This is a project based course and we encourage learners to bring a small wood item to the first class. You can bring a 60s book-rack, a small occasional table, a simple chair or a shabby wood box. These objects can be wobbly, scratched or dented, and maybe a few bits missing- they can date from 19th to mid 20th century. Work on your own piece while learning the skills you need along the way. We will show you how to fix the wobbles and make joint repairs and how to repair lost or flaky veneers. You will also have an introduction to wood finishes from modern stains, varnishes and waxes to classic French polishing. This is a great way to get stuck into the practice of restoration. We will guide you through the process of assessing a potential project, learning about its construction and how to bring a sad relic back to shining glory. Kent Downs, beginning at Borough Green and looping through peaceful woodland, rolling countryside and some of the area’s prettiest villages. This 16 km route offers a wonderful mix of scenery: ancient woods, tucked-away hamlets, historic farms and quiet rural lanes. It’s a perfect day out for walkers who enjoy steady hills, good variety underfoot and a real sense of journey across the landscape. From here we continue on field paths and bridleways, making our way to the charming village of Basted with its millpond and peaceful valley setting. The trail undulates through the Wealden landscape, offering interest and variety without being overly steep. Time to get on tracks and get on an hour train journey to those gorgeous woods not too far from London near Farnham and Waverley. This is going to be a proper forestry hike just as we like them. Forest lovers, cinema and tv series fans, be aware... Filming location for blockbuster movies such as Robin Hood Prince of thieves, 3 Harry Potter movies, Thor, The Avengers, and another 40 more and counting or series such as the Witcher, these millennial forests such as Bourne Woods are simply a jewel of nature in the Southern part of England. If you like a walk in the woods, this is the one you want to join as we will be in the middle of the forest or the heath for most of the trip. The hike will be average, a few ups and downs but nothing too strenuous, it is about 10miles but I can make it longer if you wish as there are acres and acres of woods, if you wish we can even push to the ruins of Waverley Abbey before we make our way back to the station, our minds cleared by the fresh air of these magical woods.
