HANGING OUT AT THE SOUTH BANK
Inspired by Sheila Liming's 2023 book, Hanging Out, this event is about "daring to do nothing much, and even more than that, about daring to do it in the company of others."
You can read more about my rationale for the event, and about Liming's book here: https://experimentsingroupwisdom.substack.com/p/hanging-out
We'll make use of the fantastic indoor public spaces on London's South Bank (The Southbank Centre, The BFI Cafe, The National Theatre Cafe, etc) to spend time in the company of other people.
There are plenty of places to buy refreshments, but you can also bring your own if you prefer.
This first event will take place in the foyer of The Southbank Centre. You can find us by looking out for a big red flag with THE SUNRISE CLUB emblazoned on it (though this clearly isn't THE SUNRISE CLUB! If you want to find out about that, you can do so [here](https://www.meetup.com/the-sunrise-club/).)

And if you feel like using the hanging out as a carrot for some creative work, please join us an hour earlier for [WRITE CLUB](https://www.meetup.com/experimentsin/events/312667947) \- an hour of silent writing/reading in the same location\.
Looking forward to meeting and hanging out with you :-)

WRITE CLUB: one hour of silent writing (or reading) in the company of others
The first rule of WRITE CLUB is that you do not talk *during* WRITE CLUB.
This very simple meetup is based on the premise that public and peer accountability enables more productive writing than sitting at home and getting distracted by the fridge.
We will write/read for an hour in silence. (I will be writing thought experiments for my other meetup group: [THOUGHT EXPERIMENTS IN PUBS](https://www.meetup.com/thought-experiments-in-pubs))
If you'd like to hang out afterwards, or if you prefer just to hang out, I have another event immediately afterwards in the same place :-) You can find that here: [HANGING OUT AT THE SOUTHBANK](https://www.meetup.com/experimentsin/events/312667892)

