Our sexual attitudes about loyalty has been influenced by our Puritan influences. Zorba the Greek was written by a Greek about a Greek. Most Europeans have liberal attitudes about sex. Rather than Zorba being lonely and Boubalina being lonely, they gave pleasure of various kinds to each other. I don't think that would surprise those in the Mediteranean cultures.
I think the author was more
interested in the attitudes towards life that the two men represented, one Apollian and on Dyonisian. in nature.
