Optimizing EV Charging Stations: A Live Code-Along in Zerve
**Welcome to DSF Sandbox Sessions!**
Top tech talks and masterclasses from the best in the industry. Every month, and completely free. The catch? There isn’t one. Just a monthly dose of epic content to power up your data passion!
**Event details**
📆 **Date:** Tuesday 13th January 2026
⏰ **Time:** 2:00 – 4:00 PM GMT / 09:00 – 11:00 AM EST.
💡 **Topic:** Optimizing EV Charging Stations: A Live Code-Along in Zerve
🗣️ **Speakers:** Greg Michaelson and Jason Hillary
Join Greg Michaelson and Jason Hillary for a fully interactive, hands-on code-along where you’ll build an end-to-end optimization project from scratch using Zerve’s new notebook view. You’ll write code with us step by step, ask questions as you go, and learn how to model a synthetic city, generate EV charging demand, define an optimization objective, and use heuristic search to place charging stations efficiently.
This session is designed for active participation: follow along, experiment, and get real-time guidance from two experienced PhD data scientists. Everyone who attends gets **free Zerve credits** so you can continue exploring and applying these techniques long after the workshop.
**Key takeaways from attending this event:**
* How to translate a real-world planning problem into an optimization objective (for example, constructing a weighted distance function and defining constraints like service radius.)
* How to implement and iterate on heuristic optimization methods (such as k-medoids–style search) to improve facility placement without relying on packaged solvers.
* How to build and visualize an end-to-end optimization workflow in Zerve, including generating synthetic spatial data, evaluating solutions, and comparing baseline vs optimized layouts.
Please sign up for Zerve at **[https://www.zerve.ai/?utm_source=dsf-jan26](https://www.zerve.ai/?utm_source=dsf-jan26)** as this is the platform we’ll be using during the code-along. We’ll provide you with additional free credits at the session.

Tuesday Open House
TOG will be open on Tuesday evenings from 19:00 to 21:30 for a general Open House event. Expect to find members and visitors in the space up to all sorts of activities. It's a great time to drop in and see what the space is about. If you're an artist, tinkerer, maker or just plain curious, come in and see what the space is about.
Maybe you already have something to work on (or want to), have something to fix, create, design, bodge or tinker... drop in. We're also open for just for plain old social chat and hang out, with plenty of tea, coffee and biscuits. We have lots of free parking right outside our door.

Who’s Got the Cash?!
Get ready to test your luck and skills at Who’s Got the Cash?! - a thrilling event where big money is up for grabs!
👀💸 Who’s Got the Cash?!
**The live social game of chaos, strategy & real cash**
One person is secretly holding the money…
Everyone else? You’re hunting them.
**Compete. Bluff. Sabotage. Deduce.**
Spot the cash holder and split the prize — miss them and they walk away rich.
Singles, couples, friends, or solo players — everyone can play.
## 🎭 How It Works
### 1️⃣ Hidden Cash
* One player starts with the cash.
* **Goal:** keep it without getting caught.
* They have **secret tasks** (like hugging 2 people or sneaky challenges) to keep the money — but every move makes them suspicious.
### 2️⃣ Hunters
* Everyone else is trying to find the holder.
* **Actions:** observe, misdirect, bluff, accuse.
* **Vote at key moments:**
* ✅ Right → 💥 cash moves to someone else
* ❌ Wrong → 💸 tension rises, cash stays put
### 3️⃣ Team Games
While the chaos unfolds, play **mini-games** like:
* Word or card games
* Puzzles & brain challenges
* Light social/physical tasks
These games keep energy high, encourage interaction, and give the cash holder cover to complete secret tasks.
### 4️⃣ Endgame
* Spot the final cash holder → **group splits the prize**
* Miss them → **they take it all**
**Simple rules. Endless chaos. Maximum fun.**
## ⚡ Why You’ll Love It
* No prep, no acting, no awkward icebreakers
* High-energy, hilarious, interactive
* Mix of social, puzzle & light physical challenges
* Meet new people without the pressure
## ⏱ Event Info
* **Duration:** \~4 hours
* **Players:** 12–15
* **Prize:** Real cash (revealed on the night)

Sunday boardgame meetup
Our free-of-charge meet-up in the Black Sheep Pub on Capel Street.
This is a casual meet up for people who want to play boardgames. Lots of people bring plenty of games and rules will always be explained so don't worry if you're new to the hobby and you don't have anything to bring along or think you won't know how to play.
The meet-up runs for the whole day but late comers always welcome, you just may have to wait a little for a game to open up but games will be starting and ending throughout the day.
**IMPORTANT!**
**The meet up is free of charge but we do ask that people support the bar by buying food and/or drink. The bar is very accommodating to us and it's important that we support them in return. Bringing in outside food or drink is completely unacceptable.**
Check out the comments below where people will say what games they are bringing and express your interest in joining if interested.
Any questions contact either of the organisers Gavin or Stephen.
Board Game Meet Up in Celbridge!
A weekly board game meet up in "Mc Mahon’s Bar and Eatery" which is a pub. We get our own section, it's wheelchair friendly and parking is free! 🙂
Whether you are new or a veteran player you are all are welcome!
General guidelines are:
1. Avoid handing drinks to people OVER a game.
2. We cannot take responsibility in the event of theft so keep your valuables close to you.
3. Strictly over 18+ only.
The "rules" would be:
1. Be respectful to each other.
2. Don't be a creep.
3. Be patient to players of all skill levels.
Failure to be a decent human being\* will jeopardise your participation in future events.
The pub owner is really nice and are letting us use the space so if you can - please buy a tea, coffee or a drink on the night to support them if you can but don't feel obligated to do so.
They also do food so you won't go hungry!
The event starts at 7 PM and everyone is free to play until 11 PM where we'll wrap it up for the cleaners.
Feel free to bring your games, join in on a game if there's space or organise a game here for the upcoming event to get participants. We advertise the games we want to play ahead of time on our discord server, so feel free to check it out. https://discord.gg/xW8WryXmKu
If you get lost or have any questions feel free to message me on WhatsApp at 0858405446.
Just a note for those coming by car from Dublin:
1. I highly recommend using the motorway then driving into the pub. There's a slightly faster way with the back roads but unless you are from the area its not worth the 2 minutes saved since it's barely lit and the bends are somewhat hazardous.
2. Traffic from 5 - 6:30 is horrendous but the roads are clear enough after this time.
Let’s play... How Giant Fighting Robots Find Love
Join us every Sunday and tell a story as a group by playing a beginner-friendly roleplaying game. Every week we have 2-3 different games. All materials provided and rules are explained at the start of each game, you just need to bring your imagination.
***
Details for the event (number of groups and games) will be published here or earlier on our [Discord server](https://tinyurl.com/indie-rpgs-dublin). Feel free to ask the organisers any questions you have (here or on Discord).

