HARD WOOD TREASURE BOX
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hard-wood-treasure-box-12/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/hard-wood-treasure-box-12/)
**⋆⋆⋆**
This is a content rich three-day course in a very small class size which includes:
* **Supervised use of woodwork machinery**. **(surface planer thicknesser, panel saw, table router, hand router and bandsaw.)**
* **Learning how to use jigs and rods**.
* **Solid wood carcass construction.**
From a technical drawing and a length of timber to the final sanding of the completed box, expert furniture maker and tutor, Marcin Waszak will guide each learner through all the steps needed to create this hardwood treasure box. The box measures 330mm x 304mm x 180mm and can be used to store lots of special things and perhaps become an heirloom!
The beautiful hardwood and veneers used for this project has been sourced and prepared from a sustainable woodyard. The course begins by explaining how to stay safe while using our professional and powerful woodworking machines. Marcin will talk you through the materials and tools you will be using and let you practice before beginning the project. We have created a cutting list so that each person can learn how to process the wood and begin making very quickly.
If you hanker to use some big machines and learn how to use jigs and to work accurately from plans, this is a great course for you.
**Steps to making your own Treasure Box:**
1. Student introductions, inspirations and knowledge.
2. Introduction to the project.
3. Health and Safety.
4. Understanding the materials and tools we will be using in this course (wood technology, proper usage of the tools, jigs).
5. Practice on how to use the tools and jigs in the workshop.
6. Cutting list.
7. Making.
Each student will be provided with a printed technical drawing
Marcin says:
‘I will approach the sessions with a solid introduction not only to Health and Safety but to give an understanding of materials and tools. I believe it’s important to understand the nature of different types of wood and how it reacts (i.e. depending on variety, cut or thickness) when handling it, glueing or using different tools. There will be a great focus on how to use tools and machinery in the correct way for best results.
We will be starting from technical drawing explanation and introduction to the material and the design itself. I will love to know people’s backgrounds before we start the session so everyone will feel more comfortable and confident to work as a team.
I will have prepared a cutting list to make things easier and so we can start making (and having fun) as soon as possible.
I would like to make the sessions inclusive and provide a safe space for everyone. I always take people’s abilities into account and endeavour to be there for students that want to share their struggles in order to make the making experience something they can enjoy.’

**Details:**
An absorbing five-week course for confident beginners and an enjoyable learning experience for anyone with a little woodworking experience. Using a fusion of hardwood and softwood, this five-week course will teach you the fundamentals of woodwork and give you an opportunity to use classic hand tools; brass-backed tenon saws, sharp wood chisels and delicately honed vintage wood planes.

The project will familiarise learners with many classic woodwork techniques and is taught with patience and enthusiasm by Andy Nicholl, who has devised this informative and challenging project.
You will take home a treasure to treasure- and we hope it will enthuse you to learn how to make many handmade woodwork projects in the years to come.

**Key skills:**
* Measuring marking and cutting dovetail joints to make an accurate framed box.
* Planing and shaping a hardwood lid to fit the softwood frame base.

First meeting of London "What do we want as a Sustainable Planet?"
The world is in crisis and many people think we've gone past the tipping point and the planet is doomed.
However, there are those who have hope and faith in science that some can survive the polycrisis and get to live in a sustainable society and planet.
But there's a problem... **There's no clear vision of what a sustainable society and planet should be**, and without that destination, how can we set out on the journey to get there?
Please join like-minded people to discuss this. We'll agree an agenda at the start of the meeting.
Bring an open mind, suggestions and perhaps a pad of paper.
**Here are some topics to be covered.**
Please use the comments/chat to suggest other areas for consideration
*Depending on the mood of attendees, the frequency of further meetups can be agreed.*
**WHAT DO WE WANT A SUSTAINABLE SOCIETY AND PLANET TO LOOK AND FEEL LIKE?**

· A safe justice system for all
· Societies which respect for the diversity of opinion, ethnicity, sexuality, religion
· Respect for the natural resources and fragility of Planet Earth and their finite capacity
· Societies where the more fortunate, stronger and healthier help those less strong, less fortunate or less healthy.
· Peaceful co-existence between the varying communities of the planet
**What Freedoms ?**
· Freedom to travel anywhere
· Freedom to worship (should there be limitation such as worship should not be based on destroying the existing system…??)

