Fiction Feedback Workshop
Fiction Feedback Workshop
In our regular feedback workshops, we have three writers sharing a sample of their writing for immediate feedback, advice and encouragement. Critique is led and moderated by your host. You learn more by listening to the writing of others and the feedback their piece receives on the night than you can imagine. We've been running these sessions since 2010 and there's a reason they fill up so fast! For reading samples, pieces must be **3,500 words or less** as you'll have about 45mins for reading and discussion on your excerpt from around the table. Most people bring an excerpt from their novel or a short story of all genres and styles. You must have booked your place before making a request to read. If you'd like to read, book your seat first and post a comment below with ***'I'd like to read'*** and I will confirm. It's a first request, first reading system so do check if there have been three requests made already. If this one has no reading spots left, you might like to book early for the next upcoming session. Reading spots go FAST but there are always more to come. That said, we don't allow the same people usually to share work in consecutive sessions. If you are reading, **please bring enough printed copies (at least 10)** of your pages so members can make additional feedback/editing notes for you during the reading. All copies will be returned to you after the feedback has concluded. New members are always welcome in these groups. Most people come along to a few sessions before offering feedback, commenting or requesting to read but it's up to you. If you want to read right away, great, but if you want to come along and see how we roll first, that makes sense too. Again, you'll be surprised by how much you can learn from others by listening to the pieces and their feedback. Most sessions have 50/50 split on new members vs regulars. After the workshop, most of us head to the bar for a social drink or two and extended conversation about the joys and woes of writing. **TICKETS:** £18.00 for venue arrangements, organising and hosting. Please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. **PLEASE NOTE:** **Refunds or credits will only be provided if the meetup is cancelled or rescheduled.** We cannot offer refunds or credit for another session if you decide not to attend on the day. Please change your RSVP if you no longer plan to attend. We often have people on the waiting list and we'd hate for others to miss out. Failing to show up means you'll be flagged as a 'no show' and potentially removed from the group if this happens frequently. It takes only a minute to change your RSVP before the meeting starts. Manners cost nothing, folks. Location: **Williamsons Tavern** is located in a tiny courtyard off Bow Lane in Cheapside, closest tube station is Bank. Address: 1 Groveland Ct, London EC4M 9EH. Grab a drink and come to the private room downstairs. We start promptly so please try and be on time. Try the official Meetup app to receive last-minute updates and notifications about our events as they happen to your phone. [Download it now](https://www.meetup.com/apps/). These workshops are hosted by me - Lisa Goll, Boss Lady at London Writers' Cafe - I'm a publishing professional with more than twenty years of working within the publishing industry. Tim's walks: A walk with Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury set
Tim's walks: A walk with Virginia Woolf and the Bloomsbury set
Join me on a walk through Bloomsbury and Fitzrovia, the centre of London's intellectual life in the first half of the twentieth century. We'll walk in the footsteps of the Bloomsbury set where a group of immensely talented individuals transformed the way modern society thought about itself. Grouped around two beautiful sisters, Vanessa Bell and Virginia Woolf, some of the greatest names in art, literature, poetry, philosophy and economics met, talked, lived and loved in Bloomsbury. John Maynard Keynes, TS Elliot, Bertrand Russell, Vita Sackville West, Augustus John and lytton Strachey will all make an appearance. 'They lived in squares and loved in triangles'; I will look at where they lived, their tangled love affairs and the impact they made on society. We'll then cross Tottenham Court Road and enter Fitzrovia; a very different area, grittier and more downmarket. We'll walk in the footsteps of George Orwell and Dylan Thomas and I'll show you where Orwell's great novel '1984' was set. We meet in Pret A Manger in High Holborn, a few hundred yards from Holborn tube at 10.30 to start walking at 10.45 We’ll end in a pub a couple of hours later made famous by George Orwell, Augustus John and Dylan Thomas and with a wonderful collection of paintings and photos of and by the Bloomsberries Fee: £12 I have a card reader so you can pay by credit card or Bank transfer to: 08-90-33 07162019 or PayPal to timpotter53@gmail.com or cash on the day We meet at the Pret 125 High Holborn London WC1V 6AN Make sure you go to the right Pret. It’s on the corner of Southampton Place and High Holborn. When you come out of Holborn tube it’s diagonally across High Holborn and kingsway. Phone: O7846 899156

No prior experience is necessary. Location: Exact location within the National Theatre is shared 10-15 mins before the event, depending on the availability of the seating. Who Did What?
Who Did What?
