MLK JR Day of Mindful Service
Dear friends,
Please join Wake Up DC for an afternoon of mindful volunteering in celebration of the Martin Luther King Jr Day of Service. We will gather at Picnic Pavilion 29 in Rock Creek Park at noon to enjoy an hour of sitting, walking, and tea meditation, as well as sharing about our teacher, Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh's friendship and collaboration with Martin Luther King Jr. At 1 PM, we will join Rock Creek Conservancy at Piney Branch Mini-Oasis for \~2 hrs of litter clean up.
Please register for the litter clean up here: [MLK Day: Litter Cleanup at Piney Branch](https://secure.everyaction.com/O4cXKayJNEqP3Do6iscONA2?referrer=luma)
From Rock Creek Conservancy:
**What to Wear:** Please dress appropriately for the work and weather. We recommend wearing sturdy boots or sneakers and long layers, including pants and long sleeves - this ensures safety and reduces likelihood of exposure to nuisances like poison ivy.
**What to bring:** We recommend bringing water, and snacks if desired. Tools and supplies will be provided. Please bring your own gloves if you have them.
**Weather/Cancellation Policy:** All participants will be notified via email at least 12 hours before the event start time if an event is canceled due to inclement weather. If you do not hear from us you should assume the event will occur as scheduled.
**Please do NOT attend this event if you are or have been experiencing symptoms of illness.**
Trust by Hernan Diaz
Join the North Bethesda Fiction Readers in a discussion of Hernan Diaz's *[Trust](https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/hernan-diaz/trust-diaz/)* on Martin Luther King Jr Holiday, Monday, January 19. Kirkus Reviews describes the novel as "a tale of wealth, love, and madness told in four distinct but connected narratives." We will meet in the common area of a condominium association. I will send more detailed information to registrants about how to find us. (The concierge will not likely be helpful.) If the common area is not attractive to us, we will meet in the organizer's apartment. There is metered parking on the street; however, because of the holiday, you do not have to feed the meter

ADMO MLK Day Walk for Service & Community
This event combines a beautiful, slow-paced neighborhood walk through Adams Morgan (ADMO) with a meaningful day of service in honor of MLK Day. The approximately 3.0-mile loop begins at Pitango Café (1841 Columbia Rd NW) and winds through local streets and parks as we pick up litter and help protect our neighborhood environment. Much of the trash found in our community eventually washes into the Potomac River during rainstorms, and this walk offers a simple but impactful way to make a difference. Our route will pass through Kalorama and Waterside, continue down to the Zoo Loop, and return via Walter Pierce and Unity Parks.
Gloves, bags, and masks will be provided, and the walking surfaces will be paved sidewalks and asphalt paths. The pace will be relaxed, but participants should be comfortable walking three miles and should use their judgment if they have back or mobility concerns. Please bring water, snacks, layered clothing, and sturdy, comfortable footwear. Well-behaved, leashed dogs are welcome, and optional brunch in Adams Morgan afterward is available for those who would like to join.
This is a joint hike between the ADMO Hiking Club and the Sierra Club. All hikers will be required to sign the Sierra Club waiver form to participate. Sierra Club Potomac Region Outings (SCPRO) appreciates a voluntary $2 per person donation to support our many volunteer-led activities. Also, you can become a Sierra Club member by clicking "join" on the Virginia Sierra Club website: [http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia](http://www.sierraclub.org/virginia)
Dupont Circle is the closest Metro stop (.6 miles). Bus routes C51, C53, D70, and D74 are all within a couple blocks of Pitango. There is metered and free street parking in the surrounding neighborhood. Please arrive early so you have enough time to find parking.
Doubles Volleyball - Competitive BB+/A
Let's get together to play some competitive doubles volleyball.
**COST**: FREE
**Court Type**: Outdoor grass
**Minimum Skill Requirements**: BB+ (click [here](https://docs.google.com/document/d/1PojSi4qdlRsv1msCHhvpQ43iDc4FfzQwpWCc3kafVMY/mobilebasic) for details)
Attention:
1. This event is **NOT on a first come-first serve** basis and players with higher skill level and players who can bring a net/ball will get priority over others on the wait list.
2. Since skill levels are **self-reported**, some new attendees may not meet the expected level. For doubles, we encourage you to choose a partner you can enjoy the game with, and since this a competitive event, it is okay if you make a strong team and win all the games.
3. Each person must help set up and take down one net, leaving some nets unset for latecomers.
4. Please answer all questions, so it's helpful for us to organize the event.

Quantum Enhanced Digital Therapeutics: Human Computer Interaction
Title: Quantum Enhanced Digital Therapeutics: Human Computer Interaction (HCI) and Health Informatics for Mental Health
Date: Jan 24 2026 13:00 - 15:00 EST
Summary: This talk offers an accessible overview of how quantum computing ideas may inform the next generation of digital tools for mental health. Ishan will sketch potential roles for pattern discovery, adaptive interfaces guided by human-computer interaction, and approaches to protect patient privacy, using examples drawn from public literature. The focus is on what is feasible now, what remains experimental, and how careful evaluation can guide responsible progress in health informatics. The session closes with open questions and a practical framing to help the community explore this space.
An overview of where quantum computing could add value to digital mental health tools today, what is still experimental, and how human-computer interaction and health informatics can guide responsible evaluation.
Speaker:
Ishan Shivansh Bangroo is a graduate researcher at Penn State University in the College of Information Sciences and Technology. His work sits at the intersection of health informatics and human-computer interaction, with a growing interest in quantum-inspired methods. He studies adaptive clinical interfaces and trustworthy analytics for mental health support, aiming to make digital tools clearer, safer, and easier to use.

How to Pick a Market and Analyze Properties
**What makes one market a goldmine and another a money pit?**
Success in real estate starts long before you make an offer. Choosing the right market and knowing how to analyze a deal are what separate confident investors from expensive mistakes.
At this month’s meeting, we’ll talk about how to evaluate markets, spot demand drivers, and understand local fundamentals.
We’ll also walk through how to analyze properties, run the numbers, and determine whether a deal actually makes sense before you move forward.
