Kshama Sawant for Congress Fundraising Party
Kshama Sawant for Congress Fundraising Party
As the lone socialist on the Seattle city council, Kshama Sawant built movements of working people to win the nation's highest minimum wage and the Amazon Tax. She plans to take that fighting approach to the national level to challenge both corporate parties of ICE terror, war, and genocide. Come listen to live music and support the campaign!
Social Chess & tournament
Social Chess & tournament
This is a social chess meetup group first and foremost… Tournaments are a secondary background thought and only really if there is enough chess players. (don't worry, we are going to do tournaments and most likely at every event) Tournament will be rapid games. (This tournament will be for people rated under 2000) 15 minutes plus 10 seconds incremental (meaning an additional 10 seconds after every move) {you can practice playing these time controls on both Lichess.org and chess.com} Style of tournament will be based on how many players are there to start off with (such as round-robin, Swiss, Arena..etc..) Any additional players are welcome to socialize and play, since I will be keeping score I will socialize with others and even teach as well. Even if you don’t know how to play or are an absolute beginner you are welcome to come socialize and maybe even get a lesson. I will be teaching free lessons, just ask me when you are there and if there is time I will give you a lesson.. I will provide 5 chess sets & clocks enough for 10 players. All this being said, there will be one long table for the tournament (it can accommodate approximately 12 to 14 players at once, but more players than that can actually be in the tournament, I will explain how at the event). Players can leave at the end of any round and new players can enter at the beginning of the next round. At a second table, I will be teaching beginners &/or giving lessons to novices to intermediate level players. Also players that want to socialize more & play a leisure game of chess with either a 30 +20 time control or no clock can play at this table. But I do ask that if you can please bring a set (& clock if you have it). Thank you.
Food For Thought (F4T)
Food For Thought (F4T)
Food For Thought (F4T) is a friendly weekend brunch for people who enjoy discussing serious and "serious" topics with other smart, engaging people. We welcome everyone, whether you are a card-carrying philosopher or are maybe not quite sure who Plato was. The only qualification you need is that you enjoy thinking and eating and can do both at the same time! The F4T Brunch meets on the second and fourth Sunday of each month. We will have a new suggested topic each month, though wandering off topic is also allowed! (Good luck trying to stop that from happening.) These will span Science, Philosophy, Politics, History, Economics, and more. Attendees will be invited to propose the topic for the next brunch. We are a friendly group but we must restrict attendance to 12 members so we can all participate in a common conversation. And if you sign up, we expect you to show up! Two no-shows and you will be blocked from attending. To keep up-to-date on CFI-NYC events you should sign up for our monthly newsletter. Go to https://cfi-nyc.org/ and at the lower right click on Receive E-Mails. Topic for each event to be announced in the Comments section below...

A Philosophic Analysis of Free Speech and the First Amendment
A Philosophic Analysis of Free Speech and the First Amendment
**REQUIRED READING & VIEWING** * [The Political Philosophy of John Locke and Its Influence on the Founding Fathers and the Political Documents They Created](https://individualistideas.com/political-philosophy-of-john-locke/) **(paragraphs 2–5 and 2nd to last paragraph)** * [The History Of The Censorship Industry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFmln08Dq1U) (1 hour video) **INTRODUCTION** A major change in the culture is Americans' attitude to free speech. In this Meetup we'll explore the philosophic justifications for free speech and analyze the ideas and policies that threaten it. **POINTS OF DISCUSSION** * What is free speech? * What is its philosophic justification? * By what mechanism is free speech protected by the government? * Are there exceptions to free speech not protected by the first amendment, such as shouting "fire!" in a crowded theater? * Are "hate speech" and “mis-, dis- and malinformation," unique forms of speech that should be banned by private companies and/or the government? * Does the right to free speech conflict with the rights of companies like Chase, Facebook, PayPal, Etsy, and Airbnb to "de-platform" their users? * What are new threats to free speech that have arisen over the past two decades? **(Required viewing:** [The History Of The Censorship Industry](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFmln08Dq1U)) * What are the most concerning threats to free speech in 2026? After the event, any interested guests will be invited to continue the conversation at a nearby restaurant. \* \* \* \* \* \* \* Our Meetup location, Le Pain Quotidien, is a private business; so that our group remains welcome, please don't arrive with beverages purchased from outside, and please be willing to purchase at least one beverage and/or menu item from our waitress (rather than on the way in). **AN IMPORTANT NOTICE REGARDING NO-SHOWS** Unfortunately, there is a longstanding problem in our group with large numbers of people who sign up frivolously and neither cancel nor show up, leading to large waiting lists of others who lose their opportunity to attend. Please note that going forward, those who sign up and neither cancel nor show up or habitually cancel at the last minute will be permanently removed from the group. If you need to cancel, please have the courtesy to give at least 24 hours' advance notice so those on the waiting list have an opportunity to attend.
