SciFi-Fantasy: "Iron Widow: Book 1" by Xiran Jay Zhao
The boys of Huaxia dream of pairing up with girls to pilot Chrysalises, giant transforming robots that can battle the mecha aliens that lurk beyond the Great Wall. It doesn't matter that the girls often die from the mental strain.
When 18-year-old Zetian offers herself up as a concubine-pilot, it's to assassinate the ace male pilot responsible for her sister's death. But she gets her vengeance in a way nobody expectedâshe kills him through the psychic link between pilots and emerges from the cockpit unscathed. She is labeled an Iron Widow, a much-feared and much-silenced kind of female pilot who can sacrifice boys to power up Chrysalises instead.â
To tame her unnerving yet invaluable mental strength, she is paired up with Li Shimin, the strongest and most controversial male pilot in Huaxiaâ. But now that Zetian has had a taste of power, she will not cower so easily. She will miss no opportunity to leverage their combined might and infamy to survive attempt after attempt on her life, until she can figure out exactly why the pilot system works in its misogynist wayâand stop more girls from being sacrificed.
***\*\**** *The event takes place in the Library of the Regenbogenhaus, which is open from 15h00-19h00 on Wednesdays. You're welcome to visit the library, before the book discussion in the House of Colour* \*\*

Walls, Rooms, and the Unconscious -- Architecture Between Space and Subjectivity
How do buildings shape usâlong before we consciously reflect on them?
This session explores architecture not merely as construction or aesthetics, but as a **psychological and symbolic space**. Drawing on psychoanalytic thought, we will examine how architectural forms resonate with themes such as containment, exposure, memory, repetition, and desire.
From Freudâs notion of the *psychic topography* to later reflections on space, boundaries, and the body, architecture appears not only as a shelter for human life but as a **material inscription of inner worlds**. Rooms, corridors, thresholds, windows, and walls are never neutral: they organize perception, regulate affect, and silently participate in the formation of subjectivity.
We will reflect together on questions such as:
* Can buildings function as psychic containers?
* How do architectural spaces mirror defense, repression, or openness?
* What distinguishes a space that feels âinhabitableâ from one that feels alienating?
* How do modern and historical architectures express unconscious cultural anxieties?
No prior knowledge of architecture or psychoanalysis is requiredâonly curiosity and a willingness to think slowly and together.
This is an open, reflective conversation at the intersection of **philosophy, architecture, and psychoanalysis**, intended for those interested in how space shapes inner life.
We look forward to welcoming you.
**Important:** When you register for the event, please commit to it and don't be a NO SHOW. Presumably, when the ancient philosophers decided to go to an event, they kept to it.âŠ;)
**Payment:** You can pay at the venue (Twint/Revolut/Cash). Thus, if you want to register at Meetup just click attend - no more needed ;).
We look forward to seeing you.

Writing In The Speculative Genre
My name is MJ Huntsgood, and I am a speculative horror author with award-nominated speculative fiction published in literary magazines, anthologies, and across the internet. I've taught classes online, at conventions, and in other venues. I'd love to bring my knowledge to the community.
In this one-hour workshop, weâll explore how to use speculative elements (science fiction, fantasy, horror, slipstream, dystopian, surreal) as tools for storytelling rather than decoration. The focus is on clarity, emotional stakes, and ideas that actually sustain a narrative.
This session blends short craft discussion with guided writing exercises, so youâll leave with new material on the page, not just notes.
**In this workshop, youâll:**
* Learn a simple framework for generating speculative premises from personal, social, or philosophical questions
* Explore how to ground speculative concepts in character and emotion
* Draft a short piece or opening scene using a focused speculative constraint
* Get tools you can reuse for future stories, regardless of subgenre
**This workshop is for:**
* Writers interested in speculative fiction (SF, fantasy, hybrid, literary speculative)
* Writers who want their work to feel meaningful, not gimmicky
* Writers comfortable doing short writing exercises
You donât need to be published, but some prior writing experience is helpful. This is not a critique workshop.
**Format:** 1.5 hours
**Includes:** Craft guidance, writing exercises, and optional sharing
**Bring:** Something to write with and a willingness to experiment (a limited number of pens and notebooks will be available)