Who Did What is a new type of game where teams are presented with a list of twenty famous people and then match each person from another list with something they achieved during their lifetime. (No sports or maths). Clues will be short and/or cryptic! Four players max per team, but the lower number teams get a point per player start from the biggest team. For example, four teams of one, two, three and four. Four player team, no advantage, (the biggest and theoretically the more knowledge between them, except it doesn't always work like that). Three player team. one point start. Two player team. two point start. One player team. three point start. Prizes of interesting flavour chocolate and also for the funniest team name chosen by Sue, my glamorous assistant. Hosted mainly on Mondays, but not the first Monday of the month, (when it is a Tuesday instead) at various central London Wetherspoons. Event time is from 2-4pm, which allows plenty of time to get away for transport. Twenty five minutes for the quiz, five for marking up, and socialising time for the remainder period. There is a small charge of £5 cash/card to cover prize and Meetup costs. This is a great way to make new friends or catch up with old ones. See you there! Contact number on the day is 07422334411 if your transport is delayed. Please leave your name if texting. **Don’t forget to cancel via the “Edit RSVP” button if you can’t make it. Please do this well in advance when you know, so it allows good notice for someone else to take your place, and minimizes waiting time for non-attendees.** **Your consideration is greatly appreciated.**

First Draft FINISHED. Now What...?
First Draft FINISHED. Now What...?
**Congratulations! You've finished a first draft! It might have taken months - or years even - to complete, and now revising it begins \*face palm\*** In this masterclass session, aimed at all new writers, we'll interrogate first drafts, define the makings of a second draft and learn the established paths of rewriting towards it. By learning to redraft through the lens of character, structure, conflict, voice, storytelling and more, you'll find a path that best suits you to produce the next draft. There are many ways forward. Learning to rewrite effectively is a prized skill within its own right. This will be a very practical workshops with writing exercises, examples and plenty of group discussion. You are not alone in your worry over rewriting. Not at all. Incidentally, most full-length novels are redrafted from start to finish at least four times before they're ready for agents or publishers, but every single novel and its writer are different and there is no hard and fast rule. It's a fact that every first draft will need revising before it is submitted to any competition, agent or publisher. Rewriting from first draft to second can be the most challenging for some writers who find reworking the hardest. So many novels languish as a first draft because beyond the organic, creative, freewheeling writing process comes the editing, refining and redrafting hell which many writers find too daunting. Fear not! Come to this workshop and learn what comes after you write **'the end'** for the first time. After this session (I promise) you'll see your first draft more clearly; where it might need the most rewrites and how you might begin to tackle them. A first draft can feel like chaos distilled but that's okay. We'll make sense of it together. Join me and 10-15 other writers as we go through it. **Date & Timing:** 2:30pm to 5:30pm with a quick break in the middle. Doors open at 2:20pm. Please aim to arrive on time as we'll start at 2:30pm. We'll adjourn to the main bar after the session for a few social drinks and conversation. No problem if you can't hang around. PLEASE DON'T bring any of your own food to drinks to the pub. They'll have my head and we'll never be allowed back. **Location:** The Artillery Arms, 102 Bunhill Row, London EC1Y 8ND. Closest stations are Old Street, Barbican and Moorgate. Please grab a drink at the bar (they have all the drinks + coffee/tea) and come to the room upstairs. **Cost:** £15.00 to pay for venue hire, content, preparation and event organising. Please follow the steps to pay via PayPal when you RSVP. Refunds or credits will only be offered if the meetup is cancelled by admin. Please change your RSVP to 'Not Going' if you can no longer attend as we often have people waiting and we'd hate for them to miss out. Download the Meetup app to manage your RSVPs quickly. Not sure this is for you? Any questions, please post a comment or DM the organiser.
