Finding Peace and Happiness in the Teachings of the Buddha
Finding Peace and Happiness in the Teachings of the Buddha
## **Fostering a deeper sense of connection with ourselves and others** The Buddha taught that true happiness arises from a heart trained in wisdom and boundless care. In this 8-week course, we will enter deeply into the practice of the **Four Immeasurables (brahmavihāras): loving-kindness, compassion, appreciative joy, and equanimity**— practical skills for everyday life. These timeless practices offer powerful tools for improving mental health, strengthening emotional resilience, and fostering a deeper sense of connection with yourself and others. Through traditional teachings, guided meditation, and contemplation, participants will learn how these practices purify the mind, soften the heart, and lead to a happiness that is stable, profound, and not dependent on conditions. The Four Immeasurables are central to the Buddha’s path of liberation, supporting ethical living, mental clarity, and deep inner peace. Over eight weeks, we will explore: * Loving-kindness as the foundation of fearlessness and goodwill * Compassion as the courageous response to suffering for ourselves and others * Appreciative joy as an antidote to comparison, envy, and discouragement * Equanimity as the wisdom that holds all experience with care and without bias This course is suitable for both new and experienced practitioners who wish to ground their lives more fully in the Teachings of the Buddha. Participants are invited to discover the Four Immeasurables not merely as ideas, but as ways of being—pathways to a liberated heart and a life of genuine peace. Led by instructors with many years of experience of these teachings, each session consists of: * An exposition of the teachings of the Buddha as they apply to everyday life * Meditation practice * Time for contemplation * Group discussions and Q&A, offering you the opportunity to explore the teachings and practices in an open supportive environment. ## Audience This course is suitable for everyone seeking happiness ## Location **Avila Carmelite Centre**

Maker Night - Work on 3D projects using laser cutter, 3D Printer at TOG
**Do you like to make things? Would you like to use 3D software, lasercutter and 3D printing to help you make your idea?** TOG has an open evening to learn how CAD software and 3D fabrication tools can help you make your project. All you need to take part is your own laptop and some ideas on what you want to make. This is not a taught class, more like an informal working group of self-directed makers. We will be happy to help you explore how to use our 3D tools in designing and making your project whether you are a crafter, designer, engineer or hobbyist. Come and have a look at the tools in our space and get some ideas on how your project can be made.

Pattern Matching in Java
Pattern Matching in Java
In time honoured fashion, our first DubJUG events of the year are linked with the jChampions Conference, and today we're announcing our first visiting Java Champions of 2026, Cay Horstmann. **TALK ONE: Effective Pattern Matching in Java** Since Java 14, the Java switch and instanceof statements have been enhanced, in multiple phases, to support pattern matching and a "data-oriented" programming style. In this presentation, Cay explores when this programming style is beneficial, and why. (Spoiler: Not as often as one might think from Oracle's presentations, but when it does apply, it is truly useful.) Cay describes the syntax of pattern matching, as it has evolved, and shows how it will be further enhanced in upcoming versions of Java. He warns of corner cases of the switch syntax where modern usage clashes with legacy behavior. The talk concludes with a set of rules when to use pattern matching and "data orientation" now, how to prepare for future enhancements, and when to stay away. **TALK TWO: Virtual Threads, Structured Concurrency, Extent Locals: When to Use Them, and How.** Project Loom introduces a lightweight threading model to the Java platform. At first, the blogosphere erupted in displays of denial. Why do we need something new when threads and reactive programming have served us well? The next stage was anger. People tried to use virtual threads with use cases for which they were definitely not designed, and were upset that the results were bad. The purpose of this talk is to help the audience skip the next two stages of grief and skip ahead to acceptance. Cay will analyse typical concurrent programming tasks and show how to assess their Loom-friendliness. He will dig into the new concepts of structured concurrency and extent locals and give examples of when to use them, and when to stick with existing practice. As a result, attendees should be able to walk away with a more nuanced understanding of when and how to employ virtual threads in their systems. OFFICIAL SEATS >>>>> Check your schedule first (it's not cool to not show!) https://ti.to/dublin-java-user-group/2601-jchampions-cay-horstmann
Zazen Meditation + Dharma talk or Kinhin
Zazen Meditation + Dharma talk or Kinhin
The meaning of the word zen is meditation, zazen means sitting meditation. In zazen practice we begin to know ourselves, and to go beyond the limits of our personal ego. Within our tradition zazen is referred to as shikantaza, not doing, letting go of thoughts, dropping off body and mind. This sitting meditation is the focus of our practice. Language limits our ability to communicate the true nature of zen; it is something that is better understood through practice. We are open to everyone interested in learning about zen. Intro workshop for newcomers is available at 5.30pm each Sunday. The dojo is a sacred place and it is important to be considerate of everyone. We have many people that travel to practise together once a week or once a month. So for that reason it is really essential that we all know the structure of the sitting practise (when to sit, how to do Kinhin, the different bell sounds and their meaning etc), to ensure a silent, safe and meaningful meditation. And it's also great to meet everyone before the sitting practise. And answer any questions you may have. We have zafus and zabutons (mats and cushions) for all to sit on. Chairs are available too. Comfortable clothing for sitting, black or neutral tones best. We greatly appreciate a donation of €5 to cover costs if it's possible for you. Please arrive 10min before start so 6ish (if you're not doing the intro workshop). You are very welcome to our dojo!
📚 Books & Social 🍸
📚 Books & Social 🍸
📚Reading books and discussing them are two distinct experiences! Conversations about books and sharing insights help us better appreciate literature and enrich our lives. Let's grab a drink (alcoholic or non-alcoholic) and discuss books we're currently reading or have recently enjoyed—whether poetry, fiction, or non-fiction. Bring your physical book or e-reader. There's no formal structure or agenda—just books and good conversation.💬 It's a perfect place to get book recommendations and rediscover your reading momentum if you've hit a slump. We welcome readers of all backgrounds and interests! ⚠️**Something Happened?** If something unpleasant happened to you, it may happen to others. Even if it seems minor, don't hesitate to reach out to me. 🔍 **How to find us?** * When I reach the venue, I'll leave a comment in the meetup where the group is seated. Normally, the booking is in my name, so you can ask the staff for the group. * If you're unable to find us, leave a comment in the meetup page. I'll be able to guide you. We highly encourage you to move between tables and strike up conversations with fellow book lovers. These discussions about literature and reading recommendations are often the highlight of the event! As an organizer, I'm always looking for feedback about the event and suggestions for new events, so feel free to suggest ideas to me. 💡 I look forward to seeing you all! 😊
