LJC Meet-up at Tessl - Spring AI to AI-Native Java Architectures
LJC Meet-up at Tessl - Spring AI to AI-Native Java Architectures
**Please register on [Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/ljc-meet-up-at-tessl-spring-ai-to-ai-native-java-architectures-tickets-1982178243485) to join this event.** **About this event** **vJUG Connect** is teaming up with the **London Java Community** for an evening all about AI and modern Java. This hybrid event covers the full spectrum, from practical Spring-based AI integration to the architectural principles behind AI-native applications. Learn how Java developers are moving beyond “AI as a feature” and towards systems where intelligence is built in from day one. **Location:** Virtual: [Join us on YouTube](https://www.youtube.com/live/hYHUxVZ7n2Q?si=uvI_lG1xqx0M3na3 "https://www.youtube.com/live/hYHUxVZ7n2Q?si=uvI_lG1xqx0M3na3") Venue: Tessl AI Limited - 210 Pentonville Rd, London N1 9JY, United Kingdom **Agenda:** * 6:00pm – Doors open (live stream begins on YouTube with vJUG) * 6:45pm - Kick off and message from our partners * Session 1: Bootiful Spring AI with Josh Long * Session 2: AI Native Architecture for Java Applications with Pratik Patel (live stream ends) * 8pm – Networking * 9pm – Wrap-up **Talk 1: Bootiful Spring AI with Josh Long** The age of artificial intelligence (because the search for regular intelligence hasn't gone well..) is nearly at hand, and it's everywhere! But is it in your application? It should be. AI is about integration, and here the Java and Spring communities come second to nobody. In this talk, we'll demystify the concepts of modern day Artificial Intelligence and look at its integration with the white hot new Spring AI project, a framework that builds on the richness of Spring Boot to extend them to the wide world of AI engineering. **Jodh Long, Spring Developer Advocate at Broadcom** [Josh (@starbuxman)](http://twitter.com/starbuxman "http://twitter.com/starbuxman") has been the first Spring Developer Advocate since 2010. Josh is a Java Champion, author of 7 books (including "[Reactive Spring](http://reactivespring.io/ "http://reactivespring.io/")") and numerous best-selling video training (including "[Building Microservices with Spring Boot Livelessons](https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/building-microservices-with/9780134192468/ "https://www.safaribooksonline.com/library/view/building-microservices-with/9780134192468/")" with Spring Boot co-founder Phil Webb), and an open-source contributor (Spring Boot, Spring Integration, Axon, Spring Cloud, Activiti, Vaadin, etc), a Youtuber ([Coffee + Software with Josh Long](https://youtube.com/@coffeesoftware "https://youtube.com/@coffeesoftware") as well as my [Spring Tips series](http://bit.ly/spring-tips-playlist "http://bit.ly/spring-tips-playlist") ), and a podcaster ("[A Bootiful Podcast](http://bootifulpodcast.fm/ "http://bootifulpodcast.fm/")"). **Talk 2: AI Native Architecture for Java Applications** We are currently moving from "AI-enabled" systems, where artificial intelligence is an additive feature, to "AI-native" systems, where intelligence is the foundational, architectural core. An AI-native application is not merely a traditional application with a machine learning model bolted on; it is an entirely new class of software designed from the ground up to learn, adapt, and act autonomously. These systems are architected around continuous data ingestion, real-time model interaction, and a contextual understanding of the application and runtime environment. We'll discuss the key elements mentioned above and the difference between existing applications that have added AI capability as an accessory, and this new class of applications that are built with AI in mind from the start. While we'll use the Java ecosystem in examples, the principles we'll discuss are language agnostic. We'll focus on the architecture discuss these topics: * Big Data and data pipelines * Integration with other services and APIs * Testing considerations * Evolution of UI/AX **Pratik Patel, Lead Developer Relations Engineer at Azul Ststems** Pratik Patel is a Java Champion, developer advocate at Azul Systems and has written 3 books on programming (Java, Cloud and OSS). An all around software and hardware nerd with experience in the healthcare, telecom, financial services, and startup sectors. He's also a co-organizer of the Atlanta Java User Group and Enterprise AI Atlanta, conference chairperson for Devnexus, frequent speaker at tech events, and master builder of nachos. Twitter: [https://x.com/prpatel](https://x.com/prpatel "https://x.com/prpatel") LinkedIn: [https://www.linkedin.com/in/prpatel/](https://www.linkedin.com/in/prpatel/ "https://www.linkedin.com/in/prpatel/") Huge thanks to our friends at **Tessl** for sponsoring this event and supporting our community. China Study Group: Chuang Collective, "Sorghum & Steel" - Part 3
China Study Group: Chuang Collective, "Sorghum & Steel" - Part 3
