**WHY GO?**
What better way to experience the Aurora Borealis aka Northern lights than in the city of northern lights, Alta. In Norwegian, Eventyr means both 'adventure' and 'fairy tale.' This is the perfect word to describe Alta, as it is a perfect place for active adventures in the mountains, forests and fjords that are reminiscent of fairy tale landscapes. The cold and long winters provide excellent conditions for dog sledding, skiing, snowmobiling, and other adventure activities. A modern city in Northern Norway surrounded by the arctic tundra and mountains, Alta is the ideal combination of natural and urban elements.
The celestial dance of lights, known as Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, is a phenomena as old as Earthâs atmosphere. The first record of Aurora Borealis is believed to be in a 30,000-year-old cave painting in France. Since then, cultures around the world have marveled at its magic, giving rise to many fascinating legends and folklore.
In Norway alone, symbols linked to the northern lights are found on the SĂĄmi shamanistic drum. They call it âGuovssahas,â i.e. âthe light that can be heard.â During the Viking Age, the northern lights were said to be the armor of the Valkyrie warrior virgins that shed a strange flickering light. Today, locals respectfully refer to the lights as âthe green lady.â

Fermented Histories: Koryo Saram Cuisine
Fermentation and Pickling as Culinary and Cultural Practice: Exploring Koryo Saram Cuisine and Intangible Heritage with Tobias Stefan (HU Berlin)
Join us for a Fermenta Collective workshop that delves into fermentation not only as a culinary technique, but also as a form of intangible cultural heritage. This session places a special focus on Koryo Saram cuisine - the food traditions of the Korean diaspora community in Central Asia, formed largely through the forced deportations of Koreans within the Soviet Union in 1937.
Koryo Saram foodways have evolved in unique ways, distinct from contemporary Korean cuisine on the peninsula. Through generations, communities adapted their culinary practices to Central Asian tastes, ingredients, and environments. Today, their dishes have become an integral part of the broader Central Asian culinary landscape.
In this workshop, we will explore these traditions through practice and conversation:
⢠Learn about the history and everyday cultural significance of Koryo Saram cuisine, with insights from Tobiasâ doctoral research in social and cultural anthropology focusing on Koryo Saram heritage in Uzbekistan
⢠Prepare morkovcha, the iconic Koryo Saram carrot salad - often referred to as Koryo Saram carrot kimchi
⢠Make our own chimchi, a Koryo Saram version of kimchi to take home
⢠Enjoy our dishes alongside staples of Central Asian cuisine
As someone with family roots in Central Asia, Tobias is looking forward to sharing not only techniques and recipes, but also the personal and historical stories that make Koryo Saram food a rich expression of intangible cultural heritage.

Whisking up a storm: Powdered tea from Nagasaki
# Whisking Up a Storm: Powdered Teas from Nagasaki
âCurious about the **powdered tea boom** beyond matcha? Join us for a **2-hour workshop** at C\*SPACE Berlin, exploring the teas of **Nagasaki** with **Marjolein Raijmakers from [Ikedoki Tea](https://ikedokitea.com/)**[.](https://ikedokitea.com/)
## *âTaste the Tradition*
âWeâll begin by tasting **classic leaf teas** from Nagasaki:
* â**Kamairicha** â the main traditional tea of the region until the early 1970s
* â**Tamaryokucha** â the current standard in Nagasaki tea regions
* â**WakĹcha** â showcasing innovation in tea processing over the last 10â15 years
âThese teas will give you a sense of the history, regional flavors, and craftsmanship behind Nagasaki teas.
## â*Enter the World of Powdered Teas*
âNext, we dive into **high-grade powdered teas**. Beyond matcha, weâll explore:
* âMatcha made in a **traditional tencha factory**
* â**Tamaryokucha powder** (funmatcha)
* â**HĹjicha powder**
âNagasaki is not traditionally a matcha-producing region â its first tencha factory was only built in 2018. Through tasting and discussion, weâll see how local tea producers are responding to **modern demand**, and how powdered teas are evolving from just a drink to a **food and flavor component**.
## *âWhy Join?*
âWhether youâre already familiar with Japanese tea or just curious about the **powdered tea trend**, this workshop offers a hands-on, immersive experience: **tasting, whisking, and storytelling** to understand how tradition meets innovation.
## *âAbout the Host:*
â**Marjolein Raijmakers** has lived in Nagasaki for 2.5 years and, together with Yasuharu Matsumoto (Matsu), runs **Ikedoki Tea** â a project combining tea tourism, education, and tea sales.
âTheir work focuses on:
* âPromoting **Nagasaki teas** and putting this somewhat hidden tea region on the map
* âExploring different tea producers and **uncovering hidden tea gems**
* âSharing a **peaceful world through Japanese tea**, while supporting tea farmers, producers, and local businesses

