Hogtrough Hill (13 miles)
However sudden cataclysmic events may appear, signals are visible beforehand for those who care to look. England in 1050 was cracking apart under pious King Edward the Confessor, born and raised a Norman, most at home among his Norman friends, ruling a Saxon land.
The church on a downland hill at Cudham reflected the transition of its age. Narrow Anglo-Saxon windows sit within early Norman setting. Beneath the many later modifications, the long narrow nave's origin is clearly pre-conquest.
The road from Cudham leads to and from Hogtrough Hill, 235m/770ft high, with 330ft of vertical ascent for us to enjoy. And all Oyster friendly from Zone 6.
WALK START: 10.50 AM outside KNOCKHOLT rail station (Zone 6). The walk ends at CHELSFIELD rail station (Zone 6). Village/pub stops in Cudham. Bring a packed lunch.
TRAVEL: The 10.10 from London Bridge arrives at KNOCKHOLT at 10.50. Alternatively the 10.24 from London Bridge will allow you to catch the same train by changing at Orpington. Travelcards, Oyster & Contactless cover all travel.
*How to join?*
* The walk is entirely free of charge;
* You only arrange for your own travel and pub expenses;
* Understand our terms and conditions below (the "IMPORTANT" part);
* Understand how to stay safe outdoors, as you will be responsible for yourself. See our quick safety tips:
http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/
*What to bring*
* Plenty of water, 1-2 litres recommended
* Enough snacks and packed lunch to keep you energized along the walk
* Extra snacks and an extra packed lunch just in case
* Rainproof (ideally waterproof) clothing, sturdy shoes/boots you don't mind getting muddy
* Spare socks
* Walking poles and/or an umbrella :-)
* Yourself...
* ...and your camera!
* Cash for train ticket
* Cash for pub at the end of the walk?
Feel free to ask any questions in the comments section!
IMPORTANT
Please bear in mind this is a free of charge, self-guided trip with a hobby group. It is not organized by a business nor any entity with commercial purposes.
Any trip details, travel advice, route planning, instructions and other content in our group merely represent our shared personal knowledge, research and suggestions as outdoor enthusiasts. As this is no business, there is no "product", "service" or "package" and also no "tour guide", "operator" or "walk leader".
Each participant is responsible for their own safety. Even if some of us are very experienced walking outdoors, nobody assumes responsibility for any kind of injury, damage or loss that may happen.
Despite this, we take extreme precautions and all trips we plan are very safe, fun, highly educational and popular. Our experienced members volunteer their time and effort to shape a pleasant and quality adventure for everyone :-)
By participating you acknowledge and agree with this disclaimer.
Here are our tips on staying safe during outdoor trips:
http://www.meetup.com/Free-Outdoor-Trips-From-London/about/
TRAVEL, ACCOMMODATION, INSURANCE
Although we provide detailed suggestions, each participant is expected to arrange their own travel and (if required) accommodation - this gives everyone the freedom and choice to join from wherever they want and stay wherever they want. Anyone interested in travel or outdoor insurance should also arrange this on their own. As mentioned above we always take extreme precautions, but some people may still feel safer if covered.
We advise not to buy tickets until the day. People getting tickets from the same station are encouraged to meet early on the day to benefit from discounts such as GroupSave.
The Dickensian Walk, 3.5 miles
* We will start with Coram's fields, where 200 years ago philanthropist Captain Thomas Coram, appalled by he many homeless youths living in the streets, built a “hospital for the maintenance and education of the exposed and deserted young children”. It's often thought that this place might have inspired Dickens to write Oliver Twist.
* We will then proceed to Lambs Conduit Street, Grays Inn, Lincoln's Inn fields, Sir John Soane's Museum, , Seven Stars pub, Maughan Library and Dr Johnson's House.
* If it's not too busy, we will pop in Ye Olde Cheshire Cheese pub, just to get the feel of the place that was frequented by the likes of Dickens, Dr Johnson, Voltaire, Conan Doyle, Mark Twain and Oscar Wilde.
* We will then carry on by the Royal Courts of Justice, this is where the west limit of the City of London is. We will then proceed to see the last Inns of Court – the Middle Temple. This is where Dickens studied the whole time whilst he was writing Bleak House.
* Finally, we will see 2 Temple place, commissioned by and built for William Waldorf Astor in the 1890s. They have a free exhibition here called The Weight of Being running from 24th January to 19 April 2026, Tuesday-Sunday.
* We will finnish our walk at the Temple tube station (district line). Optional lunch/drinks at the end of the walk
What to bring:
Comfortable footwear
Water
Photo-taking gadgets and chargers
An umbrella just in case (it's London after all)
The walk is free for members who have subscribed for an annual membership. For other members the fee is £5 cash/card on arrival to contribute towards the organiser's meetup fees and costs.
The annual pass option is £15 payable by cash/card on the day. This will provide access to at least 40 walks per year (members are welcome to bring a guest to each event).
All walks are free for the NHS staff (also welcome to bring a guest).
***'No Show' Policy:*** *If the member replied 'yes' but did not attend the event, did not update the RSVP and did not inform the organisers on 3 occasions – this triggers an automatic removal from the group. That's once for events with a waiting list.*

Board Games in Finsbury Park 🎲♟️🐺
**Whether you’re brand new to board games or just looking for a cosy way to meet people, this night is designed with you in mind.**
We run our board game night twice a month, always in the same venue, and with the same familiar hosts. Our aim is simple: create the kind of event you enjoy so much that you want to come back - and maybe make a few new friends along the way.
**Please use the link below to sign up to this event.**
[https://dplsk.eventcube.io/events/93264/board-games-at-finsbury-park/](https://dplsk.eventcube.io/events/93264/board-games-at-finsbury-park/)
**⭐ What Makes This Event Special ⭐**
**The Venue:** Blighty is cosy, colourful, and just a little bit quirky — like the living room of your eccentric aunt. It’s worlds away from the noise, crowds, and sticky tables of pubs and bars.
**The Games:** We currently own 55 games, including favourites like Articulate, Codenames, and Secret Hitler. Every game is hand‑picked for maximum fun and easy learning.
**The Hosts:** They are some of the loveliest people you will ever meet on Meetup. It doesn’t matter if it is your 1st time or 100th time coming to the board game night, they will always make you feel welcome.
**🎯 Who This Event Is For 🎯**
This night is perfect for people who are new to board games or just want something light, social, and easygoing.
* You don’t need to know any games beforehand.
* You’re welcome to come alone or with a friend - either is completely fine.
This is not a hardcore gaming night. You won’t find Dungeons & Dragons or Magic: The Gathering here.
**💷 Price — £5 per person 💷**
Your contribution helps us keep the event fresh and fun:
* We buy new games every month to expand and update our collection.
* Any games we no longer need are donated back to the community through regular giveaways.
Please note that tickets are non-refundable and non-transferrable.