**This is a the third chapter of our longform Tuesday-night reading group on China. If you didn't get to the first meetings, don't worry - come along anyway!** This time, we're reading chapter 3, ***Ossification.*** Find the text here: https://chuangcn.org/journal/one/sorghum-and-steel/3-ossification/ \-\-\-\- About the China Study Group: What can we learn from the Chinese Revolution? That's the question we'll seek to answer as LMRG brings the heat to you once again, now on Tuesday nights, with our all-new China Study Group. In this long-form reading series, we'll meet monthly for in-depth discussion of a series of texts on China, its revolution, the socialist market economy, and more. As the [New Cold War](https://thetricontinental.org/wp-content/uploads/2022/09/20221107_MR-NCW_EN_Web.pdf) heats up, it's never been more important to learn what we can about the country which the US, UK and EU have all described - following the [American phrasebook](https://www.gmfus.org/news/china-systemic-rival-systemic-threat) \- as a "systemic rival"\. For the first set of meetups within this series, we'll be tackling *Sorghum and Steel: The Socialist Developmental Regime and the Forging of China* by the [Chuang](https://chuangcn.org) collective. Chuang is an independent, autonomous collective of anti-authoritarian Chinese communists and labour activists whose work provides a rare opportunity for English readers to get vital detail on historical and contemporary dynamics within Chinese society from a materialist, communist, and crucially - balanced perspective. *Sorghum and Steel* will provide our Study Group with an essential foundation in Chinese history to equip us going forward. Throughout this series, we'll give equal space to a wide variety of sources, from anti-authoritarian Chinese communists opposed to the contemporary Politburo to members of Xi Jinping's own ideological brain-trust. We'll dig deep into elements of the Chinese revolutionary experience such as the CPC's localist co-operative economics of the Civil War period, the forgotten grass roots of the Cultural Revolution, the *Boulan Fazheng* period and China's rejection of "shock therapy" as seen in the USSR, and the theory underpinning China's recent turn away from the liberal economics of the 2000s. Take care everyone and happy reading!

Having done martial arts for 5 years in another art, I was open to new ideas of what may come with this one. I am thrilled to say it has been fantastic. My instructor Stephen is a legend, he knows what he's talking about and has a no bs way of getting to a point. He is a lover of martial arts and it shows. His enthusiasm rubs off onto myself and the other students which creates a great learning environment. This art is marvellous, the group is a humble yet enthusiastic class of students coming to learn. I felt like I was part of the group the moment I joined. Higher belted student don't have an ego and are happy to help and train along side anyone in the class. Joining Bushin has been a tremendous experience." Konrad "Great place to learn self-defence . Coach with a passion to MMA show you how to react and defend yourself" Penny "I was completely new to martial arts so I didn't really know what I wanted to learn but I love the way they teach a mixture of martial arts and have a set syllabus. I felt like I was learning boxing, Kickboxing, jujitsu and self defence all in the same class which was great value for money!" Elizabeth "Great class for beginners and those with experience. Stephen is so welcoming and has been great at helping me find equipment and modify exercises to help with my mobility issues! Really recommend for anyone wanting to try martial arts or get fit in a friendly atmosphere :)" Lucia "I joined Bushin after a friend of mine was attacked in London and I thought it was a good idea to learn how to defend myself in case something like that happened to me as well. I didn't have any previous experience of self defense or fighting and I thought that this would hold me back, but it was definitely not the case: people in Bushin are so welcoming and nice to each other, always ready to help - it's truly a place for every level, from beginner to black belt. It's much more than a self defense class, it's real street fighting and a super good workout as well , but most importantly, it's great fun! I highly recommend it" Check out these and our other reviews for yourself!: [Club Reviews](https://maps.app.goo.gl/Gm9DV2xyYun55UqS8) And most importantly BOOK YOUR FREE TRIAL TODAY! Royal Society - Clifford Paterson Lecture: Weighing molecules with light