Radical Empathy â Queer Storytelling for Connection
**Radical Empathy â Queer Storytelling for Connection**
host by **Neo Seefried**
guest: **Sarj Lynch**
event for **LGBTQIA+**
**[Free event with registration](https://wearevillage.org/en/shop/radical-empathy/w07-2026)**
Conflict is everywhere: in our inner lives, relationships, workplaces, communities. Instead of seeing it as rupture or failure, Radical Empathy explores how exchange can transform conflict into queer creativity, resilience, and solidarity.
This intimate closed group of 25â30 queer participants will explore how storytelling can hold, transform, and reimagine conflict â personal and collective. We will create a space where queer voices meet â not to erase differences, but to live them and to seek new forms of connection.
**Calling in Care When Harm Happens**
In this session, weâll explore some of the ways that our bodies react in moments of rupture, as well as strategies for how we can activate our values to guide our responses when the going gets tough . Weâll learn a simple care protocol that can be applied when painful moments arise in our relationships â whether we are the one experiencing harm, perpetuating it, or witnessing it (or, as so often happens, some combination of the three).
**Guest facilitator for this session is Sarj Lynch**, facilitator, community care organizer and co-initiator of aequa. **Sarj Lynch** (they) is a very curious facilitator and community care organizer based in Berlin. They are co-initiator of aequa (2017), aequa Workshops Collective (2020), and Berlin Collective Action e.V. (2020). Together with Bryony Beynon, they run Big Beef and Beyond â an ongoing series of trainings on transformative approaches to tending to harm in our communities, which focuses especially on conflict, harm and abuse in collective, cultural and social movement and organizing work.
**General information**
**Participant**: this workshop series is open to LGBTQIA+ people, with particular encouragement for those holding multiple marginalizations.
**Language**: Depending on the groupâs needs, sessions will be held in German and/or English.
**Cost**: Free of charge, registration required.

Feminism: Power, Society, and Self
### The Question of Feminism: History, Politics, Society, and Psychology
Feminism addresses the historical and ongoing disadvantage of women in society. It begins with the recognition that women were long denied legal rights, political participation, economic independence, and control over their own bodies. From this starting point, feminism examines how inequality has been created and maintained through laws, institutions, social norms, knowledge production, and cultural practicesâand how these structures shape everyday life and womenâs internal experiences.
In this session, we will focus on the following topics:
1. **Historical exclusion of women from legal rights, education, political power, and economic independence**
2. **Political regulation of womenâs work, income, citizenship, and bodily autonomy**
3. **Social expectations surrounding motherhood, care work, and emotional labor**
4. **Psychological effects of gender norms, including self-confidence, ambition, guilt, and mental health**
5. **Social, medical, and political control of womenâs bodies and sexuality**
6. **Marginalization and underrepresentation of women in science, education, and cultural production**
7. **Differences in womenâs experiences shaped by class, race, migration background, disability, and age**
8. **Contemporary forms of discrimination against women in workplaces, healthcare, relationships, and public space**
This will be an open and focused conversation grounded in historical realities, political structures, social practices, psychological experience, and intersectional perspectives. Together, weâll reflect on how feminism connects material conditions, power relations, and inner livesâand why addressing all of these dimensions is essential for understanding and challenging womenâs inequality today.

