Ventana Canyon: Maiden Pools

Difficulty:  Intermediate.  We will go at a somewhat quick pace, so this is NOT a beginner hike.

Total time:  Plan on it taking 3 hours roundtrip.

Water:  Bring at least 2 liters

Equipment needed:  Flashlight, hiking pole (recommended)

Distance:  4.6 miles roundtrip

It’s time for a trip up to Maiden Pools.  This is a very pretty hike where we go up the creek trail and we work our way up the canyon walls.  The hike stays flat for the first half, but then it sharply gains elevation, with a final steep ¾ of a mile up the switchbacks.  I will stop periodically to make sure that the group is still together.  When we get to the top, we will rest for 5-10 minutes, then go back down.

You must bring a working flashlight on this hike, as it will be very dark and slippery.  Make sure it works before you show up.  Also, this hike tends to be very slippery due to the creek that we will frequently cross, so I strongly encourage bringing a hiking pole (or 2).

Also, this time of year, it tends to get pretty chilly at night, so dress prepared.  I recommend dressing in layers, as you will heat up as you pick up the pace.

Last week I hiked up to Finger Rock via the McKee trailhead by myself. Would this hike be harder or easier than that?

I'm guessing this is easier. Never done it from the McKee trail, but this only has one particularly difficult point.

No, I am still a BEGINNER. I am walking in Sabino on Tuesdays and haven't even been able to get to the first of the Trams stops. I do go further each time I walk, that first hills backside is wonderful going down, but not so wonderful climbing back up, I am using a Walker to keep me from falling and balanced. Last Tuesday, I had gone quite a way further than the last time, and I got to that HILL! One girl fell down on it. I kept going, all the way saying to myself,"that 99 yr old woman climbed Mt Everest, I can certainly climb this little ant hill" and I repeated it over and over and over again until I managed to get back to the top. Then It was clear sailing all the way to the parking lot.
Hope you have a lot of FUN!
