Meeting - The Hard Problem of Consciousness; BICEP2 Science Failure or Success?

What is the Hard Problem of Consciousness

There is great debate among experts in the fields of Philosophy of Mind, Psychology, Neuroscience and Cognitive Science, and Medicine regarding the nature of consciousness.

The question is how and why physical process in the brain give rise to subjective experience or "qualia". Mike will discuss some of the proposed theories and the problems and talk about why this topic is so fascinating.

A Science Failure or Success?

Recently, a south pole mission BICEP2 believed to have found gravitational waves from the inflation of the universe. However, recently, it was discovered that it could just have been dust.

What is the current state of these incredible gravitational waves? Come to find out.

Parking Directions:

From Varsity Dr, turn into the road that leads to the parking decks behind the WebAssign building. Park in the parking deck marked by the X and walk up the stairs to the back entrance as indicated. Someone will open the door for you. There is an entrance facing Main Campus Dr, but we may not have someone at that door, so please park in the parking deck in the back. There will be no towing after 6pm, and parking will be free and plentiful.

If you're interested in the phenomenon of consciousness, I recommend The Self Illusion by Bruce Hood

Mike talked about the brain humunculus. Epcot center had an animatronics show that was literally this called Cranium Command that I recall seeing when I was younger: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cranium_Command

Thanks Austin. Looks like it's not around anymore. I guess the homunculus retired.

Great meeting. Thank you Michael and Ramiro for two good presentations that were educational and thought provoking.

Here is a link to the one episode of the Brain Science podcast about one neuroscientist's (Robert Burton) interesting if somewhat pessimistic thoughts about the study of consciousness: http://hwcdn.libsyn.com/p/7/a/7/7a786f6ac229d47b/96-BSP-Burton.mp3?c_id=5628226&expiration=1414639242&hwt=efd8024e7c8260bd60b6d99f7a504828

Gary Edwards (philosopher and logician) debunks Spirit Science. Someone who calls himself "Spirit Science" or at least sells books on "Spirit Science" is full of woo. Gary calls BS.

Anyone want to meet for dinner beforehand?
How about 6? at Sammy's Tap & Grill
(2235 Avent Ferry Road, a couple of blocks north).
and we can discuss the sayings of the great philosophers:
"To Do is To Be" (Socrates)
"To Be is To Do" (Plato)
"Do Be, Do Be, Do" (Sinatra)

I remember now that the talk "starts at 7" rather than "start showing up at 7, to start a bit after".
      Move the dinner to 5:45-6:45

I'm afraid I have had a change in plans and will not be attending this session. I will watch for future opportunities to engage in discussions on this topic.

I hope to make it (sounds like a very interesting topic) but I'm not sure at this point

Mike (who is giving the presentation on consciousness): If you are interested, I know of several good podcasts relevant to this topic, if you are interested. Very much looking forward to hearing your talk!

If I can attend, I'll be late. Please post a contact meeting attendee phone number on the door.

Mike: Thought I had successfully posted this response yesterday: There are several episodes of "The Brain Science Podcast" (one my favorites) that might be interesting: 82, 84, 90, 96, 106, 108, 110...well, that's probably too much of a recommendation. At least episode 96 (about the book "The Skeptics Guide to the Mind"), which offers some interesting cautionary insights.