UPHOLSTERY – BRING YOUR OWN CHAIR – MONDAY EVENINGS
**Bookable via our website ➡️** [https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/upholstery-bring-your-own-chair-monday-eve-16/](https://www.thegoodlifecentre.co.uk/events/upholstery-bring-your-own-chair-monday-eve-16/)
**⋆⋆⋆**
KEY PROJECT: RE-UPHOLSTERING YOUR OWN CHAIR.
Suitable for beginners and fun for advanced learners.
This workshop is led by Krasmira Nikolova, an experienced upholsterer.
We provide the use of all upholstery tools and equipment including compressed air staple guns. Basic upholstery materials that you require for your project will be moderately charged on a pay-as-you-use basis and will be dependent on each chair’s requirements. We can advise you on the purchase of your top fabric and we have a lovely library of fabric samples to help make up your mind. The Goodlife Centre sells all the basic tools and materials for use on projects worked on at home.
This is a fantastic chance to up-cycle and personalise a family piece you have at home or a junk shop find and a great way to immerse yourself into the wonderful world of upholstery.
The course is suitable for both beginners and those who have a basic knowledge but little experience who wish to extend their expertise.
**Choosing a suitable chair**
If you are a newcomer to upholstery, there are a couple of pointers to help you choose a chair to work on. Choose something that has one or two flat planes – a seat and a back – as curves and arms are more complex and take longer to achieve.
The chair on the right was completed in about 12 weeks.
If you are a complete beginner, you could bring something more simple such as an upholstered footstool. More experienced upholsters can bring more complex pieces. Your chair can be traditionally built or modern, but be aware that some modern pieces have been constructed using machinery and are difficult to recreate by hand.
[Click here for a detailed PDF of suitable chairs.](https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B2r8UvbQtaH5RTVKUjlBdkhDX3c/view?usp=sharing)
**Please email info@thegoodlifecentre.co.uk with a photo of your chair prior to the course so we can answer any suitability questions and advise if your chair is suitable**.
We have very limited storage at the centre, so we can only store smaller pieces during the course. Please make sure the total dimensions are less than 1000mm high by 750mm wide, with a depth of 750mm.
Available on Monday evenings from 6:30pm to 9pm.
The use of tools and machinery is included.
All materials will be charged at nominal rates. Some materials will not be kept in stock but can be ordered. Approved projects can be stored at the centre. We cannot offer additional time to work on your project outside of workshop times.

The Web Sustainability Guidelines
Happy New Year, Green Software Practitioners! Green Software Brighton are back for our first event of 2026 with an excellent talk from Alexander Dawson all about the Web Sustainability Guidelines.
Do you work in Web?
Are you concerned about how to minimise the environmental impacts of the sites you create?
Do you wish there were guidelines so you don't have to start from scratch?
Then this talk is for you! Alex has been integral to creating these guidelines within the W3C, the body which has produced similar standards such as the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) which are now internationally recognised.
The guidelines are broken down into different areas covering UX, web development, hosting & infrastructure and strategy & product management, so they cover many roles in the website creation lifecycle.
Check out the Green Software Brighton [website](https://greensoftwarebrighton.co.uk/) for links to previous talks.
Arrive from 18:00 for pizza and drinks. Event will start at 18:30. We always head for a drink and a chat locally afterwards too.

Amphibian and Reptile Monitoring 2026 Season Kickoff
Our local amphibians and reptiles are both susceptible to habitat destruction and pollutants and can often be victims of being misunderstood. Join Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy for an introductory look at our local amphibians and reptiles, what our citizens can do to help protect their habitats, and what related programs are available through Loudoun Wildlife to help monitor populations and increase community awareness of these often overlooked and fragile species. This presentation takes place at Rust Library and is co-sponsored by the Loudoun County Public Library and Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy.
Hall of Heroes-Central Division
A new outpost of the Hall of Heroes has been established in Cormyr at the request of Aurus, the Great Gold Wyrm, protector of these lands. The outpost's purpose: to combat the growing influence of forces bent on chaos and conquest in the Central Heartlands area. Rumor has it the Zhentarim are involved, along with other as yet unidentified antagonists. Recent activities in the area indicate that this is more than a rumor. Journey to these mythical lands and help the Hall of Heroes thwart their efforts, and maybe find an interesting trinket or two along the way!
***At our first session***: After speaking to Xeraxius, the dragonborn Liasson to the new outpost for Aurus the Golden Great Wyrm, the party made their way to the future home of the Hall of Heroes outpost, Delphi Manor. Encountering the ghost of Elra at the edge of the property, they were warned of the horrors they might encounter at the manor, and the strange energy surges occurring in the mansion.
Arriving at the eerily quiet manor, the party decided to start on the ground floor, waltzing in through the front door. After a brief discussion, it was decided that they would go from room to room, seeking their target, Marcus Delphi, and the book he stole from his father's library: the *Celestial Codex*. They encountered one of the mysterious surges in a spare bedroom near the tower stairs. Hammy had a great time dancing with his shadow, sadly losing his new companion when he left the room, While clearing out the aberrant horrors on that floor, the party discovered the stairs leading up to the second floor, and the stairs leading to the basement. Next stop: the basement!

