Tue. Cafe Writing/Sharing Session
We are writers of all levels – beginners to published.
And we meet at STARBUCK at IFC (P2 Shop2097-2098, International Finance Centre), Central for fun writing and sharing sessions!
We all write a one-sentence prompt, then each select one at random. We write something based on the prompt for 45 minutes, after which, we share our work with each other and discuss as desired. Of course, sharing is optional but encouraged. (Feedback is always polite and respectful.)
Alternatively, you can bring your own project(s) to work on in the company of fellow writers (published and yet-to-be published). You can share your project(s), too, if you want.
It's all about creativity and productivity in a supportive environment!
Any questions, just reach out to our organizers through Meetup.

Children's Literature for Adults
Want to immerse yourself in books, but can't find the time?
You've come to the right place!
**The What:**
We will start small, take baby steps (quite literally!) and peruse picture books.
**The How:**
Structure:
\- We will go through 2 or 3 picture books in one sitting\. I will be bringing the books with me so you don't need to have the read the book prior to coming\.
\- We will follow this up with a discussion on the content\, theme\, and illustrations in the book\. This will be a free\-flowing conversation and we'll ensure equal air\-time for all participants\.
\- Since these are picture books\, you do not need proficiency in English to enjoy them\.
We'll go through these in our upcoming circle:
(i) Don't Do it for Candy
(ii) Lost & Found
**The Why:**
Still on the fence about the event? Here's an article that gives you 10 reasons why you should join.
**The Where:**
TBD
January discussion - "The Measure" by Nikki Erlick
Our book for January 2026 is *The Measure,* by Nikki Erlick.
*It seems like any other day. You wake up, drink a cup of coffee, and head out.*
*But today, when you open your front door, waiting for you is a small wooden box. The contents of this mysterious box tell you the exact number of years you will live.*
*In an instant, the world is thrust into a collective frenzy. Where did these boxes come from? What do they mean? Is there truth to what they promise?*
*As society comes together and pulls apart, everyone faces the same shocking choice: Do they wish to know how long they’ll live? And, if so, what will they do with that knowledge?*
This month’s discussion will be held at Commaa in Sheung Wan on the 25th of January @ 2:00 pm. Please note: the café asks that for large groups, guests buy at least one beverage per person ($60 minimum). They have a selection of sweet treats, coffees, teas, and other drinks available for purchase.
After the discussion, we will choose the next book by group vote. Please bring your suggestions for future books!
BYOBook: non-fiction books presentations and discussion
This is a regular Bring-Your-Own-Book session, where participants share and present to the group non-fiction books they have read.
New members may sit in to hear and discuss others' presentations.
Usually a meeting takes around 2.5-3 hours. During this time we discuss 2 different books, roughly 1 hour per book.
Any non-fiction material: a book, documentary, or lecture or a part of it - anything with a title and an author and that contains some coherent ideas. Each presentation includes a summary (15-40 min) and discussion (accordingly).
The meeting will be either in a park or in a coffee shop, on HK side. The exact place to be confirmed with the attendees **by WhatsApp only**. I will / have sent the link to the WhatsApp group, please use the link.
Introvert friendly.
We have people from different countries, so while books can be in any language, the language of the meeting is English.
There is a fee of 20 HKD for the first timers to help funding the Meetup membership needed to run the group.
Do not hit "Attend" if you are not going to attend.
If you RSVPed, but there is anything preventing you from going to the meeting, remember to tell the host and/or update the RSVP as soon as possible.
But if you plan to attend, do hit "Attend", please :)))
No-shows are all silently noted with much disapproval and will be removed from the group.

**[ Optional activities ]**

Repetition & Patterns
Repetition is everywhere in the city — in motion, in habit, in design. It's the same shape, gesture, or element echoed again and again. Sometimes it’s choreographed — uniforms, queues, synchronized movement. Sometimes it’s accidental — a row of crates, a sea of matching umbrellas, three people checking their phones in the same posture.
Repetition brings structure to an image, but it also brings energy. And often, it's the **one thing that breaks the repetition** that makes the shot work — the one person out of line, the one object that doesn’t belong.
Patterns are an inevitable part of repetition. Repetition creates patterns, so at some juncture, you might find yourself thinking in terms of pattern—and thats okay.
### **What to look for:**
* People walking in sync, standing in formation, or mirroring gestures
* Matching outfits — uniforms, coordinated couples, or strangers dressed alike
* Rows of identical objects — bins, crates, chairs, signs, wheels, bikes
* Repeated signage — fonts, symbols, stickers
* Traffic or pedestrian flow — feet, wheels, umbrellas
* Accidental rhythm — three people on their phones, same haircut, same shoes
### **Tips:**
* **Zoom in** on the rhythm — isolate the repetition inside the frame
* **Shoot wide** to show scale and pattern from a distance
* **Wait** for the right moment — repetition in people often lasts just a beat
* **Look for the break** — the one thing that stands out in the pattern
* **Work with time** — repetition is often about timing, not just space
### **Bonus Challenge:**
Photograph a **sequence of three or more** repeated elements in motion — footsteps, gestures, or actions — and see if you can catch the rhythm in a single frame.
***
### **Meet:**
**Tsim Sha Tsui MTR Exit C2**, street level, 2:30PM sharp.
From there, explore the surrounding streets — all rich in crowds, symmetry, and urban rhythm.
### **Regroup:**
**Delaney’s Irish Pub**, basement of Mary Building, 71–77 Peking Road, TST. 4:30PM. Please stay a while to share your experience, thoughts, and maybe some images while grabbing a drink (or more).
**After all this:**
Please post 5-7 of your images from the shoot. And PLEASE, be a participant in commenting on other images. Gut reactions and general comments are always welcome. It's part of the process and valuable for your fellow photographers.
