First Saturday "Succotash Soiree" Vegan Potluck at Arcadia Lodge

The second Succotash Soiree will be taking place on Saturday, August 3rd. We had a wonderful time last month and we hope that this next one will be just as lively and delicious! This month's theme is the book "The One Straw Revolution". Hopefully most of us have gotten around to reading it and are up for discussing the book. This event includes people who are not members of this meetup but they are also asked to bring vegan food.

Even if you didn't make it last time, but want to join us this month, you are welcome, but please try to read the book first, or at least watch several You Tube videos about Masanobu Fukuoka, so that you will be able to participate in the discussion.

Here the invitation from last month: Arcadia Lodge is planning to start a monthly gathering called "Saturday Succotash Soiree". The evenings will begin with a vegan potluck dinner and then we will congregate, with a glass of wine, or some other beverage in hand, to discuss a book or essay, which would have been announced in advance. Or perhaps we will watch a film together and then discuss that, or have an evening of story telling, or poetry reading. I hope that these evenings will lend themselves to thoughtful discussion, insights, laughter as well as the development of deepening friendships and a sense of community.

The first Succotash Soiree will take place on July 6th and the theme will be The One Straw Revolution by Masanobu Fukuoka, which is a great place to start if you are thinking about veganic farming (he's the real father of permaculture). Hereis an excerpt from a review from from NYBooks: "Call it “Zen and the Art of Farming” or a “Little Green Book” Masanobu Fukuoka’s manifesto about farming, eating, and the limits of human knowledge presents a radical challenge to the global systems we rely on for our food. At the same time, it is a spiritual memoir of a man whose innovative system of cultivating the earth reflects a deep faith in the wholeness and balance of the natural world. As Wendell Berry writes in his preface, the book “is valuable to us because it is at once practical and philosophical. It is an inspiring, necessary book about agriculture because it is not just about agriculture.”

Since the first soiree is coming up rather soon, that night we will begin the series with introductions, followed by watching some really short but sweet videos about Fukuoka and his work. When you arrive, you are invited to wander around our ten acre farm and meet the animals in residence, which include two donkeys and five alpacas, three dogs and a cat. Those who plan to participate should buy the book ASAP. We will continue the conversation on the first Saturday in August after everyone has read the book (it's not very long), and at that time I will introduce the next month's topic as well (topic suggestions will be welcome as will people volunteering to facilitate a discussion by, perhaps, introducing a subject that they are familiar with and excited about).

The evenings may end with some jamming on musical instruments on the front porch, or in the living room, so please feel free to bring along yours.
Please fell free to extend this invitation to folks you know who may be interested in attending Succotash, but please RSVP if you want to come, so I have an idea of how many folks plan to attend and we may have to limit it.

I will be able to make it after all. I'm not sure about the other two, maybe 3, but I think I'll be there.
