The Toronto Karaoke Meetup group was created to get people together who love great music and love being a participant. Forget Canadian/American Idol. We don't judge here. (But I'll tell ya some of the members here put American Idol participants to SHAME).
Karaoke is a word formed from putting two Japanese words together. "Kara" (meaning "empty) and "Oke", short for Okesutura meaning "orchestra". So Karaoke means "empty orchestra" or orchestra without the voice. Having worked in Japan myself, I've see first hand how people use karaoke to relieve stress and just "let it all out". As in most Japanese recreational activities, the most important part of karaoke is not being a master or virtuoso, but in participation and sharing in something with your fellows. (friends or co-workers or both).
Originally the group meetings were in public karaoke venues which are fun but people tend to have to wait forever in such places to get to sing. We now hold meetings in private rooms in Karaoke Boxes to allow more participation from our members (and give the more shy participants a bit more confidence). Its all about having fun meeting friends & making great music (and perhaps partaking in the occationally beer in between). There is no criteria except the desire to share in merrymaking through music.
Recently we've had problems with MC's who may not like unfavorable reviews on karaoke venues that may be linked here. If you are a Karaoke MC or venue owner don't sign up to advertise billboard style ads as its not allowed. You may post a link to information of your venue (NOT IN YOUR PROFILE) or general information directly on a forum. No commercial endorsements may be posted. If you have doubts, ask the organizer. If you have comments on reviews this site links to you may give them in a polite manner. NO FLAMING ALLOWED! Flamers will have their profiles REMOVED.
Recently we've had issues with competing groups posting without asking permission. If you are a competing group and want to let people know on our site. Ask permission. You may be surprised. while we are required to look after the interest of our group, we're happy to keep our members informed.
