Finish backpacking the AT in Ga

We will start at Dicks Creek Gap on the AT and hike into Standing Indian Campground to the cars.  This will be about 20 miles on the AT and 5 down to the campgrounds.

This will make the shuttle a little easier and the hiking distances per day doable in the heat.

How can any backpack be anything but wonderful with good weather and good company?"

Nothing could be better than spending three days hiking through a lush green forest in the company of happy fellow hikers. Appreciate the good fire you made for us, Dewey. Thanks Janice for getting us to hike all of the AT in Georgia.

Thanks to all who joined me in the series Backpacking the AT in Georgia. It was a fabulous hike with all kinds of interesting weather, bears, snakes, poison ivy and wonderful views, hard work, lots of up hill and very tired hikers. Could not have asked for better people to hike with. We hiked 83.5 miles in Georgia, 9.3 in North Caroline on the AT plus the 4.1; .5 connector trail for a grand total of 97.4 miles hiked in 4 weekends. Awesome

This was one of the best hikes on we've done on the AT in Georgia. The section we hiked was a very beautiful section, the weather was great, the company was excellent and we had a very good time, as usual. Plus it was really cool that we had one of these AT hikes without and rain at all.

Just got back from backpacking yesterday and my knee is a bit sore. I don't think hiking 19 miles to catch y'all is a good idea. Have fun! Next time!

Looking forward to some s'mores on this trip. Now, how can I get graham crackers to stay unbroken on the trail?? :)

    September 3, 2013

Leave them in the box they came in and they should be. When they're gone burn the box.

or a Tupperware container but then you have weight with nothing in it when finished.

parking: have never left a car overnight at Ingles so not sure, we leave the cars at the K-mart in Easley without probelms and at the wal mart in Seneca where there was a problem once in the 6 years. I would recommend the K-mart in Easley to car pool or if you wish you can drive to the end and leave your vehicle there however it is a trail head. we have never had problems before and do not think we will but it is a chance we all take.

    • janice k.

I do not see the Ingles being a problen either.

just as a reminder also, when we come out on Sunday we are eating before returning to any car pooling area.

Two questions: (1) Is the parking lot at Ingles a suitable place to leave a car for the weekend, or should I meet there, then drive to the trailhead myself or with others? (2) I have a two man tent and would like to either share the tent, splitting poles on the hike, or crash in someone else's tent, helping carry poles or canvas. Any volunteers to cooperate on this?

Janice I guess Curt and I will meet you at Ingles? If we leave my truck at take out thats's a lot of people and gear; I guess we can "make a pile" in the truck bed. Is that the plan.

    • janice k.

we will see you at Ingles along with Marianna

car pooling 0800 at the K-mart in Easley. At this point we need 3 cars, one left at the take out and two to go to the trailhead

Hope to be on the trail Saturday morning by 0830 so we can spend more time on top of Standing Indian and explore on the way there.

as of right now was going to drop Jane's car off at the take out and take the two trucks to the trail head start and then at the end Jane will take the drivers to get the trucks and come back and pick up everyone. we can talk about it when we see the final number of people coming and how we want to do the shuttle. looks like the shuttle is about 35-40 minutes. each truck holes 6 inside of the cab, Jane's car holds 5 so with all vehicles we have room to make choices as needed.

    August 25, 2013

  • janice k.

Jane will be meeting us in Easley also so we have room in the two vehicles for 10.

I would like to go but I would need to meet y'all out there on Saturday. I am sure I could catch up at some point. Do you have a general idea of where you are staying Saturday night? I know this section of trail like the back of my hand.
