Radical Reels Tour

  • Sep 5, 2013 · 6:30 PM
  • Varsity Theatre

Every year, the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival presents the wildly popular Radical Reels night – a presentation of the best high-adrenaline films entered into the Banff Mountain Film and Book Festival competition. Inspired by the excitement of the Festival event, the Radical Reels Tour has been traveling with a selection of the hottest action sports films since 2004.

The Radical Reels program in Chapel Hill is hosted by Great Outdoor Provision Co. The festival is made up of short, action-packed climbing, paddling, mountain biking, BASE jumping, skiing, snowboarding, and other adrenaline sport films. We always keep an eye out for films that feature a fresh approach, a new sport, and a radically independent spirit.

Buy your ticket in advance, as seats will sell-out! Tickets available online now for $15 + $1.51 ticket fee = $16.51: (ticket link in comments) or buy in store (in store on sale Fri Aug 16) at GOPC, 1800 E Franklin St in Eastgate Shopping Center.

The films start at 7:00 pm / doors 6:30 pm. Let's meet at 6:30 in the lobby and find seats together. If we miss each other in the lobby, let's gather afterwards and head to Top of the Hill for food/drink/conversation.

My favorite film was Where the Trail Ends (freeride mountain bikers) for its culture, music, and remote landscapes. I read it took three years to make this film. The full-length version is 1 hr 21 mins (available on ITunes). Here is a link to the beautiful soundtrack (Doubou Badia song went well with the scenery and freeriding, etc and First Aid Kit is on the sdtrk): http://extreme-vidz.com/mtb/freeride-ent-where-trail-ends. I also enjoyed La Dura Dura, the climbing films are always inspirational; Spain looks nice! I had a very enjoyable evening evening and nice to chat over a beer afterwards. Sorry, we did not get to see everyone there.

I'd be interested to see the full mountain biking film. For me, the story line seemed awkward, but that's probably due to editing. The cinematography was outstanding! Thanks for putting this together, Shawna.

I truly enjoyed the films. Exilerating and humbling at the same time. Am going to see about viewing films from previous festivals. Also enjoyed the company afterwards. Thank you Shawna!

Would anyone be interested in my ticket. I have an ankle problem that has to be elevated and won't be able to make the show. If you know anyone who might be interested, I would gladly give it to them I hate for it to go unused.

Are we going to have to stick with "assigned seats"?

    August 15, 2013

    • Shawna

Janet, seats are not assigned, it is general seating. It is recommended to buy your ticket in advance because the show sold out last year. Doors 6:30 pm/show 7:00 pm. I will try my best to meet everyone in the lobby before heading into the theater and try to sit together, but if we miss each other beforehand, let's regather afterwards to go to Top of Hill. :-)