Hall of Heroes: DC20 Campaign
The party has defeated the cultists who followed them down the tunnel, but two of the four women they had rescued have been struck down. Can the party escape?
Reminder: We have transitioned to the DC20 Beta 0.10 rule set for this campaign.
We will be meeting in the mezzanine above the Gainesville Wegmans food court. Go to the far end of the mezzanine and look for a group of nerds with character sheets and dice.
Veganuary VSDC Movie Watch Party, Discussion, and Vegan Food
Join the [Veg Society of DC (VSDC)](vsdc.org) for Veganuary's pro-animal/vegan-themed Movie Watch Party on Saturday, January 31 at 3:00 pm in Fairfax VA. Socializing with vegan food beforehand and discussion about the movie afterwards is planned. PLEASE READ THE ENTIRE DESCRIPTION FOR DETAILS OF HOW THIS MONTH'S MOVIE WATCH PARTY WILL BE DIFFERENT, INCLUDING A 3 PM START TIME.
This month's movie is Wicked Part 1. (The next Movie Watch Party will screen Wicked Part II, which should be available on streaming by then). *Wicked* has a strong animal rights theme, portraying Elphaba's fight against the oppression and silencing of talking animals in Oz, mirroring real-world animal exploitation and systemic injustice. The movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes long.
*About Veganuary: "Our vision is simple; we want a vegan world. A world without animal farms and slaughterhouses. A world where food production does not decimate forests, pollute rivers and oceans, exacerbate climate change, and drive wild animal populations to extinction." Veganuary has inspired and supported millions of people to try vegan since 2014 – with participants from almost every country in the world. They have worked with businesses to drive up vegan options in shops and restaurants, and have made veganism more visible and accessible through their work with national and international media.*
The VSDC member hosts’ home in Fairfax has a small home theater that can accommodate around 20 people. This regular event is a fun way to learn, discuss, and meet vegans and vegan-curious people (Thanks to Mindy Kursban and David Kwiatkowski for hosting!).
FEE: The $10 fee will cover the hosts' expenses for the event, including food, beverages, and other associated costs. If there are any proceeds beyond these costs, which we don't expect, they will go towards VSDC's work to fulfill its mission. In order to ensure the success of the evening and limit late cancellations, **the fee is refundable until 5 days before the event.**
BECAUSE THERE IS A FEE FOR THIS EVENT, MEETUP DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A WAITLIST ONCE THE RSVPs ARE FULL. IF IT IS FULL, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CHECK MEETUP OCCASIONALLY TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS CHANGED THEIR RSVP.
FOOD: For our afternoon movie watch party, we’ll have mostly snack-style foods. And to kick off the year on a healthy note, this month’s spread will be mostly—though not entirely—raw. Feel free to bring any vegan food or beverages to share; your contribution doesn’t need to be raw.
WHO: All VSDC and Meetup members are invited. Bringing a non-vegan friend is encouraged.
WHEN: Saturday, January 31 **at 3:00 pm**\*\*\*. Because of the length of the movie, we will start the movie at 3:00 pm and watch the first 1 1/2 hours. Then we will have a short break for food and socializing and watch the remainder of the movie.
WHERE: The home is in Fairfax VA 22033, near Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. It is 8 miles from the closest metro at either Vienna or Reston (Uber or Lyft would be necessary). **For safety and security reasons, the exact location will be emailed privately via Meetup about 2 days in advance to those who have rsvp'd Yes.** Please make sure your email is current in Meetup, your Meetup settings allow organizer messages, and check your spam if you don't receive the message.
PARKING: There is plenty of free parking within a 3-minute walk of the home.
\*You must register via this page to attend the event.\* A Pay Pal account is required to pay the $10. Because there is a cost for the event, Meetup doesn't have a waitlist for the movie.