Writing In The Speculative Genre
My name is MJ Huntsgood, and I am a speculative horror author with award-nominated speculative fiction published in literary magazines, anthologies, and across the internet. I've taught classes online, at conventions, and in other venues. I'd love to bring my knowledge to the community.
In this one-hour workshop, we’ll explore how to use speculative elements (science fiction, fantasy, horror, slipstream, dystopian, surreal) as tools for storytelling rather than decoration. The focus is on clarity, emotional stakes, and ideas that actually sustain a narrative.
This session blends short craft discussion with guided writing exercises, so you’ll leave with new material on the page, not just notes.
**In this workshop, you’ll:**
* Learn a simple framework for generating speculative premises from personal, social, or philosophical questions
* Explore how to ground speculative concepts in character and emotion
* Draft a short piece or opening scene using a focused speculative constraint
* Get tools you can reuse for future stories, regardless of subgenre
**This workshop is for:**
* Writers interested in speculative fiction (SF, fantasy, hybrid, literary speculative)
* Writers who want their work to feel meaningful, not gimmicky
* Writers comfortable doing short writing exercises
You don’t need to be published, but some prior writing experience is helpful. This is not a critique workshop.
**Format:** 1.5 hours
**Includes:** Craft guidance, writing exercises, and optional sharing
**Bring:** Something to write with and a willingness to experiment (a limited number of pens and notebooks will be available)
Starfinder 2: #1-11: Friends of the Forest [Lv 1-2]
Join us at **Hashtag** on **Thurs., Jan. 15th at 6pm**. Adventure and roll dice with this week's **Starfinder** **GM: Maria**!
**The Game:**
[Starfinder](https://paizo.com/starfindersociety) 2e is a role-playing game similar to Pathfinder 2e (or Dungeons & Dragons) but with magic *and* technology. In this one-shot, you can jump in easily as a new player or join if you're more experienced.
\*\*\*
**The story:**
First Seeker Sarmak has called on scientist Dr. Heldin Sevaille to create an inoculation for the mysterious “conversion” which is transforming wildlife and people on Akiton. The final ingredient she requires is in a remote forest on Marata, one of Bretheda’s moons. A team of Starfinders is needed to collect samples of this rare plant with a few local scientists. But trouble is brewing… the Frozen Trove, a notorious biotech corporation, is also on Marata and is putting the entire ecosystem at risk.
**Notes**: Replayable (with a different character), this IS a metaplot adventure (but is more like a side quest related to it).
\*\*\*\*
**The Characters:**
You can use an [level 1 pregenerated character](https://paizo.com/starfinder) *or* make your [own character](https://paizo.com/starfindersociety/characteroptions) using the Starfinder 2e rules. Let me know ahead of time if you need me to bring copies of the pregen character sheets (recommended for new players). This is a level 1-2 adventure, so if you're been playing Starfinder, you can bring a character in that range.
-Some options for character building are [Starbuilder 2e](https://pathbuilder2e.com/app.html?v=102b) (made by the maker of Pathbuilder!), [Hephaistos](https://sf2e.hephaistos.online/), [Demiplane](https://app.demiplane.com/characters), using the Starfinder Player Core and pen/[paper](https://downloads.paizo.com/RemasterPlayerCoreCharacterSheet.pdf#), etc. You can use character options from the [Invasion's Edge Player's Guide](https://downloads.paizo.com/OP-Files/SFS+Invasions+Edge+Players+Guide.pdf) as well.
If you have any questions, feel free to comment or send a message.
Fairfax Home Board Game Fun!
This will be a fun night of board games hosted at our house! Feel free to bring some games if you'd like. No experience necessary, I will be happy to teach any and all games. Click [HERE ](https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1s-kHTgssAccloaJENey7_Xy_uT-AqyjTJYVEp88zis8/edit#gid=0)to see my games library.
Below are some important logistical details.
* Arrive on time! - I will typically wait about 15 minutes after to begin playing. If you come much later than that games will be in progress and there is a high probability you won't be able to play a game that night as we usually only run two to three tables and often only play one game per table per night.
* Ring the doorbell if the door is not open. I can't hear anyone knocking on the door as we are in the basement. You can also send me a message on Meet up if you would prefer for me to let you in.
* If you would like to bring a game to the group that you want to play, please post the game along with a link to a tutorial in the event chat so people can prep to play if they plan on playing too. Also arrive 10-15 minutes early so you can set your game up and be prepared to teach the game.

We’re Back! Monday Games Night!
