Why ROOPKUND: The trail to Roopkund is one of those rare ones which have a perfect mix of just about everything. From deep dense forests to vast open meadows. From magnificent views to early morning snow and ice climbs. Roopkund, no wonder, makes for one of the most celebrated treks in India. Resting at an altitude of 15,750 Ft, Roopkund is also famous for the grand mystery surrounding the presence of human skeletons on the final trail leading up to the lake. Many documentaries around this subject have been made and the lake continues to attract many trekkers as well as archaeologists to this date.
Apart from the mystery, the trek is also a favourite among trekkers because of its terrain that changes everyday until the final ascent to Junargali. Although the trek is popular, the trekkers hiking this trail must understand the need to be physically and mentally prepared for the grand adventure. The risk of AMS significantly increases with the gain in altitude through the trek. The trek demands its hiker to be well prepared, informed and be responsible to enjoy the most of it.
PS: With popularity, this trek has experienced an influx of trekkers. We request our readers / hikers to learn the basics of responsible and green hiking habits so that we are able to preserve and respect the beauty of the trek.
