Sunset Boulevard, on Saturday 17.1 @20:00 at Kino SvÄtozor
Hi everyone!
Please join us on Saturday, **January 17th**, for a screening of **[Sunset Boulevard](https://www.kinosvetozor.cz/en?cinema=3&hall=1%2C2%2C3%2C24&sort=sort-by-data&projection=43502)** at **Kino SvÄtozor**. The movie begins at **20:30**. Iâll be at the Kino SvÄtozor bar from 8 pm; please look for me (wearing a beige coat) for a drink and a chat before the screening.
The movie, a noir directed by Billy Wilder, was released in 1950 and follows ââŠNorma Desmond, a silent film star-turned-delusional recluse. A tragic downward spiral is triggered by the arrival of Joe, a handsome down-on-his-luck writer, who is imbued with just enough curiosity and self-loathing to be lured into Normaâs world. Melding gothic decadence with noir cool, razor-sharp satire with twisted romance, Wilderâs film is as ruthlessly ambitious as its protagonists.â (See [here](https://www.lighthousecinema.ie/film/sunset-boulevard-75th-anniversary-4k-restoration).)
If youâd like to join us, please **purchase your own ticket [here](https://www.kinosvetozor.cz/en?cinema=3&hall=1%2C2%2C3%2C24&sort=sort-by-data&projection=43502)**. I have seat 13, row 8.
Kind request: if you register to attend but are unable to join, please change your RSVP accordingly.
Hope to see you there!

Dialogues #30 - Topic: Death As Community
In a world full of opinions, noise, and quick reactions, we often miss spaces for real dialogue â for slowing down, listening, and connecting with one another. This evening is an invitation to do exactly that.
Join us for an open and friendly evening (in English & free of charge) dedicated to Death As Community, where we will brainstorm together in an Open Spaceâstyle format, where participants choose topics themselves, and what we want to discuss from this broad topic - questions to help you get inspired:
How do we deal with death?
Can death or the thought of it us bring together?
A paralysing feeling or a push toward evolution?
Afterwards, participants will form small groups to explore the questions like
18:00 â Doors open
18:15 â Introduction & topic selection
18:40 - We start discussions
19:40 - Closing session (sharing activities)
20:00 - Networking & Connect
What to expect:
A welcoming space for newcomers and regulars alike
Be slightly pushed to socialise
Open, participant-led small-group discussions on diverse perspectives
No expertise required â everyoneâs opinion matters!
Safe, respectful, and judgment-free conversations
More about sharing and reflecting than debating or convincing
No pressure to speak â listening is just as valuable
Not a lecture, not a debate club, and definitely not intimidating!
Feel free to bring some snacks to share!
Friendly dogs are welcome!
If you are a regular that appreciate us and can help, or a newcomer who enjoyed the evening, and wants to help, we have recently set a patreon page where you can support us!

