Longform Course: The Flat by Matthijs Meulblok
#### Level: Advanced
*What really happens behind closed doors?*
The Flat is an advanced long-form improv course inspired by Rear Window and the quiet drama of everyday lives lived side by side. Set in a shared apartment building, this format invites you to explore the unseen worlds of neighbours who observe each other from a distance, collide unexpectedly, and slowly reveal who they really are.
Across the course, you and your fellow players will build a living, breathing building filled with recognisable characters and intertwined storylines. Windows become frames. Hallways become crossroads. Small details grow into big consequences. Together, you will create a fully improvised performance of forty minutes or more that feels coherent, cinematic, and emotionally grounded.
Is there romance blossoming across balconies? A secret criminal operation hidden behind tidy curtains? Or simply a lonely man whose strongest relationship is with his cat? The Flat thrives on contrast, tension, and quiet observation, allowing humour and drama to sit side by side. The audience becomes a voyeur, peeking into private lives and watching stories unfold over time.
This course focuses on long-form improvisation as collective storytelling. You will work on sustaining narrative over a longer arc, making bold but consistent character choices, and trusting the ensemble to carry the story together. Editing is treated as a creative tool rather than an interruption, helping scenes flow smoothly and keeping the audience oriented and engaged.
Throughout the course, you will deepen your understanding of longform structure and develop the patience and confidence required to let stories emerge naturally. You will practise playing multiple scenes on stage, supporting parallel storylines, and staying true to your characters as they evolve. The emphasis is on emotional truth, recognisability, and commitment, allowing scenes to resonate long after the laugh has faded.
This is a course for players who enjoy subtlety as much as spectacle, and who want to challenge themselves to create something layered, restrained, and powerful.
#### Who this course is for
This course is intended for experienced improvisers who want to deepen their longform work. You should have completed at least four improv courses or have a solid foundation in character building, story spine, and editing. You are comfortable on stage, curious about narrative structure, and ready to invest in slower, more detailed scene work. This course is not suitable for beginners.
The Flat has previously been directed and taught by Matthijs and performed by groups such as Pure Chocolade at the Impro XL Longform Festival in Hoorn, and Liever Veul Bloemen in Wageningen.
#### About the teacher
Matthijs Meulblok studied Media Studies at Utrecht University and runs his own podcast studio at Wolvenplein, where he records podcasts and voice overs and coaches people in voice acting, podcasting, and media performance.
He has performed with multiple improv groups in different countries, trains a variety of ensembles, and regularly teaches specialised workshops. Since 2025, he has also been exploring stand-up comedy as part of his own performance practice. Matthijs is known for creating thoughtful, thematic lessons and for developing innovative formats in both short-form and long-form improvisation. His teaching combines clarity, creativity, and a strong sense of narrative play.

Swimming lessons for adults | Beginners
If you are living in The Netherlands, by now, you may well have noticed the amount of open water. If you enjoy cycling in the city, you may wish to feel safer as you navigate the bridges and canals. And you may also want to get ready for visiting the beach, pools or the many lakes this summer.
Learning how to swim takes approx 1 year and it all starts with the very first lesson. New comers enroll via our website and pay € 30,50, this is the first lesson and a goody bag. After the class you agree with the personal swim coach how to continue to obtain your final objectives.
Enrolling is only possible via [www.your-personal-swim-coach.nl ](https://www.your-personal-swim-coach.nl/)hence a rvsp via meetup is not enough.
HPC @ SURF
Every 2 months, we'll visit a company or institute that will host the event and provide talks.
This time, we’re visiting **SURF**. You may know SURF as the organization behind the **Snellius supercomputer**, but its role is much broader. SURF is the IT cooperative for education and research in the Netherlands, offering advanced services for computing, storage, networking, and much more.
If you want to get a sense of their work, check out the SURF tag on [Tweakers](https://tweakers.net/tag/SURF/) or visit their website at [surf.nl](https://surf.nl).
The talks are the following:
1. Short intro to Quantum Computing, by David Maier (SURF), 4 minutes
2. FPGAs in HPC, by Mohsen Safari (SURF), 30 minutes
3. Running CUDA on AMD GPUs (without using HIP), by Chris Kitching (Spectral Compute), 30 minutes
For those who visited the previous meetup at Stream HPC, you already know what to expect: deep dives into technical subjects, snacks and drinks, and enough time to socialize.
**Important**
Would you like to join the Data Center tour at SURF before the event? Please register below. **Please note that the registration closes on 14.01.26 at 17:00.** The Data Center tour will start at 15:30 sharp.

