• North Berkeley Senior Center Meditative Tea Tasting Class

    North Berkeley Senior Center

This class will be held in Classroom 1. Interested in taking this class? Register at North Berkeley Senior Center! Or drop-in! Universal Chan is a non-profit organization holding the lineage of the Zen tradition of Chinese Buddhism. We are dedicated to spreading the wisdom of Zen to enhance our life. Through our deep and wide connection with mainland China and Taiwan, we have access to many varieties of premium tea which enable us to seamlessly combine the value of tea and wisdom of Chan in our teaching. It turns out that it is an effective teaching approach for people with different backgrounds. The class will start with guided meditation, followed by tasting different varieties of premium tea, including some introduction of basic tea knowledge. Through guided meditation, even beginners can have some experience of the calming down of body and mind, and improvement of awareness with more sensitivity to the aroma and taste of the tea, which enables us to better enjoy this healthy drink and the peaceful present moment. At the same time, through training to drink tea in a meditative state, our mind will gradually be softened, allowing us to better appreciate the beauty of tea. Such practices will also help us to have a glimpse of how our mind works so as to better understand the principle of meditation practice. With the deepening of the practice, the principles and method can be easily expanded to our daily activities to further enhance our life so that we can all be more happy, free, and at ease in any situation.

Universal Chan About Universal Chan: Universal Chan is an international Religious non profit organization derived from Chinese Chan* Sudden Approach Tradition , founded by the Chan Monk Da Xing. It operates mainly in Asia,Europe and USA, but we are open to be active in other country as well . Compared to China or other Asian countries where Buddhism is a prevalent religion, USA has only been exposed to Buddhism for less than a century. Many active Buddhist schools across USA are of Hinayana, Vajrayana, Mahayana, Chan, Japanese Zen, and doctrinal studies. All these traditions come from different countries and consequently reflect cultural influences and inflections specific to their place of origin. Although Chinese Chan Tradition is present, the subteaching of Chinese Chan Sudden Approach Tradition is not present. It is a great pity that the vast majority of westerners has not been exposed to Chinese Chan, and even fewer people are able to use Chan Buddhism to improve their lives. This presents a great opportunity to provide all westerners with access to Chinese culture in its many aspects, and to Chinese Chan Buddhism. The goal of the organization and of its affiliations is to spread the Chan Sudden Approach Teaching so to deeply benefit those interested in learning Buddhism.
