SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: The Folklore of Love Spells
SOLD OUT-Profs & Pints DC: The Folklore of Love Spells
**This talk has completely sold out in advance and no door tickets will be available.** [Profs and Pints DC](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Folklore of Love Spells,”** on the use of magic to influence romantic destinies, with Cory Thomas Hutcheson, folklorist, lecturer at Middle Tennessee State University, and author of *New World Witchery: A Trove of North American Folk Magic.* [Advance tickets: $13.50 plus sales tax and processing fees. Available at [https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/folklore-of-love-spells](https://www.ticketleap.events/tickets/profsandpints/folklore-of-love-spells) .] Looking for a distinct follow-up to Valentine’s Day? Come to the Washington D.C.’s Hill Center for a rich, ribald, and riotous exploration of the use of romantic enchantments in history and folklore. You’ll feel spellbound as you listen to folklorist Cory Thomas Hutcheson, who has earned a big following of loyal fans in giving Profs and Pints talks in Nashville. On his visit to the nation’s capital he’ll discuss a delicious assortment of methods—alluring and occasionally appalling—that people historically have used to find, catch, or hold others to them. Dr. Hutcheson will present talismans, potions, charms, and more from the pages of history, exploring the principles at work in each. You'll hear about how counting stars can lead to dreams of future lovers, why some women in the Ozarks once nailed turkey wishbones above their doors, and how a meal of fish, cheese, or chocolate might lead to seduction—or the hospital. His talk will cover everything from fortune-telling charms designed to predict the future of a relationship to secretive formulae intended to drive a couple apart. Look Cupid in the eye and ask him "Why?" as we explore this raucous mixture of magic, belief, folklore, and story. If nothing else, you’ll end up loving this learning experience. (Doors: $17, or $15 with a student ID. Listed time is for doors. Talk starts 30 minutes later.) Image from Gratis Graphics (Pixexid / Creative Commons).

Almost Spring Hike to National Cathedral via Cleveland Park
Almost Spring Hike to National Cathedral via Cleveland Park
Happy New Year, Folks! On Saturday, we will hike to the National Cathedral from Cleveland Park. Our hike will combine glorious architecture, one of the most expensive neighborhoods in DC, the least-known best trail in the city, and a shortcut through the woods past the International School to Macomb Street. The featured photo is from a hike last Spring. John kindly updated the map to parallel the route we take. The hike has some uphill stretches going to the Cathedral but tame stuff mostly. There is an [old-style Italian deli](https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-1-d&q=vace%27s%20italian%20deli&tbs=lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e2!1m4!1u22!2m2!21m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:9&tbm=lcl&rflfq=1&num=10&rldimm=10778690468746188451&lqi=ChN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpSIrbzePngICACFonEAAQARACGAAYARgCIhN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKgQIAxACkgEEZGVsaZoBJENoZERTVWhOTUc5blMwVkpRMEZuU1VRMk9EVjFNbXBCUlJBQqoBHwoJL20vMDl5MmsyEAEqECIMaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKADgAQA&phdesc=clTALiFHOKU&ved=2ahUKEwiK9_Te7bv8AhUoM1kFHZdeCKYQvS56BAgLEAE&sa=X&rlst=f#rlfi=hd:;si:10778690468746188451,l,ChN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpSIrbzePngICACFonEAAQARACGAAYARgCIhN2YWNlJ3MgaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKgQIAxACkgEEZGVsaZoBJENoZERTVWhOTUc5blMwVkpRMEZuU1VRMk9EVjFNbXBCUlJBQqoBHwoJL20vMDl5MmsyEAEqECIMaXRhbGlhbiBkZWxpKADgAQA,y,clTALiFHOKU;mv:%5B%5B39.1842519,-77.05127639999999%5D,%5B38.9198496,-77.1609544%5D%5D;tbs:lrf:!1m4!1u3!2m2!3m1!1e1!1m4!1u2!2m2!2m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e1!1m4!1u1!2m2!1m1!1e2!1m4!1u22!2m2!21m1!1e1!2m1!1e2!2m1!1e1!2m1!1e3!3sIAE,lf:1,lf_ui:9) named Vace's a block from the hike start/finish point that has great pizzas by the slice. ❶ **What we'll do:** * Let's meet at Cleveland Park Metro (on the formerly TARGET side of Connecticut Ave NW) and walk down Connecticut Ave NW, cross at the Kennedy-Warren, follow Devonshire and Courtland Pl NW to 29th St NW, and follow 29th St south to Cleveland Ave SW. The Garbage That Built New York: A Walk Through NYC’s Trash & Rat History