🚀Explore The Night Sky + Post Pub Drinks🔭(Subject to Weather)🪐
🚀Explore The Night Sky + Post Pub Drinks🔭(Subject to Weather)🪐
🌌Ever look up and marvel with insatiable curiosity at both the beauty and wonder of the **universe?** That wild sobering thought that somewhere in the chaos of creation - the emergence of life - the universe became **conscious** enough to look back and ask the fundamental questions; How it all started, our evolution and place in it, and where else in the cosmos other complex life might exist (we know almost every star you see has planets orbiting with up to **20 billion habitable exoplanets** easily in our galaxy alone!)? 🪐🌟🌟🌟 🌍Then RSVP to view the potential life harbouring moons of **Jupiter**, comets, the famous **Orion Nebula** where stars like our sun were born, the majestic rings of **Saturn**, the international space station, well known star fields, remnants of **supernova** witnessed by our early ancestors, multi-star solar systems (think the double sun in Starwars), the Tau Ceti star with **2 Earth like planets** orbiting in the habitable zone, plus a range of other fascinating celestial wonderments (comets, galaxies) over drinks and engaging chats and banter this Jan fully hosted by a passionate amateur astronomer and former global Journalist covering big picture stories including cutting edge science related ones. 🚀In between observing - we'll have **drinks and engaging chats** on all astronomy related topics for those inclined - space exploration, Fermi Paradox, Astrobiology, Cosmology, paleontology, SETI/Drake Equation (I have my own augmented version giving more realistic estimates of likely alien civilisations!), exoplanetology etc as well as non space chatter and banter too. No doubt we'll hear the usual jokes we've all heard before! If those don't make you laugh, my impersonation of Los Angeles ET will! 👽 And to help set the mood and make the night feel even extra galactic, I’ll put my DJ hat to play some space‑themed tunes and songs about the stars! **======= Joining Astronomers Group & Telescopes =======** I'm able to take a limited number of people (please only RSVP if you can make it) to join my friendly informal relaxed London amateur astronomers' club that have been for over a decade with their regulars made up of up to about 150 people. As there will be people attending from this private Astronomers group as well as others from one of my other groups - the total attendees will be far higher than rsvps here and the public liability insurance only covers a max number of people - hence I need to impose strict limits on attendance. Over the years we have enjoyed numerous social evenings of stargazing and thought provoking chatter with people of all ages and varying levels of astronomy knowledge - so complete beginners that are genuinely curious about the universe are very welcome. If you are just looking to meet generic randoms then there are others groups that will better cater for that. The world renowed **BBC Television Sky at Night** also attended our events pre covid and interviewed some of us for it's show that aired on BBC1 in Feb 2019. BBC **Radio London** (94.9 FM / digital) were there Aug 2023 to cover our meteor shower event broadcasting live to millions of Londoners for 3 hours You don't need a telescope as you will be able to view through scopes belonging to me and other club members (as long as you behave responsibly and don't temper with expensive equipment). If you have your own telescope/binoculars feel free to bring along and I can help you setting it up if you're a newbie **==== Food & Drinks With Seating From Warm Indoor Cafe ====** Alcoholic beverages (wine, beer, cider only), hot drinks and food/snacks will be available to purchase from an indoor cafe at the observation point which Regent's park keep open exclusively for the astronomers group so please don't bring your own drinks **==== ITINERARY =====** We will meet outside Camden Station. After a short wait for anyone delayed, I will escort everyone to our observation point in the local park 15 minutes walk away and brief you in terms of what to expect, observing etiquette, tips, equipment handling and take any questions you have - weather general or astronomy/cosmology related. **After Drinks:** Unless I have a very important 9AM Thursday deadline for a client presentation or something that I'm still gonna be writing 2 mins before start - most of us usually head our way back to Camden for another drink. If so - I will annouce the pub when we leave the park **==== What Can You Expect To See (this time of year)? ====** * Orion Nebula * Jupiter and 4 moons * Meteors * Andromedia Galaxy * Saturn, rings & moon * Star clusters such as the Pleiades & Owl Cluster etc * International Space station fly by * Venus & Mercury * Binary & tripple star systems (think planet *Tatooine in* Starwars!), * Neptune * Uranuus * Mars * Our moon * A look towards the galactic centre where that supermassive £22b Labour black hole sits (Sagittarius A) More here from Jodrell Bank Observatory/Astrophysics Centre: [http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/](http://www.jb.man.ac.uk/astronomy/nightsky/) Guide to viewing the cosmos for beginners: [https://phys.org/news/2018-05-universe-distant-starstips-cosmology-backyard.html#jCp](https://phys.org/news/2018-05-universe-distant-starstips-cosmology-backyard.html#jCp) **===Weather Dependent=====** The event is subject to clear skies forecasts on the night so if on the actual afternoon of the event the weather forecasts looks unsuitable beyond doubt then I will postpone so please check the event status on the day of the event . [YOU CAN BOOK YOUR PLACE AT THE FOLLOWING LINK: https://www.writeandpint.com/events/self-society-writing-eating-drinking-a-mini-pub-quiz-at-the-end .... **Saturday 24 Jan 2026 \| 11:00 – 17:00** You’re warmly invited to join us for a **full-day creative writing workshop** with food & drink, literary handouts, and a little fun thrown in for good measure. *** ### **Self & Society** A day exploring how **inner lives meet outer worlds** — how we’re shaped by the places, cultures, and systems we move through, and how writing helps us notice, question, and respond. This isn’t just about poetry (though poetry is welcome). We’ll work with **prose, memoir, philosophy, fragments, and hybrid forms**, reading widely, writing freely, and following curiosity wherever it leads. By the end of the day, you’ll leave with: * New writing * Ideas sparked * Drafts begun * Plenty to keep working with long after the workshop ends *** ### **What do we mean by Self & Society?