Social Media Surgery: Hands on social media advice & help

Do you need a hand in learning social media basics, like posting photos on Facebook or writing a tweet? Or maybe you have questions about how to track the clicks on your links, or use Facebook Insights? Or maybe you want to chat with someone about your social media strategy? Or maybe you’re a social media pro yourself, and want to share your experience with others?

This month we’re doing something a bit different: a social media surgery. Started in the UK, the basic idea of a social media surgery is that it’s an informal event where anyone in the community with questions about how to use social media (“patients”) can come and sit down with someone who is more experienced in that area (“surgeons”, aka “doctors” as we would say) and get friendly, personal advice.

On hand to help answer your questions will be several of the TechSoup Canada staff who have experience using platforms and tools such as Facebook, Twitter, Tweetdeck, Hootsuite, Bit.ly, Pinterest, Google+ and Tumblr.

It’s a bit like an unconference in that what happens at the event depends on who comes and what they want to learn about - so come with your questions. Anyone else who feels they have knowledge to share as a “surgeon” is also welcome and highly encouraged to attend. And because of the nature of the event, you never know what you might end up learning from one of the other participants!

Since there is no presentation, we won’t be livestreaming this event.

If you’re curious to learn more about Social Media Surgeries, you can find more info here: http://socialmediasurgery.com/ and here http://www.netsquared.org/blog/social-media-got-you-down-try-surgery

Donation price: $5.00 (Pay in cash at the door. Receipts available. Helps us provide yummy snacks & keep these events running :))

This was my first meeting with the group. thanks for the opportunity to provide feedback.

What worked well: people were engaged, eager to share their learnings and help others. While the group facilitators DID encourage people to get up and move around (however, our table stayed put, and no one joined us, and I noticed the same behaviour across the room - too polite to leave the small table).

Even better if: The facilitators had provided a 5 min pre-amble as to the topics that people had submitted online- ie. we anticipate discussing these 4 things - so if your table wasn't getting to that you would have had "permission" to move. We had very nice people - but NOONE with much experience to be SURGEON - so our group flailed a bit. Could have facilitated 15 min per session, then invited people to get up and change tables - would have resulted in more learning and more networking. Please consider these ideas...I only met 4 new people out of a large group of possibilities!

This is such a great idea! I wish I could join you, but I have a scheduling conflict. I will definitely be recommending this event though, and I look forward to hearing how it goes.
