Filmed over 12 years with the same cast, Richard Linklater's Boyhood is a groundbreaking story of growing up as seen through the eyes of a child named Mason (a breakthrough performance by Ellar Coltrane), who literally grows up on a screen before our eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason's parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before. Snapshots of adolescence from road trips and family dinners to birthdays and graduations and all the moments in between become transcendent, set to a soundtrack spanning the years from Coldplay's Yellow to Arcade Fire's Deep Blue. Boyhood is both a nostalgic time capsule of the recent past and an ode to growing up and parenting. It's impossible to watch Mason and his family without thinking about our own journey.

I really liked this film. Linklater's films, especially Boyhood, have an authentic way of captioning (specifically young) people in "real time" with a hint of anti-conformist themes. I thought the casting was perfect. What stands out the most in the film is being in the moment, living in the moment. That's what I think this film is about: presence. What makes this film great is its small but subtle and vital moments in each character but mostly watching Mason's life unfold.

I like this trivia that GinaMaria linked to: The guitar-playing street performer is Ellar Coltrane's real father, Bruce Salmon. He is a musician based in Austin, TX, where his cameo scene is set.

what a terrific movie! a criticism i will mention is that I think Linklater did the movie a disservice by casting his daughter. her growing up was more interesting to me at the beginning of the story, as she was developing quicker. He didn't follow that story though. perhaps because he had already decided the story line was about the boy, or perhaps he was too close to the subject (the girl) to see the fascinating development.

but all in all, a terrific movie.

Very interesting film that brought back a lot of memories of growing up in Texas and going to college in Austin. I did a little research and discovered the college at the end is Sul Ross University, so the entire movie was filmed in Texas. Here's some more fun trivia about the movie:

Really loved this movie! A coming of age documentary would be the best way I can describe it. I'm so glad I got to go this time!

I couldn't make this film & dinner with my other meetup either because of how looong it is. We should set up meeting for dinner or drinks after we've seen this. What cool & unique movie.

I may or may not make it tomorrow, my air conditioner decided to quit on me and I may have to come home after work to have it worked on. If you go to the Flying Burrito and do not see me, carry on without me, I know you can do it.

I just realized how long this film is, and the timing won't work for me. Shawna, we'll compare notes later.
