Does LD_PRELOAD on Linux work with fully-static executables?

Linux experts, I need your advice! I am a newbie and I have a shared library that overrides several libc calls.
Is that a fair statement that unless my application links with libc dynamically, I'm not going to be able to LD_PRELOAD such library?
Thank  you!
Gene
