Week of Adventure in the Davis Mountains

  • to

  • Needs a location

  • PLACEHOLDER. TENTATIVE DATE. Date range is expected to change once Davis Mountain Preserves announces their "open weekend" for August 2017, usually at the start of January 2017.

This should be an adventure-packed week of exploring the West Texas landscape and many nearby towns like Fort Davis, Alpine and Marfa.

My proposal is to camp at the preserve during that opening weekend (Friday-Sunday) and then move to Davis Mountains State Park campground or Indian Lodge for the next few days (ah showers! toilets!). If anyone is interested in backpacking, I would really like to do backcountry backpacking at Davis Mountains State Park for at least one night during the week. I am basically proposing a relocation of different park settings for different camping opportunities in the Davis Mountains area, but if that doesn't interest anyone: Davis Mountains State Park campground is pretty reliable, plus with RV hookups, and the Indian Lodge is super nice but sells out quickly (sometimes a year in advance), and the nearby Fort Davis Inn & RV Park is a good "cheap" motel with a fridge and microwave.

Do you want it to be? ;) I'm pretty open for discussion, based on who wants to go.

I am open to it being lodging, camping, backpacking, or a mix of all of the above. Since it's a whole week, I'd be inclined to do a mix of camping (at the Davis Mountain Preserves on their open camping weekend Fri-Sun), followed with lodging at a local Fort Davis hotel (showers, etc) for a few days while exploring the wider area, like Alpine, Balmorrhea, etc, then doing a little backpack trip for two days at a primitive area at Davis Mountains State Park. That's where my mind is currently at. I think anyone who is totally turned off by camping could still do a lot of my preferred activities on this trip while staying in lodging.

Or they could even stay in an RV at Davis Mountains SP or a nearby RV park.