** We’re interested in writing that asks questions like: * What does it mean to live a life from the inside, in a shared world? * How do private thoughts and public realities shape one another? * Where do personal experience and wider culture meet? * How can writing help us see — and speak — more clearly? We’ll read short extracts from poets, essayists, philosophers, and storytellers, then experiment with their approaches through guided writing exercises. No dogma. No right answers. Just enquiry, attention, and honest language. *** ### **The plan** * Start the day with tea or coffee and a gentle warm-up writing session * Break for brunch at The Reliance Pub * Settle into reading, conversation, supported exploration, and more writing * Wind down with a late afternoon / early evening drink * Finish with a mini pub quiz, purely for fun *** ### **What’s included** * Full day of creative writing workshops & exercises * Tea or coffee to start * Reliance Pub brunch platter * Late-afternoon / early-evening drink * Thoughtful literary handouts * **FREE Penguin Mini Classic** for every participant *** ### **What to bring** * Yourself * Pen & notebook — or a laptop if you prefer *** ### **Our style** * Friendly, supportive, inclusive * Everybody welcome — no experience necessary * No pressure to share or perform * Take part quietly, actively, or anywhere in between If you have any doubts or questions, text me on **+44 (0) 7534 981 636** Warm wishes, **Sean** *A Write & a Pint*

BreadBreakers One-Meeting Book Club: Of Mice and Men
**BreadBreakers is a community where people of all different belief systems and backgrounds can create community - and what better way to do that than reading together?** Join us as we combine the kind, curious, and welcoming atmosphere of a BreadBreakers dinner with the thought-provoking, fun format of a book club. Here's what to expect: * We'll be reading *Of Mice and Men*, by John Steinbeck. * This will be a one-meeting club, so if you've ever wanted to do a book club but couldn't commit to multiple meetings, here's your opportunity! * Snacks :) * BreadBreakers ground rules apply - we'll lead with curiosity, converse with kindness, and strive to dig beneath the surface level. * We'll be gathering in Meeting Room 1 at the Reston Regional Library. * Participants will be responsible for obtaining their own copies of the book. [Here's the Amazon link, if helpful.](https://www.amazon.com/Mice-Men-John-Steinbeck/dp/0140177396) * Our BreadBreakers table hosts will come ready with questions and facilitation skills - you come ready to discuss! **I've never attended a BreadBreakers event before - what is BreadBreakers?** BreadBreakers is a community where neighbors from all different beliefs and backgrounds can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** Most frequently, we do this through the ancient practice of breaking bread around a common dining table. But we're more than just a discussion group - we're a movement to heal our world's broken discourse and forge togetherness in a time of isolation and loneliness. **Through the sacred act of just "being" together, we're working to rebuild the town square, one table (or book club) at a time.** BreadBreakers is a religiously inclusive by Restoration United Methodist Church in Reston, VA. All faiths, beliefs, and stripes are welcomed, and our leadership and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.

BreadBreakers Community Dinner: Dialogue Across Divides
BreadBreakers Community Dinner: Dialogue Across Divides
**In a time of division and isolation, come be part of the community that's rebuilding the town square, one table at a time.** In BreadBreakers, we use the common space of the dining table to have conversations where neighbors can **hear, be heard, and know one another.** If you're hungry for good discourse and deeper community, join us for a Community Dinner in Reston and help blaze the trail to a healthier, more connected society and democracy. Here’s how it works: For just two hours, multiple tables of people set aside the need to "win" and instead focus on sharing, listening, and connecting. Guided by experienced table hosts, we'll tell our stories, try to understand each other, and practice being in community with those with different views or backgrounds. **At this dinner, participants will get to choose between three different topics, including some current events.** Topics could range from the political, to the spiritual, to the philosophical, to the off-the-wall - but no matter which table you choose to sit at, you can be sure it'll be like no dinner conversation you've had before! You can also **suggest a topic** by emailing us at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com. Food will be provided for free. For those who wish to provide a donation to help fund BreadBreakers, you can [give here](https://pushpay.com/g/restorationrestonumc?fnd=pO6G-N7oO7FH7Mp1u-x6mA&fndv=Lock&r=No&lang=en&src=pcgl) or at the event. We'll have vegetarian and gluten-free options available. If you have any additional dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease, vegan, etc.) please let us know at BreadBreakersInfo@gmail.com so that we can implement the appropriate food handling procedures. **Join us, invite a friend, and be a part of the movement to mend our fractured society and normalize a better way of talking with one another.** BreadBreakers, an initiative by [Restoration United Methodist Church](https://restorationreston.org/breadbreakers) in Reston, VA, is a religiously inclusive community. All faiths and all stripes are welcomed. Our leadership, volunteer team, and community include people who attend Restoration and people who don't.
