Cabrillo Ride

What about having a ride to the Cabrillo National Monument this coming weekend?

It will be a fun, and rather scenic, ride with one doable climb - 350 ft of elevation gain over 2.2 miles.

Entrance to the monument is $3.

On the way back we could stop for fuel and a drink.

I agree, great ride. Thanks Nico for instigating it. I also liked going for a longer ride, while still leaving room for a little beer time and time for socializing. Stone Brewing Liberty Station was a great stop.I hope to see you again soon. If nothing else, I'll be a Tour de Fat for sure.

Excellent ride! Thanks for organizing, Nico! As much as I dig the beer and bikes combo that seems to be the theme of this group, I really enjoyed getting out for a longer group ride this time. I hope we do more of this! Great to see some familiar faces, and glad to meet some new ones!

Let's try something like this. Let's have two groups: one meeting at De Anza Cove and the other at NP Bikes (Gary, can you be the "leader"?). Both groups will meet at 10 and will leave by 1015. We will all meet, including Michael Minder and Stephen White, where the Ocean Beach Bike Path meets Sunset Cliffs Boulevard by 11.15.

This arrangement should suit everyone, I hope.

Nice compromise. I'll join the De Anza group. I'l be on a blue, silver, black Giant road bike with a white helmet.

Nico - i'm happy to "lead" the ride from NP Bikes but my route is usually downtown to the embarcadero. Ride the path along Harbor Drive to Pt. Loma, etc. Are you thinking of taking the OB bike path and heading south out of OB? I guess we can talk about it soon. See you there. Gary J.

Sorry guys. I just got an offer to go scuba diving tomorrow and can't pass it up. A buddy of mine is certifying me free but I just go out when he can fit me in. Have a great time. Maybe I will see some of you on the 6th for Paseo de Todos in TJ?

As I cannot edit this Meetup page, arghh, I am posting a possible change here. Instead of leaving from NP Bikes we could meet at the parking lot by De Anza Cove Park http://goo.gl/zQ2RSt, where there should be plenty of parking if you are thinking of driving.

Plenty of parking in the North Park parking garage that is 1/2 block away from North Park Bikes!

I live in Clairemont, so I'm trying to figure out if I wan to drive up with the bike and ride with you from NP Bikes or leave from home and try to meet you somewhere. Any idea yet on your approximate route so I can scope some meetup opportunities? I love the Cabrillo ride, but haven't done it in a while so it would be nice to do.

Plenty of parking in the North Park parking garage right next to North Park Bikes!

Oh, if you're going from De Anza, I'm in! I live near UTC, so I'll ride Rose Canyon and meet you there. Been trying to ride with this group for a while!

I would like to meet up with the in Point Loma, will you riding past Liberty Station or Spanish Landing ?

De Anza Cove is a good place also.

Hey Nico, you are doing a good job of organizing the Cabrillo ride.I ride with Mike Minder in another bike club.We are looking forward to meeting up with you at Spanish Landing, and riding with the group.Or possibly at De Anza Cove.Do you plan to meet at 10:00 and start riding at 10:30? If we wait at Spanish Landing we will be there at 10:45 or so.

Hi, the Cabrillo ride sounds fun.Can you tell me how many miles the ride is? Will the ride start from North park bikes location? I have heart issues, and ride an electric bicycle,so knowing the ride distance is important.Look forward to joining the group on Sunday.

If we decide to start from North Park Bikes it will be 12.5 miles each way, http://www.mapmyride..... There will be one climb though, which should be doable for anybody that rides regularly. But it is still a climb and the forecast is for a warm sunny Sunday. If you think you can do it you are more than welcome to join, but I would not want to have somebody's life on my conscience.

Sounds like a good time, I'll try to make it. I have a Cabrillo annual pass, so I may be able to get 1 or 2 other cyclists in for free.

Stephen: Depending on where the group ends up going, it will probably end up being around 25-30 miles.

Might I suggest Stone Brewing Co at Liberty Station for an after ride refueling station? I am close to there now and could stop in and ask about reserving a bocce ball court if anyone is down.

My response should be "tentative" rather than "yes". I'm waiting for a poorly planned Big Bear trip to fall through before I fully commit. Careful with those Bali Hai Mai Tai's...they're a doozy.

    August 28, 2013

  • Gary J.

A stop at Fathom on the Shelter Island Pier would be ideal on the way back. There is also Bali Hai for something more exotic like a Mai Tai! I love Shelter Island.
