When you design function APIs, how do you choose parameter types? C++ offers many ways to pass objects to functions, but choosing the right parameter types for an API often still feels like guesswork. We learn the mechanics and rules, yet rarely step back to ask the fundamental questions that should guide our decisions. In this talk, we revisit parameter passing from first principles. Starting from intent rather than language features, we view a function call as a negotiation between caller and callee, with ownership and mutability as the two key questions at the boundary. This perspective reframes value categories as evidence, demystifies std::move, and leads to a practical decision guide for API design. The goal is to provide a mental model that helps both learners and experienced developers reason more confidently about C++ code. The selected title is typically a "neglected gem" that most of us discover together for the first time. Individual taste is not a criterion and all participants are expected to put the interests of the group as a whole above personal preference or prejudice. In this sense, the emphasis is on openness, exploration, and surprise. Each screening is followed by an in-depth group discussion, led and mediated by the curator. Rather, it's a socially responsible, intellectual engagement, involving an organic approach to group study of film language, philosophy, art, history, politics, and technology. We are an international group and are devoted to including expats and discussing films each month in English, though you need not necessarily have seen the film in English. For this month, we will be discussing the new Brendan Fraser film, Rental Family. This poignant dramedy, set in Japan, follows a man who runs an unusual business renting himself out to play roles in other people’s lives — as a father, husband, or family member — for those who need someone to fill an emotional void. The film will release on January 8th in Austria but looks to have a limited run before that. Do some research to make sure you can find a screening and see it in time. DC Anime Club will be hosting Free Screening of Marvels Wonder Man on Thursday January 29, 2026 at 9pm at the crescendo 8101a US-29, Falls Church, VA 22042 Marvel’s Wonder Man Struggling actors [Simon Williams](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simon_Williams_(Marvel_Cinematic_Universe) "Simon Williams (Marvel Cinematic Universe)") and [Trevor Slattery](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trevor_Slattery "Trevor Slattery") try to earn roles in the remake of the superhero film *Wonder Man*. We hope to see you there. Cosplay (Costume play) is encouraged as long as you don’t bring any prop weapons and keep the cosplay family friendly. HYBRID EVENT, VIRTUAL SPEAKER In this talk, Sean Hoar will explore the transformative journey of AI’s role in modern software engineering, from rapid prototyping (“Vibe Coding”) to strategic AI integration by skilled practitioners. It clarifies the distinctions between AI-assisted, AI-enabled, and practitioner-led approaches, offering insights into how developers can effectively adapt to and harness AI tools. The presentation also highlights recent advancements and practical strategies for leveraging AI in daily workflows and long-term development.

DC Anime Club will be hosting an Anime Swap Meet on at Martin Luther King Jr Memorial Library 901 G St NW Washington, DC 20001 4th Floor Room 401. A swap meet is where people 'meet' to 'swap' their unwanted items for something else they may want - without paying for anything. The focus will be on anime, manga, comic, and video game related items.

Join local video game developers, artists, musicians and writers to talk about the art and science of game development. Bring a device and demo your game, talk shop, find like minded folks to join forces with, have a snack or a beverage among new friends.
