1 Night Backpack on the Appalachian Trail

This trip is a cross-meetup with my other group the central jersey backpackers.  It should be a lot of fun, all experience levels are welcome.

Lets Meetup and Backpack 18 miles on the Appalachian Trail! We will be starting this trip in Duncannon, PA and hiking north towards PA 325. On Saturday we will park meet at the small parking lot off PA 325 Clarks Valley Rd, Dauphin, PA 17018. We'll leave a car there and then shuttle south towards Duncannon, PA where we'll hop on the trail and hike 11.3 miles to Peters Mountain Shelter.

This shelter is very large and can fit over 20 people, however you are invited to bring a tent in case the shelter is full (unlikely). We are entering thru-hiker season in PA and we'll want to be considerate to the long distance hikers moving through. The next morning we'll pack up and hike 6.7 miles towards PA 325, where we left our car. We'll most likely be done before noon, making it a pretty early day.

On this hike we'll get several nice views at Kinter View, Table Rock, and a view of the Susquehanna. Besides the initial incline coming out of Duncannon the terrain is pretty flat, although the AT in PA is famous for its rocky trails. We'll have a small decline coming back in to PA 325.

Things to Bring:
backpack
sleeping bag
sleeping pad
tent
warmer clothes for camp
food for lunch dinner breakfast and snacks

If you have any questions on gear or what to pack please don't hesitate to email me!

Hey everyone, I need recommendations from you. I am very excited about this trip but camping part kinda worries me. I have hiked a lot and am very comfortable with long distance hikes but I have no camping gear. I was able to find a tent from a friend and may find a sleeping bag but the tent is huuuuuuge (for 6 people) and soo heavy that I don't think it could be carried around. I'll be driving from cherry hill, NJ will have an empty car to pick up people on the way. I know there's going to be a cabin with an uncertainty of vacancy. I was wondering if there's a place that i can rent tent etc or just head for the cabin pray for a space. :) any recommendations?????

With 2 people on the waiting list please make sure that if you have signed up to go this weekend RSVP is correct and that you're definitely attending, I'd hate to have to turn people away and then have empty car seats come Saturday! Thanks :)

I can offer to drive, it's just that I have a small two door coupe and wouldn't be able to take many people.

Scott I am leaving from Philly. Technically my car seats five but with our packs I think I have a full car with you, me and Mali. I'll send you both an email with my info.

    Hey Guys,

I'm really excited to have the opportunity to get out for the first time this season. I live in Center City and was wondering if I could hitch a ride with someone? It would be great to talk a bit before we hit the trail, right? Cheers - Scott

Hey everyone! The trip is one week away and I want to make sure that everyone has everything that they need. A few things to note:

There will only be two places to fill water and one of them is listed as a weak spring so I encourage you all to bring bottles to carry at least two liters on your person. Also if you have some sort of purifier of pump please bring it. I have my squeeze filter but if multiple people are trying to fill all at once it would take quite some time.

Weather looks to be in the 70s during the day and 50s at night. Make sure you have layers to be comfortable.

The more people that can carpool the better, hiker parking lots can be pretty small and on a weekend taking a few cars as possible is always ideal.

The shelter were staying at does have a privy but make sure to bring toilet paper for yourself.

If I think of anything else Ill post it. Let me know if you need any more information before we leave!

Excited to hit the trail with you all!

Hi! Looking forward to the trip! Is anyone planning to drive from the Philadelphia area? I would be grateful for a ride, and happy to contribute gas money. Thanks!

Thanks so much!! Kristin, I think I'll get a ride with Andrea since she's also coming from Philly. Andrea, we can coordinate closer to the date, but I can meet you anywhere in the city that's convenient for you. I live in West Philly.