Veganuary VSDC Movie Watch Party, Discussion, and Vegan Food
Join the [Veg Society of DC (VSDC)](vsdc.org) for Veganuary's pro-animal/vegan-themed Movie Watch Party on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00 pm in Fairfax VA. Socializing with vegan food beforehand and discussion about the movie afterwards is planned. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION FOR DETAILS OF HOW THIS MONTH'S MOVIE WATCH PARTY WILL BE DIFFERENT, INCLUDING A 3 PM START TIME.
This month's movie is Wicked Part 1. (The next Movie Watch Party will screen Wicked Part II, which should be available on streaming by then). *Wicked* has a strong animal rights theme, portraying Elphaba's fight against the oppression and silencing of talking animals in Oz, mirroring real-world animal exploitation and systemic injustice. The movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long.
*About Veganuary: "Our vision is simple; we want a vegan world. A world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction." Veganuary has inspired and supported millions of people to try vegan since 2014 â with participants from almost every country in the world. They have worked with businesses to drive up vegan options in shops and restaurants, and have made veganism more visible and accessible through their work with national and international media.*
The VSDC member hostsâ home in Fairfax has a small home theater that can accommodate around 20 people. This regular event is a fun way to learn, discuss, and meet vegans and vegan-curious people (Thanks to Mindy Kursban and David Kwiatkowski for hosting!).
FEE: The $10 fee will cover the hosts' expenses for the event, including food, beverages, and other associated costs. If there are any proceeds beyond these costs, which we don't expect, they will go towards VSDC's work to fulfill its mission. In order to ensure the success of the evening and limit late cancellations, **the fee is refundable until 5 days before the event.**
BECAUSE THERE IS A FEE FOR THIS EVENT, MEETUP DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A WAITLIST ONCE THE RSVPs ARE FULL. IF IT IS FULL, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CHECK MEETUP OCCASIONALLY TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS CHANGED THEIR RSVP.
FOOD: For our afternoon movie watch party, weâll have mostly snack-style foods. And to kick off the year on a healthy note, this monthâs spread will be mostlyâthough not entirelyâraw. Feel free to bring any vegan food or beverages to share; your contribution doesnât need to be raw.
WHO: All VSDC and Meetup members are invited. Bringing a non-vegan friend is encouraged.
WHEN: Saturday, January 31 **at 3:00 pm**\*\*\*. Because of the length of the movie, we will start the movie at 3:00 pm and watch the first 1 1/2 hours. Then we will have a short break for food and socializing and watch the remainder of the movie.
WHERE: The home is in Fairfax VA 22033, near Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. It is 8 miles from the closest metro at either Vienna or Reston (Uber or Lyft would be necessary). **For safety and security reasons, the exact location will be emailed privately via Meetup about 2 days in advance to those who have rsvp'd Yes.** Please make sure your email is current in Meetup, your Meetup settings allow organizer messages, and check your spam if you don't receive the message.
PARKING: There is plenty of free parking within a 3-minute walk of the home.
\*You must register via this page to attend the event.\* A Pay Pal account is required to pay the $10. Because there is a cost for the event, Meetup doesn't have a waitlist for the movie.

NOVA Horror Club Discussion: Cloverfield (2008)
**NOTE: This is NOT a screening, please watch the movies before the discussion.**
*"Approximately seven hours ago, some... thing attacked the city. I don't know what it is. If you found this tape, I mean if you're watching this right now, then you probably know more about it than I do."*
Matt Reevesâ *Cloverfield* captures the feeling of a city realizing, in real time, that it is no longer safe. Framed through a handheld camera passed between friends, the film documents a single night in New York City as celebration gives way to sirens, collapsing streets, and an overwhelming sense of disorientation.
Released in the shadow of 9/11, *Cloverfield* channels a specific kind of urban dread â the fear of sudden catastrophe, incomplete information, and the helplessness of watching familiar landmarks fall apart. By restricting the audience to fragments and firsthand panic, the film turns spectacle into anxiety, forcing us to experience disaster the way the characters do: confused, trapped, and desperate for answers that never fully arrive.

Movie Discussion: Groundhog Day
**To confirm attendance, please also register on Luma: [https://luma.com/fwvre5x3](https://luma.com/fwvre5x3)**
Let's discuss this classic movie Groundhog Day on the day before the Groundhog Day of 2026.
**Please watch this movie before joining the discussion:**
[https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0107048/)
If more than 6 people join the discussion, we will break out into smaller groups. **(max 6 people per group)**
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
1. **Phil's character changed through accumulated daily choices over time. How do our repeated small decisions shape who we ultimately become?**
2. **Phil's pursuit of pleasure without consequence left him feeling empty. Why might selfish gratification fail to provide lasting fulfillment?**
3. **Phil's lowest moments became the catalyst for his genuine transformation. How can a crisis serve as a turning point toward growth?**
4. **Phil found meaning through learning skills like piano and ice sculpting. What makes skill-building fulfilling even when external rewards are absent?**
5. **Phil's calculated attempts to win Rita failed until he became genuinely good. What distinguishes authentic connection from performed affection?**
6. **Phil transformed by memorizing the town's needs and serving others daily. How do small acts of service shape both individuals and communities?**
\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-\-
To provide an enjoyable experience for fellow participants, here are three ground rules during discussion events:
1. Step up and step back. (If you feel that youâve been talking too much, step back to listen more. If you feel that youâve been relatively quiet, step up to share your perspective or ask a question)
2. Listen to understand, not to respond.
3. Be open-minded and value differences.
