Summer Saturday Hikes! - Wild Flowers at Cecret Lake (SLC)

This week’s hike will be to Cecret Lake, a small tarn that is set in a glacial depression beneath Sugarloaf Peak and the Devil's Castle cliff face.  Cecret Lake at 9,890’ of above sea level, serves as the headwaters for Little Cottonwood Creek. It is an easy hike through meadows that contain over 120 different species of wildflowers.  We may see moose in lower meadows, with ground squirrels and marmots being common near the lake.

The trail to Cecret Lake is 1.5 miles round trip with 458 feet of elevation gain.  After Cecret Lake, we will continue up to Sugarloaf Pass which will add an 1.75 miles up with an additional elevation gain of approximately 1100’.

Please plan on taking extra time with this hike as we will likely be frequently stopping to take pictures.

We will be repeating this hike in August for a chance to see a different set of wildflowers.

Directions to Meetup: We will meet at the park and ride located at 4323 Little Cottonwood Canyon Road in Sandy, UT 84092 and carpool to the trailhead.  From Salt Lake City, go south on I-15.  Take exit 295 and turn left onto 9000 S and head 7.2 miles west to the park and ride.

Directions to trailhead: From the park and ride go left onto Little Cottonwood Canyon Road for about 10.9 miles to Albion Basin Campground. The trailhead is located on the west side of the campground at trailhead sign.

Dogs: Are not allowed in Little Cottonwood Canyon.

Please be prepared for the hike, the below link is a good resource for beginners to review before hiking.

After the hike: There will be the option of heading down to the Canyon Inn to socialize by the fire. The Canyon Inn is a bar but there is great pizza and everyone is welcome!

The Canyon Inn is located at 3700 Fort Union Blvd. The easiest way to get there is to head west on Little Cottonwood Canyon Road from the parking lot, the road will turn into S  Wasatch Blvd, in 3.9 miles left onto Fort Union Blvd and the Canyon Inn will immediately be on your left.

I just arrived at Catherine Pass and they're not letting anyone up the road. Where is the group at?

Anyone from the Layton area going on this hike that may be interested in car pooling?

Really wanted to go but I'm suffering the after effects of "leg day" at the gym. Definitely going on this hike next month if it's still on the agenda. Look forward to meeting you then!
