We settle that at the start of the event. I will post what table we sit at when the event starts. Join us when Jakob Schmid takes us through the audio of antique video games. The early years of video games, the 1970s and 1980s, were an era of intense innovation in game hardware and software. Jakob always had a particular fondness for the games of this era, and has often used them as inspiration for his own projects. For instance, the 1981 arcade game Defender was a big inspiration for the music and sound of COCOON. Together, we will look at a selection of these video game antiques, from the time when sound effects, ambience, voice synthesis, and interactive and adaptive music were first invented for the medium. The implementation techniques were varied and unique - sound was produced from custom audio chips, software synthesis, discrete hardware components, cassette tapes, or even mechanical percussive devices. We will pick out a few examples of these techniques and go a little deeper into how they work. **Cabell Harris** is always thinking, It’s what he does... Ad Man. Designer. Professor. Entrepreneur. Futurist. Cabell’s career began in Richmond, Virginia. Fortunately, he was in the right place at the right time. Richmond was getting national attention as being one of the few creative hot spots outside New York. He continued building his reputation and portfolio by working for many distinguished companies in New York, Boston, and Los Angeles. In Los Angeles, Cabell founded WORK Inc. as an agency for agencies. He returned to his roots and relocated the agency to Richmond in 1995. Few individuals have worked for more agencies or brands than Cabell. Along with managing WORK, creating ad campaigns, corporate identities, packaging products, publishing books, building apps, and taking his own brands and products to market, Cabell was a professor for over 10 years at the VCU BrandCenter. Today, WORK has evolved into a brand consultancy working directly with clients who need innovative thinking. The development marked a major turning point in our relationship with Venezuela and the rest of Latin America and raised a host of complex questions, not just for Venezuelans living inside and outside that country but for American citizens and other nations of the world. Coming to the stage to break down what all of this means is Ernesto Castañeda, a scholar of Latin America who has given several excellent Profs and Pints talks on immigration policy and has given dozens of interviews to media outlets around the world in the wake of the U.S. raid. In a talk offering informed perspective on the latest news developments, Professor Castañeda will discuss various theories about why the U.S. conducted the operation to get Maduro out of Venezuela. He’s put our nation’s current plans for Venezuela into context by touching on previous U.S. military interventions in Latin America and beyond. Professor Castañeda will look at the implications of recent events for U.S. politics and U.S. citizens and what such developments tell us about the balance of power in the United States. He’ll examine the distance between decisions made by the White House and public priorities, touching on how it all relates to our immigration policies and our views about peaceful protest and democracy.