Circling drop in evening
Circling is a 'present moment relating' practice, sometimes described as a relational meditation. It’s done in a group or with another person and invites feeling into the subtleties of one’s present experience in connection with others, often using words to share that experience.
**There is a beauty and power in the practice of circling and it is not for everyone. The practice may touch on some uncomfortable places, states, sensations or emotions. Circling invites a level of self responsibility and a willingness to set appropriate boundaries. Rather than a safe space think brave space, where we inquire and explore connection together.**
**Please contact me if you would like to discuss further whether the practice might be right for you.**
Both those new to Circling and those with more experience are very welcome.
To reserve your place, transfer £18 via my eventbrite page:
Any questions, please direct message me here or email:
[robyncontact365@gmail.com](http://robyncontact365@gmail.com)
We’ll start at 7pm (arrive from 6.50pm) and aim to finish at 9pm.
Opposite Elephant & Castle tube and Thameslink train station, and numerous bus routes.
The practices of Circling and Authentic Relating are often linked or spoken about together. Authentic Relating emerged from Circling and tends to be more structured, with “games” and sentence stems acting like guide rails for connection. Circling in its purest form is an interpersonal meditation and encourages self leadership, and is less facilitated. Both elicit intimacy and you may find quickly creating deep appreciation of the people you’re with and surprisingly meaningful connections. Always hard to define though and much better, in my opinion, to experience them a few times to really get a sense of the difference/overlaps.
**More about Circling and Terms of Service**
Circling is a practice that involves looking at and being intimate with the structures of one’s personal reality, which includes how we make sense of experience, individually and collectively. We find these practices to consistently deliver deeply meaningful experiences, and believe a few clarifications now will likely make this more accessible to you.
Because Circling is unique, carrying over assumptions from other practices can lead to misunderstandings about who we are, what we do, and how you are invited to engage. It is our intention to make it as clear as we can what Circling is and isn’t.
**Responsibility**
We see you as a free agent capable of honest self-assessment and responsible choice
This is an invitation to take responsibility for:
\- yourself and your experience
\- choices you’re making about what you’re accepting as true and significant
\- how you’re participating in and helping to sustain your situation
\- the beliefs and choices you’re bringing to the situation \(wittingly or unwittingly\) that are informing your experience\.
We refer generally to the willingness to take responsibility in these terms as “owning your experience.”
**Not Psychotherapy**
Circling as we practice it leads to transformational growth, but we do this through surrender, self-leadership, and interconnection rather than aiming for healing outcomes directly (like many modalities do). While honouring a wide variety of wisdom and psychological discernments from many schools of thought, we do not follow a therapeutic model of diagnosis and treatment. Our method is educational. Our emphasis is connection.
We are guides in a journey of presence, connection, and aliveness. We do not prescribe choices or actions. We do not see you as being in a therapeutic relationship with me. We work in the present moment, assuming wholeness that can include greater wholeness, exploring connection, staying mindful to notice the cost of reality choices and labels that too easily lead to misunderstanding or pathologizing. We bring a fresh set of eyes to what is happening, with the aim of understanding how updating our beliefs about what is happening can update our reality.
Circling is a practice of connection and meditation
\- Focus on the present moment\.
\- Maintain a non\-goal orientation that is encapsulated in the principle of “being with the other in their world\."
**Is this Right for You?**
Our workshops can be intense. People encounter places, states, emotions, beliefs, and sensations in themselves and others that are sometimes unfamiliar. We explore the unknown, the volatile, the ambiguous, as well as welcome emotions many deem as “negative” or “inappropriate” such as feelings of inadequacy, anger, sexuality, and joy. We refer to the willingness to feel difficult and uncomfortable truths as the “commitment to connection,” which of course includes a willingness to set appropriate boundaries, and speak a desire for space, distance, and non-contact. By attending our events you take responsibility for choosing to leave the practice or participate in any given moment—which might include getting intimate with these kinds of experiences.
We will often explore multiple sides of seeming opposites at once, such as independence and interdependence, chaos and order, agreement and disagreement. We believe this can reveal an underlying unity of the immediacy of experience.
If the above description of our workshops sounds potentially overwhelming or destabilizing for you, if you have mental illness or significant emotional challenges that you feel may be exacerbated by this type of transformational environment, or if you are not sure that you can be self-directed in taking care of your needs during the event, then we advise you not to enrol.
**By registering you acknowledge that you have read and agree to abide by these Terms of Service.**
Singles Mixology Masterclass | Ages 25 to 38
BOOK YOUR TICKET 👉🏼 [HERE](https://itsadate.club/event/mixology-masterclass-15/).
Calling all cocktail enthusiasts! Shake up your dating game with a group of 24 high-spirited single guests at this unique masterclass, led by mixology magicians at The Alchemist.
It’s good times guaranteed as we learn step-by-step how to prepare one of The Alchemist classics in a lively and interactive session with the odd surprise along the way! Whether you’re a little Old Fashioned or more Cosmopolitan, you’re sure to find something (and possibly someone) that stirs your senses as you shake it ‘til you make it with this fun-loving crowd. So, don’t be a Moscow Mule, come along! It will be best fun you’ve had mixing and mingling in a Long (Island iced tea) time.
Arrive at 19:30 to be welcomed by your host who will direct you to the private event area, offer you a name sticker, and give you the low-down on how things will work.
For the masterclass, you will be split into mixed groups designed to break (or crush?) the ice, get the conversation flowing, and identify a shared passion (fruit Martini) with your fellow mixologists. Between sessions, you will be mingling with other guests or have the chance to sip back, relax, and discuss the art of a perfect Negroni with a new-found connection.
The cocktail creation that you lovingly prepared is included for your enjoyment and any other drinks can be purchased locally from the bar. Your host, who has been referred to as ‘pretty fly for a Mai Tai’, will be on-hand throughout to ensure the cocktails and good times flow. Following the event, a resident DJ will be playing for those in the party mood.
Post-event matching will be available on your It’s a Date dashboard where you can continue the conversation or schedule a second date at your own pace.
If you have any questions on the event or how things will work, please get in contact with James on 07517 065 492 or [james@itsadate.club](mailto:james@itsadate.club).

