The surprising efficiency of recurrent reasoning models
The surprising efficiency of recurrent reasoning models
The MLAI Meetup is a community for AI researchers and professionals which hosts monthly talks on exciting research. Our format is: * 6:00 - 6:20: Socializing * 6:20 - 6:40: Announcements and AI news * 6:40 - 7:40: Talk(s) and Q&A * 7:40 - 8:00 Networking * 8:00: Head to the nearest pub for dinner **Long Dang & David Rawlinson: "The surprising efficiency of recurrent reasoning models"** **Abstract:** Large Language models (LLMs) still struggle with reasoning problems, defined as devising and executing complex, goal-oriented action sequences. Current solutions, such as Chain-of-Thought (CoT) and Test-Time Compute (TTC) techniques, can suffer from brittle task decomposition. In addition, auto-regressive output generation is prone to errors, which usually cannot be rectified. In 2025 the Hierarchical Reasoning Model (HRM) was introduced by Wang et al (1). On 3 reasoning problems (Extreme-Sudoku, Maze navigation, and ARC-AGI tasks) HRM demonstrated performance comparable to large, pre-trained LLMs with orders of magnitude fewer trainable parameters and no pre-training. HRM uses a process of repeated recurrent convergence between two modules to produce a latent representing a problem solution. Shortly after, Jolicoeur-Martineau released a pre-print (2) describing a thorough ablation of the ideas in HRM and her derivative model, known as the Tiny Recursive Model (TRM). TRM uses a similar recursive convergence process, even fewer parameters, and yet obtains 45% test-accuracy on ARC-AGI-1 and 8% on ARC-AGI-2, higher than most LLMs (e.g., Deepseek R1, o3-mini, Gemini 2.5 Pro) with less than 0.01% of the parameters. Finally, Dang and Rawlinson’s 2025 preprint explores HRM as a reinforcement learning Agent, allowing it to be applied to dynamic, uncertain or partially observable reasoning problems, or where the “correct” action is undefined (HRM and TRM use supervised learning). They demonstrate that computation from previous environment time-steps can be re-used during execution of a plan, crucial to efficiency and continuity of thought. **References:** 1- Hierarchical Reasoning Model by Guan Wang, Jin Li, Yuhao Sun, Xing Chen, Changling Liu, Yue Wu, Meng Lu, Sen Song, and Yasin Abbasi Yadkori (2025) [https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.21734](https://arxiv.org/abs/2506.21734) 2- Less is More: Recursive Reasoning with Tiny Networks by Alexia Jolicoeur-Martineau (2025) [https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.04871](https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.04871) **3- HRM-Agent: Training a recurrent reasoning model in dynamic environments using reinforcement learning** by Long H Dang and David Rawlinson (2025) [https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.22832](https://arxiv.org/abs/2510.22832) **Speaker bios:** **Long Dang** is currently working as Data Scientist in WSP after graduating with a Bachelor in Computer science from Monash University. He is interested in understanding how neural networks work and how we can do interesting things with them. His current hobbies are learning Japanese and watching youtube. **David Rawlinson** has worked in ML and AI R&D for over 25 years. He has a BSc in Computer Science and AI from Sussex University in the UK and a PhD in robotics & computer vision from Monash University in Melbourne. Currently, he works as a Principal Data Scientist for WSP, an engineering consulting company. He also maintains Causal Wizard ( [https://causalwizard.app](https://causalwizard.app/) ) a ML software application to help people apply causal inference to their data.

How is it that you can Help kids or yourself to become a better student!
How is it that you can Help kids or yourself to become a better student!
Too many kids as well as teenagers and adults have problems with study. Today's meetup will inform you about the basics in STUDY TECHNOLOGY that provides an understanding of the basics of learning and supplies exact ways to overcome all the pitfalls one can encounter during study. This is applicable to young children, teenagers (or their parents that are trying to help them) and adults alike. Study Technology shows how one studies in order to comprehend a subject so one can apply it. Laws on which learning is based and workable methods have also been discovered for anyone to apply for themselves or when teaching others. Too many students graduate from school and college unable to put to use what they’ve learned in school. It’s not that they’re stupid or that their teachers didn’t know how to teach. More than likely it traces back to the one thing missing from most educations—learning how to learn in the first place. We all went to school, yet isn’t it odd that no one taught us how to study? The information presented at this meetup can help anyone improve others or his own ability to learn. It is a practical tool that parents and teachers alike can use to enhance a child's study performance. You’ll learn the barriers that lie between your own or a child's education. And you will very quickly learn how to overcome them. This technology will enable you or a child to pursue any subject with skill and confidence. Teachers who have "hard to handle/distributive " or slow learners in class will absolutely love the amazing turn around most often seen in improved behaviour and student performance in class. If you or your child has difficulties at school (or learning new things at work or online) than this meetup is important to you. If you can not make it to our meetup than contact the organizer and arrange it to suit your time. This technology can if one was to live far away be taught online. (extension course) You may offcourse also opt to have this technology taught to your own child by experienced volunteeer staff or learn about this yourself and transfer this knowledge to those you want to have better grades. Yes it is possible to improve anyone's study performance. All it takes is just 5 steps. See you at this meetup. Pam

Build a Large Language Model from Scratch
Join us for another session of our study group as we dive into the fascinating world of Large Language Models (LLMs) using the book **Build a Large Language Model from Scratch** from Manning. In this session, we will finish **Chapter 7: Fine-tuning to follow instructions**. In the last session, we talked about how to prepare the dataset for instruction fine-tuning and in this session we will perform the fine-tuning and evaluate the model afterwards. This isn't just a lecture! Come ready to ask questions, share insights, and code along. Whether you're a beginner or have some experience, this is the perfect opportunity to build a strong foundation together. If you plan to work with the code on your own laptop during the session, try and set-up the environment ahead of time (https://github.com/rasbt/LLMs-from-scratch/tree/main/setup). We will be meeting at the North County Governmental Center this time that is across from the Reston public library.

Learn & Play Go-Stop, a Korean Card Game
Learn & Play Go-Stop, a Korean Card Game
**FOR BEGINNERS** If you've ever seen Korean movies or K-dramas, you may have seen some characters play with small red cards decorated with flowers and animals. Those cards are called "hwatu" or flower cards. The most popular game played with hwatu is "Go-Stop". Come to the inaugural meeting of Hwatu Hangout, and learn how to play this awesome game. It can take some time to orient yourself with the cards and rules, but once you do, there's no turning back. It's major fun. **FOR EXPERIENCED PLAYERS** No Tazza-style deck rigging or hand chopping. Most importantly, no gambling. We may play with plastic chips to raise the faux stakes, but that's it! If you'd like to skip the lesson/demo, then please arrive at 2p for game play. **THE PLAN** **1:00p - 1:30p**: Learn how to play **1:30p - 2:00p**: Demo Game **2:00p - 4:00p**: Game play Before attending, please complete [this interest form](https://forms.gle/BNyZuZSZBzmDKQNA7). I will bring some hwatu decks, but please bring a deck if you have one. Questions? Send an email to hwatuhangout (at) gmail (dot) com Hope to see you there! Eunice