Korean/English Language Exchange
ěë
íě¸ě ěŹë ¤ëś! Welcome to our Meetup series for Korean/English Language Exchange. These meetups will be intended for serious language learners who are at least at a conversational level in the language they wish to practice. We'll have a variety of activities targeted at fostering some significant practice time and perhaps have a little bit of cultural exchange along the way.
For this Meetup, we ask that you make a decision with your RSVP by 10 AM the day of the meetup, so as to give others a chance to attend if you can't make it.
For this session: We're returning to a favorite food hall of ours in H Mart in Fairfax!
For the first half hour or so, as people gather and find food/seats, talk freely to each other and try to introduce yourself with everyone in the language you're practicing or catch up if you with friends you know!
Once everyone gets settled into groups, take turns at the table allowing everyone to answer the following prompts:
**Prompt #1:** TBD
**Prompt #2**: TBD
After the activity above, feel free to continue practicing in conversation as you wish, but if so inclined, try one of the activities below:
A.) Two truths and a lie about (fill in the blank)......decide as a group on a topic for group play and have each person take turns giving two true statements and one false statement in any order and allow others to guess which statement is false
B.) Word association......start by naming a common word and go around the table as long as you can with each person giving a word (in the language that you're practicing) that is COMMONLY associated with the previous word given. If the group calls you out, be ready to defend your answer.
C.) Story time.......start off telling the first sentence of a story and go around the table letting each person add a line to the story until you reach the end...or a breaking point.
D.) Ditto.......Each player will need to be able to write on paper or an electronic device for this one. Have one person pick a category of common nouns (ex. vegetables, sports equipment, things you see at the circus, etc.) and have another person pick a starting consonant (or vowel, if playing in English). Allow two minutes for everyone to write down as many nouns that both fit the selected category and start with the selected consonant/vowel. When two minutes are up, compare and contrast your answers. Whoever has the most matches wins. For further challenge, try playing the inverse way to achieve unique answers rather than matches.
Another adventure may break out afterwards if the group is so inclined.

African American Artists & Performers in the Nordic Countries/Language Practice
In recognition of Black History Month, the Nordic Culture and Language Exchange Meetup group will explore some of the African American artists, actors, singers, and musicians who lived, worked, and performed in the Nordic countries during the 20th century, particularly in the 1930s-1960s. Please join us to learn about performers like soprano Anne Wiggins Brown, who was the first Bess in George Gershwinâs âPorgy and Bessâ on Broadway and who later moved to Norway and had a career there (including being a voice teacher for Liv Ulmann) and Earle Hyman, who performed in many of Shakespeareâs plays in Norway (in Norwegian!). Many African American jazz musicians performed and made their homes in Denmark (some are buried in Copenhagen) such as trumpet player Thad Jones, drummer Ed Thigpen, pianist Kenny Drew, and saxophonist Dexter Jordan. Ella Fitzgerald bought a home in Denmark, performed many concerts there, and was reported to have married her producer, a Norwegian. Artist William H. Johnson spent much of the 1930s in Scandinavia- over a thousand of his paintings are in the collection at the Smithsonian American Art Museum.
During the second hour, we will split up into smaller groups to practice Norwegian, Danish, Swedish, Finnish and Icelandic.

Casual Dining Out: Yanzi Noodle House
Welcome to Casual Dining Out, the event series where we explore counterserve establishments, food halls, and other venues for quick bites of Asian, "fusion", and other fare! As in the past, the field for these events will typically be limited, so please RSVP quickly if you know you're coming (or drop out quickly if you can't make it to give others a chance). RSVPs will close at 4 PM the day of the event and anyone who drops afterwards may be subject to the dreaded "no show" designation.
This edition: a unique place that serves Liuzhou-style luosifen (river snail soup) and other Chinese/Taiwanese delicacies.

As always, a bonus activity could follow if the mood is right.

BreadBreakers Game Night
**Join the BreadBreakers community for an evening of connection and comradery over the timeless art of boardgaming!**
BreadBreakers is a community where people of all different belief systems and backgrounds create community and have meaningful conversation. Usually we do that over the dinner table, but sometimes you've got to change it up a bit!
Here's what to expect:
* A kind, welcoming atmosphere and community
* Several familiar, and several novel boardgames.
* Snacks :)
* We'll be gathering in Meeting Room 1 at the Reston Regional Library.
* Feel free to bring a board game to share if you'd like!
**I've never attended a BreadBreakers event before - what is BreadBreakers?**
BreadBreakers is a community where neighbors from all different beliefs and backgrounds can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** Most frequently, we do this through the ancient practice of breaking bread around a common dining table.
But we're more than just a discussion group - we're a movement to heal our world's broken discourse and forge togetherness in a time of isolation and loneliness. **Through the sacred act of just "being" together, we're working to rebuild the town square, one table (or game night) at a time.**
BreadBreakers is a religiously inclusive by Restoration United Methodist Church in Reston, VA. All faiths, beliefs, and stripes are welcomed, and our leadership and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
