VSDC Movie Watch Party, Discussion, and Vegan Food
VSDC Movie Watch Party, Discussion, and Vegan Food
Join the [Veg Society of DC (VSDC)](vsdc.org) for a pro-animal/vegan-themed Movie Watch Party on Saturday, March 21 at 3:00 pm in Fairfax VA. Socializing with vegan food beforehand and discussion about the movie afterwards is planned. THIS MONTH'S MOVIE WATCH PARTY WILL BEGIN AT 3 PM. This month's movie is Wicked: For Good (Part 2). *Wicked: For Good* explores the untold story behind the witches of Oz, following two unlikely friends whose choices, values, and courage shape the world around them. It’s a powerful, visually stunning story about identity, loyalty, and what it truly means to be “good.” The movie is 2 hours and 17 minutes long. The VSDC member hosts’ home in Fairfax has a small home theater that can accommodate around 20 people. This regular event is a fun way to learn, discuss, and meet vegans and vegan-curious people (Thanks to Mindy Kursban and David Kwiatkowski for hosting!). FEE: The $12 fee will cover the hosts' expenses for the event, including food, beverages, and other associated costs. If there are any proceeds beyond these costs, which we don't expect, they will go towards VSDC's work to fulfill its mission. In order to ensure the success of the evening and limit late cancellations, **the fee is refundable until 5 days before the event. [NOTE the fee increase due to the increase in the cost of food]** BECAUSE THERE IS A FEE FOR THIS EVENT, MEETUP DOES NOT ALLOW FOR A WAITLIST ONCE THE RSVPs ARE FULL. IF IT IS FULL, IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU CHECK MEETUP OCCASIONALLY TO SEE IF ANYONE HAS CHANGED THEIR RSVP. FOOD: For our afternoon movie watch party, we’ll have mostly snack-style foods. Feel free to bring any vegan food or beverages to share. WHO: All VSDC and Meetup members are invited. Bringing a non-vegan friend is encouraged. WHEN: Saturday, March 21 **at 3:00 pm**\*\*\*. We'll eat and enjoy social time together first and begin watching the movie around 3:30. Please note this movie is longer than usual, so you can give yourself enough time to stay till the end. WHERE: The home is in Fairfax VA 22033, near Inova Fair Oaks Hospital. It is 8 miles from the closest metro at either Vienna or Reston (Uber or Lyft would be necessary). **For safety and security reasons, the exact location will be emailed privately via Meetup about 2 days in advance to those who have rsvp'd Yes.** Please make sure your email is current in Meetup, your Meetup settings allow organizer messages, and check your spam if you don't receive the message. PARKING: There is plenty of free parking within a 3-minute walk of the home. \*You must register via this page to attend the event.\* A Pay Pal account is required to pay the $12. Because there is a cost for the event, Meetup doesn't have a waitlist for the movie. **VSDC: More Than A Meetup** We are delighted to have you as part of The Veg Society of DC Vegan Meetup group, and we look forward to seeing you at our events. · Sita Sings the Blues · by Nina Paley @ Mary Riley Styles Library
· Sita Sings the Blues · by Nina Paley @ Mary Riley Styles Library
Based on the *Ramayana*, a Sanskrit epic from roughly 500BC, this animated feature is as close to the work of one person as possible. Writer/director/animator Nina Paley starts with the classic tale of Sita, a long-suffering woman in a world where men deny much to her, demand much of her, and take much from her. She’s married to and deeply in love with the mighty hunter and warrior Rama. The heroine remains resilient and hopeful even as she occasionally sings about how she’d like things to be a bit better. Interspersed with this story are scenes from modern times based on Paley’s own experiences, and the visuals – animated in a variety of styles – are accompanied by songs from the 1920s. The narrative is clear, the conflicts well defined, and the visuals wildly imaginative. The result is a dazzling and easy-to-follow adventure despite the many characters and locations. If ever a film could be called Oddball Required Viewing, this is it! ■ Title — *Sita Sings the Blues* ■ Director — Nina Paley ■ Cast — Annette Hanshaw, Aseem Chhabra, Bhavana Nagulapally ■ Unrated, suitable for general audiences ■ ©2008 \| 1h 22m \| Animation\, Comedy\, Fantasy\, Music\, Musical\, Romance

NOVA Horror Club Discussion: Hideshi Hino's Mermaid in a Manhole (1988)
**NOTE: This is *NOT* a screening, please watch the movie before the discussion.** **CONTENT WARNING: Disease, mutilation, abortion.** **This film contains extreme body horror and prolonged depictions of illness and bodily decay. It also includes references to pregnancy loss and a graphic act involving the removal of a fetus from a woman’s body. Viewer discretion is strongly advised.** Please read the original manga ahead of the dicussion: https://mangadex.org/chapter/bf397fc1-17bc-4fa1-8cd7-2cfd35f8170c Hideshi Hino's *Mermaid in a Manhole* is body horror stripped of bravado. When a lonely artist encounters a dying mermaid trapped in an underground sewer, he attempts to care for her — documenting her condition as her body deteriorates in disturbing and intimate ways. What begins as a strange act of compassion transforms into a bleak meditation on decay, obsession, and environmental collapse. Blending body horror with tragic romance, the film replaces shock-for-shock’s-sake with an atmosphere of sickness and inevitability that seeps into every frame.