Tickets: $39.98 ( incl. $4.98 fees ) (advance registration required) Click the link below to officially register for this experience: [https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1981158405121](https://www.nyadventureclub.com/event/1981158405121) New York City wasn’t just built on ambition — it was built on trash. While the city is famous for its race to the skies, its growth has always depended on what was buried or swept up below. From survival to scandal to unexpected innovation, it’s time to explore the city’s overlooked ecosystem of garbage and vermin — one that shares a story just as compelling as the skyline above. Join [New York Adventure Club](https://www.nyadventureclub.com "https://www.nyadventureclub.com") as we hit the streets of Lower Manhattan to uncover how garbage, rats, and sanitation crises left their mark — not just on the city's physical landscape, but also its public health systems and political history. Led by Suzanne Reisman — a NYC licensed tour guide, author of *Off the Beaten Subway Track*, and graduate of both the NYC Department of Health’s Rat Academy and Department of Sanitation’s Trash Academy — our unique experience will include: * **A walk along Wall Street** to examine its origins as a colonial garbage dump and its troubling role in early New York history * **A stroll through the South Street Seaport area** exploring landfill expansion, the former Fulton Fish Market, and notorious rat lore * **A visit to DeLury Square and surrounding alleys** to unpack the 1968 sanitation strike, union power, and NYC’s garbage politics * **An exploration of Ann Street and Theatre Alley** highlighting real rat incidents, rat reproduction, and why we can't kill our way out of the rat problem * **An overview of how modern sanitation systems evolved** in response to garbage overload, vermin outbreaks, and civic pressure If we're lucky, we'll see some rats in action...from a distance! See you there! \*Please bring a water bottle and comfortable pair of shoes as we’ll be doing a lot of walking! \*\*This experience concludes at City Hall Park **About Suzanne** Suzanne Reisman specializes in unique, unusual tours of New York City. If you want to delve into the New York City that's off the beaten (subway) track, she literally wrote the book about it — *Off the Beaten Subway Track: New York City's Best Unusual Attractions*. A proudly foul-mouthed flâneuse who loves exploring the city, Suzanne brings humor, curiosity, and 30+ years of lived experience in her adopted hometown to every tour. She is a NYC licensed tour guide, a graduate of the NYC Department of Health’s Rat Academy and the Sanitation Foundation’s Trash Academy, and a member of the NYC Rat Pack (New York’s elite squad of dedicated anti-rat activists). She holds an MFA in Creative Nonfiction from The New School, a Masters in Public Administration from Columbia University, and a BA from NYU. Suzanne currently lives in Manhattan with her husband, her teddy bear, and the ghost of her 13 lb. pet rabbit — and still insists on calling soda “pop” and sneakers “gym shoes.” Disclaimer Event takes place rain or shine. It is one of the largest and fastest growing ethnic Chinese enclaves outside of Asia. We will walk along 8 Ave's festive Lunar New Year decorations and bustling markets. On our way we will walk through some of our favorite parks: Sunset Park, Prospect Park, Highland Park, Forest Park and Flushing Meadows. Also, discover some lesser known neighborhoods, like East Flatbush and Brownsville Our walk will end in **Flushing Queens**, which has the largest Chinese population in the city and, in fact, outside of Asia. It also is a true American fusion where you can find everything from McDonalds to Chinese seafood restaurants and from Starbucks to bubble tea cafes. Those interested can join us after the walk at a food court where you can purchase food & drinks. Bring cash! Bring lunch (no purchase at lunch spot possible) and plenty of water.
