In time honoured fashion, our first DubJUG events of the year are linked with the jChampions Conference, and today we're announcing our first visiting Java Champions of 2026, Cay Horstmann. **TALK ONE: Effective Pattern Matching in Java** Since Java 14, the Java switch and instanceof statements have been enhanced, in multiple phases, to support pattern matching and a "data-oriented" programming style. In this presentation, Cay explores when this programming style is beneficial, and why. (Spoiler: Not as often as one might think from Oracle's presentations, but when it does apply, it is truly useful.) Cay describes the syntax of pattern matching, as it has evolved, and shows how it will be further enhanced in upcoming versions of Java. He warns of corner cases of the switch syntax where modern usage clashes with legacy behavior. The talk concludes with a set of rules when to use pattern matching and "data orientation" now, how to prepare for future enhancements, and when to stay away. **TALK TWO: Virtual Threads, Structured Concurrency, Extent Locals: When to Use Them, and How.** Project Loom introduces a lightweight threading model to the Java platform. At first, the blogosphere erupted in displays of denial. Why do we need something new when threads and reactive programming have served us well? The next stage was anger. People tried to use virtual threads with use cases for which they were definitely not designed, and were upset that the results were bad. The purpose of this talk is to help the audience skip the next two stages of grief and skip ahead to acceptance. Cay will analyse typical concurrent programming tasks and show how to assess their Loom-friendliness. He will dig into the new concepts of structured concurrency and extent locals and give examples of when to use them, and when to stick with existing practice. As a result, attendees should be able to walk away with a more nuanced understanding of when and how to employ virtual threads in their systems. My name is Aurelie and I'm graduating with an MSc in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Limerick. I run monthly **machine learning** and **deep learning** tutorials in Dublin with a small group of people. \*\*In this tutorial, we will build a **K-Nearest Neighbors** model to classify data into groups (neighbours) using the built-in algorithm from **Scikit-learn**. Together, we will walk through the full pipeline from data preprocessing to model training and evaluation. You will receive a jupyter notebook with reusable code showing all of these steps. No set up required, just a laptop and a google email address :) **The tutorials are limited to 15 participants and you can reserve your spot either here or by emailing aureliem219@gmail.com. Please make sure to book as soon as possible, as the registration count on Meetup does not guarantee availability.** **For more information about the tutorials:** * The tutorials are interactive and will be conducted using **Jupyter notebooks** on **Google Colaboratory** (a free, cloud-based platform that lets us write and run code directly in the browser). While **Google Colaboratory** is free to use, tasks that require more computational power (such as training deep learning models) may benefit from GPU access. In that case, Google offers a once-off payment for around €10 which can last several months depending on your usage. Some familiarity with **Python** or other programming languages is helpful but not required. Everyone is welcome to join and learn at their own pace. * The tutorial lasts for 1.5 hours. * During the tutorial, I share the Jupyter notebook with participants so they can keep it for future reference. We go through the notebook step by step together and I do my best to answer any questions along the way. * The notebook includes the complete code from data preparation to model training and evaluation. It can be reused or adapted for your own business needs or personal projects * We will be working with a variety of **Python** libraries including **Scikit-learn**, **PyTorch**, **TensorFlow**, **Keras**, **Seaborn**, **Pandas** and **Matplotlib** and the **Hugging Face** framework. These tools will help us explore different machine learning and deep learning techniques using publicly available datasets. * Each tutorial focuses on a different algorithm in depth. Topics covered include **linear regression**, **logistic regression**, **K-means clustering**, **decision trees**, **artificial neural networks (ANNs)**, **convolutional neural networks (CNNs)** for image classification, **object detection** and **natural language processing**. The goal is to break down each technique step by step, making it approachable and practical for real-world applications. The tutorials take place at the **Camdem court hotel in Dublin 2** at **the bar or the restaurant** if the bar is full (coffees need to be ordered at the restaurant). The meaning of the word zen is meditation, zazen means sitting meditation. In zazen practice we begin to know ourselves, and to go beyond the limits of our personal ego. Within our tradition zazen is referred to as shikantaza, not doing, letting go of thoughts, dropping off body and mind. This sitting meditation is the focus of our practice. Language limits our ability to communicate the true nature of zen; it is something that is better understood through practice. We are open to everyone interested in learning about zen. Intro workshop for newcomers is available at 5.30pm each Sunday. The dojo is a sacred place and it is important to be considerate of everyone. We have many people that travel to practise together once a week or once a month. So for that reason it is really essential that we all know the structure of the sitting practise (when to sit, how to do Kinhin, the different bell sounds and their meaning etc), to ensure a silent, safe and meaningful meditation. And it's also great to meet everyone before the sitting practise. And answer any questions you may have. We have zafus and zabutons (mats and cushions) for all to sit on. Chairs are available too. Comfortable clothing for sitting, black or neutral tones best. We greatly appreciate a donation of €5 to cover costs if it's possible for you. Title: Geometric Machine Learning with Symmetries and Graphs: Applications in Molecular Problems Date: Jan 31 2026 Noon - 14:00 EST Abstract: For geometric problems, symmetry equivariant machine learning has emerged as the modus operandi. In physics, symmetry is treated as the north star, the guiding principle for problem characterization and method optimization. Geometric features are inherently compatible with continuous Lie groups (and therefore symmetries), leading to continuous parametrization and successful training methodologies. The general mapping of a classical embedding and a quantum mechanical embedding will be discussed in terms of group theoretical concepts. In the context of embeddings, graph embedding is also a powerful method for machine learning problems taking better care of inter-relations among nodal variables. Classical and quantum neural networks with different subsets of the concepts mentioned will be defined and learning attempted with. The dataset under study is geometric molecular data (from quantum mechanical models) with varying geometric complexity. Performance comparison will include accuracy metrics, generalizability metrics, and.general remarks about expressivity. Bio: Dr Saumya Biswas completed a Master's degree in electrical engineering from University of California Riverside in 2016, a PhD in Physics from University of Oregon in 2021. He has been serving as a PostDoc at University of Maryland from 2022.
