On Quantizing General Relativity
Title: On Quantizing General Relativity
Date: Jan 17 2026 Noon -14:00 EST
Summary: Why has a century passed without anyone developing a persuasive, broadly accepted, and experimentally predictive unified theory of quantum mechanics and general relativity? In this presentation, Terry will begin by explaining how Einstein’s post-1911 adoption of the Minkowski concept of an infinitely smooth spacetime fabric destroyed any possibility of such a merger by making spacetime infinitely classical, and thus inherently incompatible with the quantum reality of all forms of matter and energy. Next, Terry will discuss how the concept of infinitely smooth spacetime, in combination with similarly cost-indifferent field theories, wasted a century of theorizing by loading empty space with non-existent, asymptotically infinitely energies that exist only briefly in very-high-energy physics. Finally, Terry will discuss how recognizing that quantum observation is nothing more than acceleration. Terry reframes general relativity as the remnant of relationships remaining after massive observation creates localized instances of spacetime.
Speaker: Terry Bollinger is a computer scientist with BS, MS, and professional degrees from the Missouri University of Science and Technology.
Systemic Constellation Workshop with Randy Goldberg
**A systemic constellation (also called Family Constellations) is a therapeutic group experience designed to uncover and resolve hidden family dynamics that may be influencing a person’s life.**
Rooted in the work of Bert Hellinger, this method operates on the principle that unresolved traumas and patterns from previous generations can manifest in an individual’s relationships, health, or emotions.
During the workshop, a facilitator guides participants as they explore these systemic entanglements using representatives—other group members who stand in for family members or key components of their issue. Through this process, participants gain deep insights into their energy field systems, fostering healing and a sense of resolution.
These workshops provide a safe and supportive environment for self-discovery and transformation. Participants often experience profound emotional shifts as they witness and engage in the unfolding dynamics of their lives stories. By bringing unconscious loyalties, unresolved grief, or burdens to light, Family Constellation work helps individuals break free from limiting patterns, fostering greater harmony, self-acceptance, and a renewed sense of belonging. Whether attending as an active participant or as a representative, individuals often leave with a deeper understanding of their own lives and relationships.

Social Sips & Bites Walk: From Alexandria to National Harbor!
Join Social Sips & Bites for an evening walk filled with a great company, and beautiful waterfront views.
The Plan
We’ll meet at Jones Point Park in Alexandria, VA, then walk along the Alexandria waterfront, taking in the charming holiday scenery. From there, we’ll cross the Woodrow Wilson Bridge, which offers spectacular views of the Potomac River and the city skyline at night.
Our destination: National Harbor in Oxon Hill, Maryland - a winter wonderland glowing with Christmas lights, and holiday displays.
At the Harbor
Once we arrive, we’ll stroll through the decorated streets, check out the giant Christmas tree, and enjoy the festive atmosphere. You can grab a drink or snack from one of the many nearby restaurants and bars, or just relax and enjoy the show with the group.

• Distance: About 3 miles (each way) — easy to moderate pace
• Return: Walk or rideshare/carpool options available back to Alexandria
What to Bring
• Comfortable walking shoes
• Warm layers and gloves (it can get chilly by the water)
• A small flashlight or phone light for the trail

Friday Night Fitness Skate
Join us for the Friday Night Fitness Skate! A 12 or 8 mile fitness skate that skates the same route each week so you will know the route and pavement hazards (since it is dark) and be able to work on form, endurance or speed as the cold wind is pushing against you! ;) The route has nice long stretches of uninterrupted skating, open roads with very few cars and the regroups are short and infrequent.
We will meet at Freedom Plaza at 7pm as long as it is not raining, snowing and the pavement is not wet or icy. We’ll warm up with a skate to the Capital and then skate along the mall and museums to the National Monument. We will then head to the Lincoln Memorial through the World War II Memorial.
From the Lincoln we will proceed to Haynes Point down Ohio Drive with the option to take the 3 mile Haynes Point loop (12 mile total skate) or practice stops or stunts at the regroup spot while others skate the loop (8.5 mile total skate.)
The skate is mostly flat on good pavement with a small slope coming down from the Washington Monument and a 40 yard small slop from the Lincoln to Ohio Drive and a couple patches here and there.
The wind can be very strong and cold especially on Ohio Drive and Haynes Point as we skate adjacent to the water.
Please feel free to jazz up your gear with lights, I wear a helmet bike light (since it is pretty dark) and a set of body lights. Most of the regulars skate with lighted wheels for fun! Wear your lights so you have fun, can see and be seen!
In case of bad weather, I will update this post via the comment section around 6pm on Friday.
Of course, all skating is at your own risk.
Hope you will come join us!

Transit Techies #36: Colin Miller (Subway Builder) & Greg Feliu (Busiest Subway)
**IMPORTANT NOTICE:** This meetup is sunsetting, and *this will be the last event being announced here*. **To continue to receive updates to Transit Techies NYC, subscribe to our [Luma calendar here](https://luma.com/transittechies).**
Talks will start at 6:30pm, and we'll mingle over light bites and refreshments before and afterwards.

**Speakers**
**Colin Miller** mostly grew up in Austin, Texas, where he developed an early interest in software and maps. After his freshman year of college, he launched his first startup, Redistricter, which took off far faster than expected. He left school and moved to New York to pursue it full-time.
A year later, he created *Subway Builder*, a hyper-realistic game that lets players design subway systems from scratch while navigating real-world constraints and costs. The game simulates millions of commuters using Census and Redistricter data, powered by the same pathfinding algorithms people rely on to get to work. Your job is to design a route network that gets the most people to their destination as fast as possible.
—
**Greg Feliu** is a data engineer and analyst focused on transportation analytics, with projects ranging from modeling subway–bus transfers to clustering NYC subway stations by ridership. Drawing on public ridership data and GTFS schedules, he builds minimal-assumption models to estimate ridership on each subway line, combining data modeling with subject-matter expertise to reveal how New Yorkers move through the system with *The Busiest Subway Lines in NYC, Ranked*.

The Metro Figure 8
Mimic the great skaters who gracefully carve an ephemeral numeral “8” in the ice—but instead of skates, use the steel wheels of the Metro system!
We’ll start at Metro Center, make our way to Ft. Totten on the Red line, transfer (in a very cool way) to the Yellow or Green lines; then go down to L’Enfant Plaza, where we’ll switch to the Blue, Orange or Silver lines to take us home to Metro Center and complete our ”8”.
Then off to Potbelly Sandwich Shop for lunch and reflection on our feat!
Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy Center Star Party
Members of the public are invited to view the wonders of the universe through the telescopes of NOVAC volunteers at the Smithsonian's Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA. Have a cosmic question? One of NOVAC's astronomers or museum staff will be happy to help you. As the sky gets dark, be prepared to enjoy the wonders of the night sky!
Don't forget to dress warmly. Please check the weather forecast. For lighting, cover a flashlight in red cellophane (the darker the better). Bring along water to keep hydrated.
Note: This outdoor event is weather-dependent and may be cancelled because of significant cloud cover or precipitation.
