Who WAS Vivian Maier:

Vivian Dorothea Maier (February 1, 1926 – April 21, 2009) was an American street photographer, who was born in New York City and spent much of her childhood in France. She worked for forty years as a nanny in Chicago, Illinois. She took more than 150,000 photographs, primarily of people and architecture of New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, although she traveled and photographed worldwide.

Maier's photographs remained unknown, and many of her films remained undeveloped, until her boxes of possessions were auctioned off after her passing. A young Chicago historian and collector, John Maloof, purchased approximately 100,000 to 150,000 negatives, over 3,000 prints, hundreds of rolls of film, home movies, audio tape interviews, and various other items, representing roughly 90 percent of Vivian’s work. The collection is the physical legacy of Vivian’s intense passion to document the many things that caught her eye in the world she encountered. Maier’s photographs have been exhibited in the USA, Europe and Asia and have been featured in many articles throughout the world thanks to John Maloof's by-chance findings.

“Well, I suppose nothing is meant to last forever. We have to make room for other people. It’s a wheel. You get on, you have to go to the end. And then somebody has the same opportunity to go to the end and so on.” – Vivian Maier

Background about Vivian Maier:

It is suggested to see the Movie "Finding Vivian Maier" as it has great background information about Vivian but also all of the interesting information that John Maloof was able to find out about Vivian after he purchased his first box of negatives.

There is only ONE Theatre in the City at the moment playing this movie.
It is playing at The Kingsway Theatre,

I saw it, it was a great movie! It made me know more about her background of life and the reason why her film was not developed let alone having her being noticed as an artist until after she passed.

About the Meetup:

In the last few days there has been a Gallery in Toronto who is displaying some of the amazing street photography captures of childern from Vivian's past. There is no charge to go to this event at the Stephen Bulger Gallery. Special to Toronto Photographic Meetup Group Members we will get the chance to have a presentation from the Sales Assistant and Q & A.

Wow! We have another FULL event for Friday night! If you aren't able to make it, please RSVP "No" as we have quite a few members on the waiting list. I have scheduled a Street Photography Meetup for Saturday August 23. We will start in the studio with a Presentation about Street Photography, we will look at some pros of street photography, learn about our Ontario Photographers Laws and then think about some tips on how to get the image you want at the RIGHT time.

We will then be practicing what you have learnt during the presentation at St Lawerence Market during the afternoon.

If you are interested in this event check out the posting at :

Enjoy your day and I hope to see you tomorrow!