Novice | 9-11am Jan 24 Vortex upstairs
**Update: full for all instruments and vocals**
full list of scheduled sessions: https://www.meetup.com/Practice-Jazz-Jam-Sessions/events/
**What is it**
The novice rehearsal sessions provide an opportunity for people who are relatively new to jazz, to play in a friendly, low-pressure environment. With a short set list that attendees can prepare in advance, it becomes a little less daunting to play and get the most out of practising in a group.
See below for this week's setlist. Please sign up before attending.
Already full for your instrument? Please check back every other Wednesday, when new sessions go live. If you keep not being able to get a spot, please message the organiser (Xie).
Location: Vortex upstairs
**Who's it for**
Anyone who has practised following the forms (chord progressions) of jazz tunes - maybe on their own at home - and would like to build up playing experience, expand repertoire and practice performing with other musicians.
There are various introductions on how jazz jams work - see e.g.
https://jazznightschool.org/pages/jam-session-basics
You don't need to get all these details right for these novice practice sessions. The set list format should offer opportunities for those at different levels of developing their playing.
While at the beginning one might struggle to follow/comp the chords or play through the melody, it gets easier over time and one can start to develop approaches to improvisation, harmonise lead lines, add intros/endings, work on communication between band members, and even listen to recordings together and pick up specific arrangements.
Bass players are expected to be able to play a walking bass line on swing tunes, and simple bossa lines for bossa novas.
Playing the melody, or "head" - the responsibility is shared between horns players (e.g. sax, trumpet, violin), guitar and piano. Feel free to discuss among the group before each song - different parts of the head or the starting / ending heads can be played by different players. Some melodies will better suit several voices at the same time, whereas others are sensitive to variations in how they are played and may prefer a single instrument at a time.
**What it's like**
A relaxed and welcoming atmosphere - please put aside any worries of making mistakes if you’re thinking of joining us for the first time. To ensure the group is accessible for those at different levels, I ask that each novice session should work on only the below four songs of the set list, unless each and every attendee feels they prefer to move on.
Each novice session is limited to up to: 1 drummer, 2 bass, 2 keys, 2 guitar, 3/4 lead instruments. Always use the top of the description to see if there is an available slot for your instrument - please do not try to work this out yourself by looking at the other attendees' instruments.

**Observing**

You can sign up as usual to any novice session, and send me a message that you'd like only to watch the session. When you feel ready, the fee paid can be carried over toward any future session where you join to play or sing at the rehearsal.
**Cancellation policy**
Please try to make it to any session you sign up to, as the jams are organised around a particular mix of instruments. However, if things do come up and you can no longer make a session, please send a message to the organiser, Xie, as soon as possible.
Places are non-refundable if your plans change, but if you provide over 1 week notice it may be possible to carry over the fee for a future session.