Discovering Buddhism Series - Refuge in the Buddha, Dharma & Sangha
🗓 Starts Monday Jan 12 both at our center and online. **For this course you need to register via our website:** https://www.maitreya.nl/nl/programma/db-module-7-refuge-in-the-three-jewels/2026-01-12
📚This is a foundational series in Buddhist philosophy and practice, aimed at giving students a solid footing in the practice of Mahayana Buddhism. By engaging in this series, students gain a theoretical and experiential taste of the Buddha’s teachings, into Buddhist meditation, and the skills you need to make your life most meaningful. Discovering Buddhism is developed by an array of international teachers from FPMT under the guidance of Lama Zopa Rinpoche. It is designed not only as an academic study of Buddhism - it is meant to change your life!
✨“Taking refuge is the first step on the Buddhist path to inner freedom, but it is not something new. We have been taking refuge all our lives, though mainly in external things, hoping to find security and happiness. Buddhist refuge is a process of turning inward that begins with our discovery of our own unlimited potential as human beings. This discovery generates tremendous zeal for the development of our own inborn wisdom-energy.” Lama Yeshe

Real Estate #1: Kasteel Groeneveld – Architecture and Life in the 18th Century
**Real Estate** is a new series dedicated to exploring villas, estates, and remarkable buildings across the Netherlands — places that are often overlooked, not because they lack beauty or significance, but because they still exist quietly within the fabric of everyday life.
The first event of the series takes us to **Kasteel Groeneveld**, an elegant 18th-century country estate in Baarn with a distinctly international character. Built as a buitenplaats for the ruling elite, Groeneveld offers a rare opportunity to explore how architecture, landscape, art, and daily life were once woven together.
During our visit, we will explore both the **castle itself** and its vast **130-hectare estate**, discovering how regents lived, how the gardens and kitchen plots functioned, and how nature and culture were carefully shaped to coexist. The park is full of quiet details and unexpected corners that reveal a different perspective on Dutch history and landscape design.
This is not a rushed visit or a checklist of highlights, but a slow exploration of a place designed to be experienced through movement, space, and time.
### Practical information
* **Meeting point:** 13:00 at bus stop *Drakenburgerweg*, Baarn
* We will walk together from there to the estate and begin the exploration
* Comfortable shoes are recommended due to the size of the park
### After the visit
After exploring the estate, we will stop at **Grand Café Groeneveld**, located on the grounds of the castle. The café offers a small but interesting selection of beers from local microbreweries such as **Swarte Os** and **Gooische**, providing a relaxed moment to reflect and exchange impressions after the walk.
**Real Estate** is about discovering places that quietly shape the cultural landscape of the Netherlands — buildings and estates that tell stories not through spectacle, but through presence.
Offroad ride #1 2026, easy offroad, beginner friendly!
Offroading ride in Diermen, Meerveld, Lunteren.
Our usual easy "get back into riding" route.
Meeting at 10am, will ride +-120km of a mixed road and offroad. Should be a 40/60 mix, the route (as usual...) may be a bit outdated and sections may need to be circumvented.
The route is relatively easy and flat with moderate hardpacked sand stretches (unless rainy, then expect mud ;) ).
Will ride unless there are thunderstorms, so if it's just rain, bring your rain gear...
Also bring snacks. We will stop for food if there's a nice place to do so.
All skill level riders welcome to join. Our experienced riders have patience to teach and help you get accustomed to adventure riding if you are new to it.
ADV tires are required (knobbies, preferably at least 40/60).
See you then!

