‘Women’s stories’ Our host, Lesley, is looking for stories from a female point of view. Have you had to rebel against cultural expectations? What’s motherhood really like? Body positivity -v- societal expectations. Diets! Bad dates! The mental load The menopause. Peri post. Stories that other women will relate to in celebration of womanhood. Lesley is looking forward to hearing your stories in preparation for our March show. If you've got a story or just an idea, come along and pitch it for the show. If your story is shortlisted for the show, our host will work with you as you polish and rehearse it. 📌 Story Requirements: - Your story must be true - It must be told in the first person—you are the main character - It should be between 5-10 minutes You don't need to have a completed or polished story ready - just a beginning idea is okay. We are writers of all levels – beginners to published. And we meet at STARBUCK at IFC (P2 Shop2097-2098, International Finance Centre), Central for fun writing and sharing sessions! We all write a one-sentence prompt, then each select one at random. We write something based on the prompt for 45 minutes, after which, we share our work with each other and discuss as desired. Of course, sharing is optional but encouraged. (Feedback is always polite and respectful.) Alternatively, you can bring your own project(s) to work on in the company of fellow writers (published and yet-to-be published). You can share your project(s), too, if you want. Welcome to Write Night in HK! This is an evening writing group that meets to scribble and share writing with an after-work/dinner drink! We' meet at Yardley Taproom in Central (62 Peel Street), as they typically have a pretty good and chilled out vibe in the week-day evenings. We write and we share writing - please bring 6-8 printed copies of your work (max 2 pages). I know printouts are super old fashioned - but the benefit is that others can scribble all over them to give you feedback, and gives our eyes a break from screens. The evening group will run differently from the daytime group - we'll do some writing and give each other feedback on our own prior work. So, the evening will go in two parts: 1. We start with a 20 min writing exercise, based on a prompt - bring something to write or type on! Then we'll share and give feedback. 2. We go over any written material you've done before and care to share with us: 2 x full printed pages at most (maybe a bit more if spaced out, such as with poetry). Please bring around 6-8 print-outs. Remember that the place may be a bit noisy - so may be hard for people to hear you if you read your work out loud to others on the night. A note on feedback - please be prepared to offer constructive, nice and supportive feedback. No 'brutal honesty' please. Most people are just getting started, and positive support is the order of the night for this group. Book Club, which focuses on native plants, sponsored by Loudoun Wildlife Conservancy and LCPL. At this meeting we’ll discuss the book Animal, Vegetable, Miracle by Barbara Kingsolver. Both memoir and journalistic investigation, this book explores how the Kingsolver family took on a new challenge: to spend a year on a locally -produced diet, paying close attention to the provenance of all they consume. Concerned about the environmental, social, and physical costs of American food culture, they hoped to recover what Kingsolver considers our nation’’s lost appreciation for farms and the natural processes of food production. [Profs and Pints Northern Virginia](https://www.profsandpints.com/washingtondc) presents: **“The Hidden Cleopatra,”** an excavation through myth and slander to uncover the real Egyptian queen, with Jacquelyn Williamson, an Egyptologist and associate professor of archaeology and ancient art at George Mason University. A long list of painters have depicted her, Marilyn Monroe and Kim Kardashian have posed as her, and Vivien Leigh and Elizabeth Taylor famously portrayed her in Hollywood films. At the end of the day, however, what most of us think we know about Cleopatra is wrong, the product of the ancient Rome’s “fake news” and anti-Egypt propaganda. Learn about the real Cleopatra—and how our understanding of her came to be so distorted—with Professor Jacquelyn Williamson, scholar of women and power in ancient Egypt, teacher of courses on ancient Egyptian art and archaeology, and author of *Nefertiti’s Sun Temple: A New Cult Complex at Tell el-Amarna.* Dr. Williamson will walk us through how the first Roman emperor, Octavian, created the distorted image of Cleopatra as seductress that we know today as part of his political scheming to defeat his rival Antony and end the Roman Republic once and for all. Cleopatra has been the subject of debate and controversy ever since. William Shakespeare later relied on ancient Roman sources such as Horace and Plutarch in writing *Antony and Cleopatra*, and his play helped give rise to countless other works offering a distorted picture of her. Professor Williamson argues that “Cleopatra was a human being, like you and I,” and “deserves the dignity of being represented as accurately as possible.” Her efforts to set the record straight have met frustration, however—after being extensively interviewed for the recent Netflix historical docuseries Queen Cleopatra, she concluded that it, too, had missed the mark. You’ll gain a much deeper appreciation of the challenges of researching and accurately depicting the ancient past from Dr. Williamson, who also has taught at Harvard, Brandeis, and the University of California at Berkeley and is involved with an ongoing archaeological investigation of Queen Nefertiti’s sun temple. What does love really look like—not in theory, but in lived experience? For this gathering of **Taproom Theology**, we’re doing something intentionally different. Rather than a single speaker or teaching, **individuals and couples have been invited to share their own stories**; stories of romantic love, deep friendship, commitment, loss, singleness, and the relationships that have shaped who they are. Love is often simplified or sentimentalized, yet most of us know it’s far more complex. As Taylor Swift puts it simply and honestly, **“The best people in life are free.”** This evening invites us to explore how love grows across its many forms: * *Agape* — self‑giving love that chooses presence over perfection * *Philia* — the love of friendship, loyalty, and shared life * And the evolving ways love shows up in partnerships, seasons of singleness, and chosen communities in the 21st century Some stories will come marriages or committed relationships. Others from friendships and yet others from the courage to be single without being alone. As C.S. Lewis reminds us, **“Friendship is born at the moment when one person says to another, ‘What! You too?’”** This gathering is not about offering advice, fixing relationships, or presenting “ideal” stories. It’s about **witnessing real love** as it actually unfolds: flawed, faithful, hopeful, and human. Leo Buscaglia once wrote, **“Love is life. And if you miss love, you miss life.”** Whether you come with a partner, a friend, or on your own, you belong here. Because love isn’t something we master, it’s something we practice, in relationship and in community. Love is a journey. And tonight, we’ll travel it together.
