Navigating digitally has become extremely popular in recent years. Desktop and smartphone apps have incredible features, allowing us to plan detailed hikes and travel safely in the backcountry, but it's essential to know their advantages and limitations, as well as when each is the right tool for the job.
This is a 3-hour hands-on interactive virtual class where students learn the best apps to use for different aspects of trip planning and while we're out in the woods. We then focus on CalTopo, the best desktop and smartphone app for trip planning and tracking ourselves in the woods. One by one, we’ll go over all the incredible features and tools, with students walking away with an overall working knowledge and confidence to plan hikes and backpacking trips on their own. You will also learn how to share your routes with loved ones so they can track you live in the woods as you hike. For weeks after the course, students will be emailed an optional weekly short CalTopo exercise to do on their own to reinforce the skills they learned.
Additionally, TrailBounders now have the opportunity to take the follow-up course called Digital App Hike Planning 2. It includes new skills and reinforces what we learn in this class with a 3-hour exercise where we plan a backpacking trip from start to finish utilizing multiple apps for what each one does best.
Minimum Age: 12 years old - the minor(s) and a parent/guardian must all be paid registered participants.
