and non alcoholic drinks that are sold separately) is inspired by Andalusian flavors and tastes. Starters Mushroom & Nuts croquettes served with Andalusian Salad. Main Spinach and Chickpeas Stew served with Marinated carrots. Dessert Spanish Pumpkin Flan. We also recognise that financial realities shape who can take part in such gatherings. To make our dinners accessible, we offer a Solidarity Sliding Scale: tickets range from £15 for those who need support, £25 at cost, and £30 or more for those able to contribute in solidarity. This approach allows people with different resources to sit at the same table and support one another’s participation. The income from each dinner goes directly toward paying fair wages to our team, supporting the artists and hosts who shape the events, and paying the local growers whose produce makes our food possible. More about the thoughts behind our communal dinners events - The Lost Art of Eating Togther If cost is a barrier to entry, please get in touch with us - contact@pulseandpickle.org Tickets available on HUMANITIX (it dedicates 100% of profits from booking fees to charity): https://events.humanitix.com/alkemi-a-dialogue-of-cultures

Shanty Singing on the Golden Hinde ship- London Bridge
Shanty Singing on the Golden Hinde ship- London Bridge
The Golden Hinde was the first English Ship to sail around the world, captained by Sir Francs Drake in the Elizabethan era. Besides hearing us, and joining in singing the choruses, you can also explore the ship. And for your further convenience, there is an on board bar with wine and beer at pub prices, and a flushing WC or two. We have always had top class guests who were lively and all of whom joined in singing the choruses, Below is also a link to a couple of videos on YouTube of us singing in this the ship, if you want to take a look and have a listen. The ship is currently in dry dock undergoing hull maintenance, and you can reach it by going to London Bridge Underground station, and from there it's five minute walk walk through Borough Market. And, by the way, when it was first built, this ship sailed from Devon to San Francisco, and from there onto Japan, where is starred in the original film production of Shogun [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grEsDWy2vBg](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=grEsDWy2vBg) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i3rAvEt5nY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9i3rAvEt5nY) And below is the ticket link on Eventbrite. Greenbelt International Folk Dancers
Greenbelt International Folk Dancers
Friday night Greenbelt International Folk Dancing has gone "virtual". As we all practice good social distancing, many in our folk dance community are feeling the absence of our usually scheduled local dances. In response, please join us for the Greenbelt Virtual Folk Dance Session. Let’s keep dancing! • Connect and dance in our own homes • Watch hosts leading familiar dances • See each other; listen and dance to our favorites How: We will be using the ZOOM video conferencing app to share music and live videos of the leaders and each other. This can be used on a desktop, laptop, or smartphone. What to Expect: Your hosts are Linda Mansdorf, Vita Hollander, Ben Hole, and John Robinson. Collectively they will play 25-30 dances, which should approximate the number of dances normally done on a Friday night in-person event. The hosts will do a quick teaching or demonstration of the steps to some of the dances that may be less familiar to you or just as a refresher, but the session is not designed as a workshop, so the majority of the evening will be spent playing dances that many of us already know and love to do. How To Join Us: Each week we will send an email with the Zoom Meeting link ID. Make sure John Robinson knows you would like to receive this email with the link. John's email address for Info: j_srobinson@verizon.net. https://www.facebook.com/GreenbeltInternationalFolkDancing/ Co-sponsored by the Folklore Society of Greater Washington