After the break you’ll learn how to build a playful, sarcastic, and deliberately absurd AI pair programmer while gaining practical insights into agentic LLM workflows, RAG, vector search, and deep integrations that let your assistant mischievously meddle with your code and environment.
Join us for an evening of practical insights, real-world lessons, and community connection!
The meetup will be hosted by **adesso**, Jaarbeursboulevard 294, Utrecht.
Please join us and RSVP!

**Are We Ready For The Next Cyber Security Crisis Like Log4Shell?**
"AI era is bright, but full of terrors!"
In a world where vulnerabilities like Log4Shell, Spring4Shell, and the XZ Backdoor make headlines, securing our software ecosystem has never been more critical. In this session, Soroosh, a hands-on architect with experience working on security platform services for large enterprises like Rabobank, will share practical strategies and best practices for securing the software development process, applicable to both small startups and large organizations.
Key takeaways and questions that will be answered in this session:
* [Live Demo] What is a "Supply Chain Attack," and how dangerous can it be?
* An example of lateral movement that begins with a basic SQL injection attack and escalates to gaining root access to a Kubernetes cluster
* Exploring new attack vectors in the AI era and the defense strategies to detect, prevent and mitigate them
* Most effective practices to secure your CI/CD process
* Practical strategies on how Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) help us prepare for the next Log4Shell crisis?
* What does DevSecOps mean, and what is its main objective?
**How to build your own fun and absurd pair programmer**
Tired of AI assistants that are always so boring and soulless? Alexander was. So, he decided to build his own. An AI assistant with personality, flair, and a healthy dose of sarcasm. Imagine a pair programmer that offers sarcastic feedback, makes absurd suggestions, and threatens to blow up your code when it disagrees with your changes. And when things get too quiet, it might even challenge you to a game of tic-tac-toe.
This session is for anyone who believes the best way to learn new technologies is by playfully breaking them. If you’re curious about LLMs and agents beyond the typical use cases, this talk is for you. You’ll leave with practical insights into building your own agentic LLM workflows using Spring Boot, vector databases, and locally running models. Alexander will talk about Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) flows that feed LLMs the right context, multi-vector search for fast context retrieval, and Model Context Protocol (MCP) integrations that let the assistant directly meddle with your file system.
Come to learn, chuckle, and get inspired to create your own dysfunctional digital sidekick.

Photo Class: Photographic Composition – Essential Techniques
THIS CLASS IS OFFERED THROUGH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER
**PLEASE REGISTER WITH CAPITAL PHOTOGRAPHY CENTER, NOT MEETUP!**
https://capitalphotographycenter.com/classes/class/2026-02-01-photographic-composition-essential-techniques
The composition of a photograph is the single most important element a photographer uses to convey an artistic statement. What’s included, excluded and the arrangement of elements within the frame is all part of composition.
This class will teach you techniques to improve the composition of your photos with hands-on shooting experience coupled with feedback.
Join instructor Michael Koren as you learn about composition in the Postal Museum and Union Station. The class begins with a lesson and viewing examples of compositional techniques from master photographers to help you when composing your own photographs.
We'll then go to specific locations to practice those composition techniques. Afterwards, participants will have free time to photograph all the museum has to offer.
We’ll follow up with a gentle critique and feedback of your best work of the day.
This class is about "seeing" stronger images. Any camera will do from DSLRs to mobile phones. If you *are*bringing a DSLR or mirrorless camera, lenses in the range of 18-135 would work well. No tripods allowed for this class.
Questions can be directed to Marie Joabar at info@capitalphotographycenter.com.