Coffee Chats: Have The Young (20s) Become Boring?
Time is precious. Here we value non-boring valuable chats and interactions that are fully engaging, soulfully enriching, inspiring, and leave you a bit wiser than when you arrived. In that spirit, today’s hosted laid back social coffee chat will offer a perfect haven for the inquisitive & curious to share views on the following intriguing observation.
Growing up in the west, Friday and Saturday nights meant going out with your mates for fun to enjoy music, dancing, drinking, eating, comedy, singing, fun silly moments and random conversations with strangers. Taking drugs even. Tuesdays and Thursdays evenings was for doing the same stuff but with work collegues hence the workplace use to be a great place to make new lifelong friends. Weekend daytimes were for doing healthy but social stuff like playing sports, pub lunches, visting galleries/museums and watching movies together at the Cinema or mate's house.
Fast‑forward 2026 and it feels like everything has shifted: Despite public transport running all night (it wasn't when I was in my teens/ early 20s yet my peer group stayed out late most weekends) - "young" people head home at 10pm, skip the dance floor for board games in the pub, avoid bar banter, jokes and rarely engage in organic spontaneous chats with strangers. Whatsmore the stats are wild — data show virginity rates among men hitting record highs by age 30, social anxiety and social skills off the charts. So what's happened?
We’ll explore questions like:
* Is this just nostalgia talking, or has something genuinely shifted?
* Why has typical multi generational fun pastimes (1950s to 2010s) lost its spark for the 20‑somethings?
* How much does health, economics, mobile phones, social media and gaming explain this new trend?
* Are certain professions (like tech/IT) changing the social landscape, or just attracting already‑very introverted people?
* Why are some stats so **contradictory**? Think higher reported male virginity rates by 30 alongside rising STI rates in young people. Despite tanking alcohol sales - UK alcohol related death rates per capita are still rising. What's going on?
* Target audience demographics for commericial music radio stations (Capital, Kiss etc) is still 18 to 24 suggesting young people still consume music and other popular culture but are not going out to enjoy it. Why?
* Is it harder for younger people to make genuine life-long friends today and if so why?
* Dancing is natural to all of us - every kid moves instinctively to music. So beyond a less joyous social life what happens when these innate behaviours get suppressed as adults? What has this healthy exercise and creative expression been replaced with?
* AI is predicted to take over technical job and tasks - the most future‑proof skills will be things like interpersonal skills, emotional intelligence built through real‑world socialising. Employers already complain that young people lack these innate skills. How will they get these non AI jobs?
* Levels of emotional intelligence and self-awareness particularly amongst men are at an all time low. Wiill social anxiety worsen further as the introversion trend accelerates?
* What does all this mean for dating, relationships, and starting families?
Expect lively debate, sharp humour, and a host (a former journalist) that isn’t afraid to ask the awkward questions. Bring your curiosity, your stories, and your caffeine tolerance — we’ll stir the pot on whether the young have really become more boring or have they’re just discovered new fun activities - if so what are they? And if you are in your 20s - I would love to hear your views!

This Is Not Precious: How I use Design Thinking to Create Bestselling Games
**\*This is an in-person event\***
Most people hold their ideas too tightly. They refine too early, hesitate to share half-formed concepts, and wait for “perfect” before putting anything in front of a user. Frankie Abralind works the opposite way and that mindset is a big part of why his projects succeed.
In this session, Frankie walks you through his real creative process: messy drafts, discarded versions, surprising user reactions, and the moments when he threw out something he loved because the evidence pushed him in a new direction. You’ll see firsthand how treating ideas as *disposable, not precious* accelerates learning and leads to better outcomes.
You’ll also get to examine real artifacts from the development of his games **BrainSpin**, **DIEKY**, and **eckso**. Explore prototypes, dive into design dilemmas, and hear candid stories of iteration, failure, and breakthrough that have earned former DT:DC director Frankie Abralind a reputation as an “entrepreneur who ships.”
**What you'll learn**
• What you need to test an idea quickly
• Where to find real users (beyond friends and family)
• How to ask non-leading, non-biasing questions
• User-testing methods that uncover meaningful insights
• Best practices for rapid iteration
• How to log feedback, share modifications, and track updates
• How to receive feedback with openness and use it productively
• How to build, and reward, a network of testers and supporters
**Agenda**
**6:00pm** – Snacks & connection
**6:30pm** – Case Study 1: *BrainSpin* — finding user testers
**6:50pm** – Case Study 2: *DIEKY* — play tester appreciation
**7:10pm** – Case Study 3: *eckso* — rapid prototyping
**7:30pm** – *Zenmo* — live user testing
**8:00pm** – Debrief & questions
**8:30pm** – Adjourn
