Overview
Celebrate the eccentric and avant-garde spirit of Dadaism and James Joyce with a special Bloomsday Festival cabaret of readings and songs!
Kick off **[The Bloomsday Festival](https://www.bloomsdayfestival.ie/ "https://www.bloomsdayfestival.ie")** celebrations at **[The James Joyce Centre](https://www.jamesjoyce.ie/ "https://www.jamesjoyce.ie")** on **Thursday, 11th June at 8.30pm** with a Joyce-themed cabaret of readings, performance, music and natter, hosted by author **David Collard**.
Last year's gathering **[His Art Belongs to Dada](https://jamesjoyce.ie/events/his-art-belongs-to-dada-a-joycean-cabaret/ "https://jamesjoyce.ie/events/his-art-belongs-to-dada-a-joycean-cabaret/")** celebrated Joyce's links to ZĂŒrich (where he wrote much of *Ulysses*) and the anarchic artistic movement known as Dada (which was founded in that city). This year, David returns to the Joyce Centre to host **Dada Deux: A Joycean Cabaret**. We will be joined by novelist **RĂłnĂĄn Hession** (aka **Mumblin' Deaf Ro**), composer **David Bremner**, soprano **Suzanne Savage**, and (live via satellite from Venice, California) Joyce enthusiast and polymath **Gerry Fialka**.
Surprises and beneficial shocks are guaranteed at this informal one-off gathering, with a nod to 1920s Dada cabaret. There will be music, performance, readings, songs, conversation, audience participation -- and maybe a little whiskey. The evening offers a wildly entertaining start to the Bloomsday Festival and will appeal to seasoned Joyceans and newcomers alike. All are welcome!
**The Company**
**David Collard** writes for print and online publications including the *Times Literary Supplement*, *Literary Review*, *3:AM Magazine*, *gorse*, *Exacting Clam*, *White Review* and others. He lives in London, where he organises cultish online gatherings that showcase contemporary authors, indie publishers and other creative practitioners. His next book, another collection of 100 essays (but not about Joyce), will appear in June 2027.
**David Bremner** is a composer and musician from West Cumbria who moved to Ireland in 1999 and who now lectures in composition at the Dublin Conservatoire. With soprano Elizabeth Hilliard he runs the music/text production company Béal. He was Assistant Organist at Christ Church Cathedral Dublin until 2019, and has played with ensembles such as the RTà National Symphony Orchestra, Crash Ensemble, and Opera Theatre Company.
**Gerry Fialka** is an American experimental filmmaker, curator, lecturer, interviewer and writer. He leads workshops on experimental film, avant-garde music and art, subversive social media, books by James Joyce and Marshall McLuhanâs media theory. He was Frank Zappaâs archivist and production assistant for ten years, and worked for the legendary comedian George Carlin. *LA Weekly* has described Fialka as a âcultural revolutionary.â He lives in Venice, California where he runs a *Finnegans Wake* reading group.
**RĂłnĂĄn Hession** is a writer, musician and civil servant from Dublin. He has published three acclaimed novels: *Leonard and Hungry Paul* (2019), *Panenka* (2021) and *Ghost Mountain* (2024). The first of these was adapted as a six-part BBC television series in 2026. His next novel is *Richard Heart Julianne* (2027).
**Susanne Savage** is a Belfast-born singer, songwriter, violinist, and dynamic live performer whose musical journey spans continents and genres. Suzanne toured internationally as Principal Soprano Soloist with Riverdance and has since performed or recorded with major artists such as Paul Brady, Eleanor McEvoy, Roseanne Cash, Van Morrison, Jimmy Cobb, Ernie Watts Quartet, and emerging talents like David Lyttle and Matteo Addabbo. Based in Belfast and Dublin, she is a vital presence on the Irish and European music scenes.

French Speaking Practice â Real Conversation & Confidence Building
Do you understand French but struggle to speak naturally when itâs time to respond?
Join a relaxed **French conversation group** where we use a **real conversation between 2 native speakers** as a way to practise speaking French in a natural and structured way.
This is not a traditional lesson. Itâs a guided conversation space where you **practise speaking** through **real-life content**.
\#\# đ° This sessionâs topic : an **authentic French conversation** between 2 native speakers expressing their opinion about a movie.
In this session, we will work with a short clip of Tow french **Youtubers discussing a movie**đŹ.
\#\# đ„ BEFORE THE SESSION
Before the meetup, you will watch a short French vidéo clip from Youtube.
This video will give you the key vocabulary and context so you feel more comfortable speaking during the session.
You will also receive a few simple comprehension questions to help you prepare your ideas.
\#\# đŹ DURING THE MEETUP \(ONLINE\)
We will use this content as a starting point for discussion and speaking practice.
You will be guided through conversation questions to help you :
* Give your opinion about a film or video.
* Nuance your opinion (using expressions like a bit, rather, quite, not reallyâŠ).
* Compare or revise a previous judgement.
* Justify your opinion by giving reasons.
* Give a rating and explain your choice.
You donât need perfect French â the goal is to speak and build confidence.
\#\# đŁïž ACTIVITY FORMAT
The session will include :
* group discussion based on the video
* guided speaking questions
* interactive conversation practice
* a final speaking activity / role-play based on the scenario
*
\#\# đŻ WHAT YOU WILL IMPROVE
By the end of the session, you will have practised how to:
* speak more spontaneously in French
* understand and react to real French content
* build confidence when expressing ideas
* move from âI understandâ to âI can respondâ
\#\# đż ATMOSPHERE
This is a supportive, low-pressure environment. Mistakes are welcome and part of the learning process. The goal is communication, not perfection.
\#\# đ„ LEVEL
Intermediate French learners (you should already understand basic French and be able to form simple sentences).
\#\# â FREE EVENT â FEEDBACK APPRECIATED
This is a free session, and your feedback is very important for me as I build these conversation groups.
At the end of the meetup, Iâll kindly ask participants to leave a short review about their experience â it really helps others decide whether to join future sessions.
\#\# đ© Feel free to join or message me if you have any questions

Gonzo's Nose (reunion) @ FNL!!!
**Gonzo's Nose is the most popular party band in the national capitol area. Formed in the summer of 1996 by four musicians from the College of William and Mary, Gonzo's Nose brings solid musicianship to a massive setlist of cover songs, which range from the early 80's up until songs that hit the radio just yesterday.**
**We will meet by the beer tent.**
Glenstone Visit
Join us for a peaceful and inspiring Saturday morning at Glenstone on Saturday, June 20 at 10:00 AM!
Nestled in Potomac, Maryland, Glenstone is a unique destination where art, architecture, and nature blend together in a beautifully designed space meant for reflection and exploration. **Admission tickets are reserved; please only RSVP if you are committed to attending and arriving on time. The ticket entry time is 10 AM.**
Weâll spend the morning wandering through the indoor galleries, outdoor sculpture installations, serene walking paths, and landscaped grounds. Expect a relaxing mix of modern and contemporary art, peaceful scenery, and thoughtful conversation with fellow attendees. The campus is quite large, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Many visitors spend 2â4 hours exploring the grounds and exhibits.
If people are interested, we can go to lunch afterward.