Royal Society - Clifford Paterson Lecture: Weighing molecules with light
Meet world-leading researchers from universities and science institutions across the UK at the Royal Society’s public events of cutting-edge science. Tonight's lecture is **"Weighing molecules with light"** as the **Royal Society Clifford Paterson Prize Lecture** **2026** delivered by **Professor Philipp Kukura FRS**. **This livestream event is free to join and requires prior registration with the Royal Society at the web address below.** **[https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/02/clifford-paterson-prize-lecture/](https://royalsociety.org/science-events-and-lectures/2026/02/clifford-paterson-prize-lecture/)** **SUMMARY** Professor Kukura will cover how the development and use of scales was critical to trade, the creation of money and thus the development of human society. Weight and mass are used somewhat interchangeably for day-to-day objects, but need to be differentiated as objects become smaller and smaller. Once we reach scales much smaller than the width of human hair, gravity is no longer the dominant force experienced by objects and can thus not be used to quantify objects by ‘weighing’ them. Instead, we need to measure their mass, which corresponds to the amount of matter in an object. Due to the difficulty of operating on the microscopic scale, only a very small number of methods have been developed to measure the mass of molecules over the past century. Professor Kukura will describe the development of mass photometry – a method that measures the mass of molecules and viruses by shining light at them, effectively ‘looking at them’. Professor Kukura will explain the principles of operation, and show how this technique is being used broadly in academia and industry to understand the basis of disease and aid in the development of next generation therapeutics. **SPEAKER** **Philipp Kukura** was born in Czechoslovakia and educated in Germany, the UK, the US and Switzerland. His research focuses on the interaction of light with matter, with a particular emphasis on the development of new approaches to study biomolecules, and thereby their function and regulation. He has been part of the Chemistry faculty at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of Exeter College since 2011. In 2018 he co-founded Refeyn Ltd. With Justin Benesch, Daniel Cole and Gavin Young, which has commercialised mass photometry, and acted as CEO until 2021. He is currently Professor of Chemistry at the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience Discovery at the University of Oxford focussing on next generation light-based technologies for the life sciences. ## Attending the event * The event is free to join, please register via [register via Eventbrite](https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/royal-society-milner-award-lecture-2025-professor-iryna-gurevych-tickets-1341789300919?aff=oddtdtcreator) * Live subtitles will be available in-person and virtually ### Attending online * The lecture can be attended in person at the Royal Society * **Please note** that as this is a free event, we anticipate that not everyone who reserves tickets will use them and we therefore make more tickets available than there are seats. This session draws on Anthropic’s experience building Claude Code to explore the practical tradeoffs you’ll encounter when designing agentic systems at scale. We’ll cover when MCP makes sense (and when it doesn’t), approaches to tool discovery and management as your agent’s capabilities grow, and the often-overlooked challenges of running agents in production. Along the way, I’ll share some of the unexpected ways we use Claude Code internally at Anthropic and workflows that might spark ideas for your own teams. Whether you’re just starting to experiment with agents or already running them in production, you’ll hopefully leave with a mental model for the key decisions ahead and the tradeoffs each one entails. **Talk 2:** ***AI as Your New SRE: The Next Frontier of DevOps with Paul Stack*** In the early days of DevOps, automation was the revolution. Today, AI is bringing the second wave – not just automating tasks, but reasoning, predicting, and autonomously managing complex systems like a tireless Site Reliability Engineer. In this talk, we’ll explore how AI will reshape the DevOps lifecycle: from intelligent CI/CD pipelines and automated incident response to self‑healing infrastructure and generative configuration management. You’ll see live demos of AI detecting, diagnosing, and fixing infrastructure issues in real time, and we’ll discuss the risks – over‑reliance on AI, governance challenges, and the need for explainability – plus the steps teams can take today to prepare for an AI‑augmented future.
