IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT OUR GROUP updated OCTOBER 16th, 2015

We are the OTTAWA TRAVEL MEETUP GROUP
We are the largest Travel Meetup in the National Capital Region. The most important thing to know about our members is that we are an open and fun crowd. Come and know that you'll be welcomed, whether you are a seasoned traveler or are just now feeling the symptoms from that travel bug you've caught. You'll find friendly and interesting people that are more than willing to talk with you about their experiences. Plus, you can get some great tips on a future trip. Who knows? You might even find a travel partner!

Who we are not
• This is not a dating group. There's nothing wrong with singles groups, but we are not one of them. This is about meeting people that like to travel. It's great if people get along at our meetings and end up dating, but please don't join if this is your sole motivation.
• This is not a travel agency.
• Our current organizer, Sheila Gallant-Halloran, is a travel professional .

Do we organize official OTMG tours?
Historically no, but there has been interest expressed since I've taken over as organizer, and we are starting to do that.

How do I find other members to travel with?
"As the new organizer of the group I am experimenting with how best to help members find others to travel with as this is a frequent request. Working within the structure of The Meetup software, scheduling a Meetup seems to be the best way for now, but this may change as things develop. For example, the last half-dozen or so solo travel club meetings have worked extremely well to introduce members to each other; and have resulted in many folks making new friends, and travelling together.

Members who would like to post a trip will need at a minimum to be a member in good standing , have a good attendance record, be a positive & active contributor to the group etc....

To post a trip for consideration you will need to create a "Suggested Meetup" and fill in all the fields with as much detail as possible. Once you complete the form and submit it, the organizer will be notified and will review it for approval.

Approval of trip postings will be at the sole discretion of the organizer. Trips that are approved and posted maybe taken down at anytime.

With 1200 members it may take time before your trip is approved. Remember that this is an experiment, there will be pros & cons, hits & misses, I will do my best to make it work by changing things as we go." Sheila - organizer

Travel Agents
Besides the organizer, we have a couple of travel agents who are members of this group, and they bring a lot of knowledge and experience to the group. We do discourage invasive promotion and advertising, but this doesn't mean you can't discuss your travel plans with one of our agent members. What is not allowed is a travel agent, or a member of the group, without any interest in our group trying to use this site as a vehicle to promote their business or their personal agenda.

Spam
We are a prime target for marketing. We have decided not to allow any posts on our Message Boards that are clearly spam. We don't have a way of keeping e-mail spam being sent to you, but if you report to us that a Travel member is sending you unwanted e-mail, we'll act as far as our Organizer abilities allow.

Meetup Fee:
Members will pay a $2.00 at the door when entering the monthly "The Tell Your Travel Story" Meetup. Bring your 'toonie', we may not always have change. One off events will be priced individually but are often free or cost very little to attend.

Members are permitted to bring 1 guest only to a Meetup. There is a 'guest fee' of $2.00 which must be paid at door. Guests must be accompanied by the member who RSVPed. Members who RSVPed but can not attend must go on to The Meetup page and change their RSVP status to 'No'. The system will automatically offer the space to the next person on the waiting list

Attendance Etiquette "No Shows are No Fun!"

Each month we have at least 4+ people No Show and 30+ people waitlisted. In order to make sure the 4 vacant seats are not wasted please cancel your rsvp no later than 3pm the day of the meetup to allow waitlisted people enough notice to come.

No Shows will not be able to rsvp for the next month's meetup, ie if you No Show in May, you will not be able to rsvp for June, but will be able to rsvp again for July, August, September etc...

When someone cancels The Meetup software automatically confirmed the next person on the waiting list , right up until 5:30 pm the day of the meeting. We hope the newly confirmed person can change their plans last minute and join us, but if they can't they will not be penalized

Please include a photo in your profile. If there is already a member with the same first name, please add the 1st letter of your last name or some other identifier such as "Jennifer the fabulous".

Rating the Meetup
Our monthly Traveler-to-Traveler "Tell Your Travel Story" Meetups are done by our own members - and we are all amateurs. You can feel secure in knowing that we encourage a supportive and welcoming atmosphere. This is a fun group. We are here because we WANT to see your pictures and hear about your travel experiences. If anyone would like to make a presentation but are not sure how to get started, please contact us.

Other presentations are organized for information, and travel suppliers are often invited by the organizer on one-off set ups. Solo travel club meetings are semi-regular gatherings struck by the organizer as well, and can involve travel suppliers and/or social gatherings. In addition, other social gatherings and outings will be struck - e.g., movie nights, Christmas socials, etc.

NEW - we regularly feature non-member presenters, for example, a National Geographic underwater cinematographer who is visiting Ottawa. These Meetup will be on a separate date from our traveler-to-traveler "Tell Your Own Story" monthly meeting (as are the info gatherings/ supplier presentations, solo travel club meetings, and social gatherings/ outings).

We will post our sponsor's logo on our web site, include their name and telephone number, plus a direct link to their web-site. We will also display their logo at group events. We ask all members to support our sponsors.

Where and When do we meet
Our monthly member to member tell us your travel story always meet at the Foolish Chicken Restaurant every 3rd Tuesday of each month. *Special one off meetings may be held in different locations. For example, the solo travel club meetings often alternate between west end, downtown, and east end venues - such as Ale Amberwood, Heart & Crown, and Cafe Latte Cino. Members are always encouraged to reward our venues with their patronage.
