Get set for the meteoritic show of the summer! Pronounced “Pur-SEE-ids”……
The Perseids are already active, being visible from around July 17th to August 24th. Summer is nearing its end, but the meteor shower season is just about to get underway.
The Zenithal Hourly Rate, which is the number of meteors you could expect to see during optimal conditions under dark skies, for the Perseids is usually between[masked] meteors. However, during some years it can be over 200.
We will be heading out away from light-polluted suburban skies to Skull Valley, UT to watch the show. We will not be having a bonfire as we will need to preserve our night vision. Be sure to bring a chair, a blanket to keep warm and something to eat. We will spend time socializing and watching the stars. If you bring a headlamp it is preferable that it has a red LED to help preserve night vision.
There is camping available on BLM land across the highway from where we will be. There is no camping at the spring.
Reminder... Fires are prohibited. This is a high fire risk area. There are also NO bathrooms/services. Be prepared. Parking at the spring itself is very limited. There is additional parking on the opposite side of the road. We might be able to arrange a shuttle if parking becomes an issue, cell service is available at the site.
If you do not want to spend the night we can arrange carpools.
1. Take I-80 west from Salt Lake City for approximately 43 miles.
2. Take exit 77 for UT-196 towards Rowley/Dugway.
3. Turn left onto UT-196 S and go approximately 9.6 miles.
