Friday Night Sabino Stroll

  • Yesterday · 7:00 PM
  • Sabino Canyon Recreation Area

Come join us for our weekly hike and socializing afterward at Risky Business! This is a great hike for new members. We normally walk up the tram road and enjoy the evening views of the canyon. Most folks turn around after 2 miles, but some hardy folks go the entire 7.4 miles to the end of the tram road and back. Everyone walks at a different pace, and so normally we break up into smaller groups as we are walking.  When we get to the 2 mile rock we usually regroup before returning to the visitor center. The group that leaves at 7pm walks a little faster than 2 miles per hour. The group that leaves at 6 walks even faster, nearly 4 miles per hour. Please consider these speeds and your abilities when deciding to join us. If you cannot keep up, be prepared to hike by yourself.

We are hiking in the dark, so please make sure you have a good flashlight. The rattlesnakes are out.

We'll meet at the ramada (covered patio) in front of the Sabino Canyon Visitor's Center at 7 PM, do a quick round of introductions and start hiking shortly thereafter.

Those wishing to walk the entire road should start with the 6:00 PM group if you intend to join the later starters at Risky Business (Kolb/Sunrise).   Please indicate on your RSVP if you will be joining the 6:00PM group.

Stroll at your own risk. Be prepared for possible rain.

If no host is present at the appointed time (+5 Mins), begin the stroll anyway.

See you there!

I had a nice time, it was nice meeting new people I will definitely be coming back. I am originally from PA, relocated to Tucson 4.5 years ago but haven't met to many people as I concentrated on getting my feet on the ground and working to get my name in Art out there.

It was nice to see many people at the 6 pm and 7 pm hikes, and I enjoyed hiking the full length this time. Nice to see everyone.

Only 5? There used to be much more that would go at that time...

Last Friday was fairly cold. Any drastic change in weather, or chance of rain, seems to reduce the number of people who show.

I was checking out new hiking areas, so I hike down by the Dam and the trail along the river going on the south side ... I even took some pictures adult ringtail, and some ducks playing in the water ...

How many people from the 6pm plan on turning back after 2 miles?

I am a Stroke and Turn Judge for USA/Arizona Swimming. Most of the Meets are held on Saturday and Sunday, and occasionally Fridays too. I find that walking the night before a Swim Meet is NOT good for me.
So, I will be doing the Tuesday evening Walk for a while.
I see you at the beginning and because I am such a slow walker, I never see you again until the next hike.
Maybe some day I will catch up to someone, but for now, I will walk with my friends.

I'm going to be doing a 4 mile hike at Sabino Canyon around 4pm so I won't be on either the 5 or 6 a clock hikes and won't be at Risky Business either, as I have an early Motorcycle Toy Run tomorrow to pass out toys to all the good little boys and girls ...

I don't go to Risky Business either, but it is because most of my friends are in AA and I don't want to do anything that would jeopardize them. I don't need to be drinking either as I am on medication.

Can anyone tell me the average speed the 6 pm group paces at please?

    • Jonah

Thanks Chel, I saw the paces listed but, was hoping for a more specific speed. I average about 3.5 MPH and was thinking of joining the 6 pm group. I am glad people will break into smaller groups.

More like about 3 mi/hr for the 7 pm group (get to 2 mi mark around 6:40) & slightly faster for the 6 pm group (c²).
